View Full Version : went to an industrial auction today-(Wright tool content)

Took some time off of work today to go to an industrial auction. The place used to make body and vehicle armor for military contracts. They advertised all kinds of tools and equipment- huge milling machines, presses, shears, even a water jet cutter. One thing I noticed was that all of the hand tools in the pics were Wright brand. They also had several large tool chests, also Wright brand.

Well, the auction started at 930am today, but I had to go into the office and get some work done- ended up leaving the office at about 10am, got to the auction at about 11am. To my dismay, almost all of the hand tool were already sold when I arrived. I saw lots of little piles of nice shiny wrenches, ratchets, breaker bars and sockets- all Wright and all sold.

I hung out for a while and bought a couple of small items, then saw 2 more Wright rolling toolboxes in the back of the building that had not been sold!! They were a bit beat up, dents here and there, but they did not look very old. One of them still had the plastic on the drawer handles- mostly.

I waited for them to sell a bunch of large stuff, then they took a break at 1pm to sell the real estate (buildings and land). Finally they got to the 2 Wright boxes- and I bought them both!!

The only thing I can tell you is that one of them has a sticker that says "Made in Canada", so I'm assuming Waterloo?? or Gray???

So, I went from having not much tool storage, to having plenty.........

I just unloaded them into my shop- gotta go grab some pics + I'll post up later.

First rule to auction goers: Get there early!

That sucks you missed the hand tools. When stuff like that happens to me, I always to tell myself that they probably sold for too much.

Oh yes, believe me, I know about getting there early- but work got in the way this time.

The way I look at it, work comes first- otherwise I'd have all the time in the world to go to auctions- but no $$$$ to buy anything!!!!!!!!!1

I use auctionzip.com, don't know if it is everywhere though. Also, google auctions in your state or large city, something should come up

Interesting...

To the best of my knowledge, Rig, Waterloo doesn't manufacture in Canada. Other potential Cdn manufacturers include Rousseau (unlikely) and SPG (fairly likely).

On a side note,Wright tools are mostly industrial/Government use tools.I just sold $83,010.00 of Wright tools Fri. to the US gov't.Wright does not make 14,000 tools like Snap-On but they make/carry 4,000 high quality US made tools.I have said before on the GJ "I am not running down SO(maybe cracking a joke or two),but simply stating that Wright's market is mostly industrial/gov't.

This is the first auction I've been to in a LONGGGG time. I am actually on the auction company's mailing list since I've been to a couple of their auctions over the years.

I check the local newspaper classifieds section under Auctions, but there's rarely anything worth a darn. And it's hard for me to get time off work during the week when I do find something that looks interesting.

There are deals to be found, but you really have to know what you are looking at and don't get caught up in a bidding frenzy- it's too easy for this to happen and then you end up paying way to much for something, or you buy something that's broken or missing pieces.

Don't worry, TR- I think Wright tools are top notch. I bought a couple of Wright metric flare nut wrenches and some wobble extensions years ago from a place called Imparts- I think they were based in St Louis. I still have them and use them on a regular basis.

EDIT:

just poked around the wright tools site, and it looks like the top box is WT861

And the bottom is WT854R on this page:

(or at least those are the closest I could find in their current catalog)

Sizes are:

Top- 40.5 x 20.5 x 18
Bottom- 41.5 x 36.25 x 18.75 (box only, not including caster wheels)

Any idea what they retail for new?

and what is the general consensus about them, in terms of quality?

I spent a little more than $700 for everything.

I'm thinking about selling one set of boxes to help offset my expenditure, but I've got to give them a thorough cleaning and see if I can bang out a couple of dents first.

The pullers are made for pulling hubs on the old style tapered axles. Bolt the three arms to the wheel studs and spin it down they are made to be beat with a hammer the shock helps loosen it. The threaded part should have a little play in it, so when it is tight you can beat it straight in and shock the hub loose as well. I have an extra pair of arms that will probably fit if you're interested.

The list prices: WT861-$1,807.38, WT854R $2,229.60

You got a Great deal!!!!EVEN USED!!!!!!!!

On a second side note,I did not say that [B]ALL gov't bases use Wright,I said MOST OF WRIGHT'S SALES ARE TO industries/gov't.

I don't have to defend a US made tool company that has been producing high quality tools since 1927.Wright tools are geared more towards these customers so average garage tech doesn't see them.:)

How can boxes that can be purchased for $507.21 and $713.39 under the "real" brand name warrant list prices of $1807.38 and $2229.60 respectively after the application of a Wright Tools logo?

The same as ANY private label tool from any company;Wright,Snap-On's blue point, etc.

List is not what the majority of tools or anything else is sold for.

Think of all the tools Wright has(does) make for other tool companies, those companies mark those same Wright tools up by the same margins.

The SO guys have said on here before "you are buying everything that goes with that price:warranty,service,quality,etc..."That is why people spend more money on certain brands, even if they are JUST relabeled.

Merk can clear up this point I'm sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:thumb up:

I don't understand that, either. But I'm not certain that's the principal objection to your posts.

I'd guess it's the incessant advertising for the brand which you distribute.

We get it; Wright makes fine tools and you offer a discount to GJ members. That's great, but you should probably leave it at that or have them post that info as a "sticky".

Imagine how obnoxious it would be here if a distributor for every other brand showed up spamming their wares! It's bad enough with all the brand-proselytes currently clogging up the board with their rubbish "contributions"...

Thanks for the clafication on that.I Talked to the moderator about the discount and he said leave it and I could use it in my signature. Also thanks for the discount.

My main point is that I am being open to help members find or buy Wright tools because I was asked by members to help.

You might want to send Mike Wren this same post! The members I have sold Wright tools to have not posted on here to promote with "rubbish contributions".I am not trying to sell and build up a Wright tool base here(at least Wren is honest about doing so)More power to him.

I sell to the US gov't and sub's.So I am sorry if anyone thinks I am promoting Wright tools all the time.I have a catalog that has over 235,000 items,Wright just happens to be MY favorite.

Sorry, I have to stick up for TR here. Everyone that post about how great (insert brand) tools are is doing no more than what he is doing. Since his introduction, I haven't seen him once say "BUY TOOLS FROM ME".

You guys need to remember SO wasn't always the best. (and may still no be) Bonney for example, made MANY tools for the military and aviation industry. Plomb was THE TOOL to have in the pre-Proto days. VlChek was the auto industries go to company back in the day.

Wright makes great tools. I don't sell them. Is that advertising? Take a look at the mining and oil industries. They almost exclusively use Wright brand tools in the harshest environments known to man. Are there other brands in those environments too? Sure there are! That doesn't diminish the fact that Wright makes very good, top quality tools.

And lastly, every other brand IS SPAMMED HERE. EVERY ONE. Like them or dislike them this is one big ad for why you should buy XXXXXXXXXXXX's tools. Good lord, I bet you couldn't count the number of time "Snap On" has been typed on this board! I'd say it would be had to count the number of times members here had PUSHED Snap On as THE TOOLS to buy.

End of Rant. Sorry to HJK this thread.

First off, thanks T56 for starting a separate thread, it was taking over this one.

Secondly, I don't think anyone is disputing the fact that Wright makes excellent quality tools. Merk puts out the bait again and again and TR swallows the hook. :bounce: I don't really mind the mini-infomercials in each of TR's posts, but if he would tone it down a bit I think he'd be taken more seriously. Right now alot of people seem to take his posts with a grain of salt, thinking that even when he's trying to be helpful, it's really just a clever way to promote his business.

There are alot of companies that make excellent quality tools, but I don't think any one company makes EVERY TOOL better than any other company. Reminds me of car guys who say "Ford sucks" or "Chevy sucks" or whatever- when we all know that all car companies make good and bad cars.

No worries.

But, I forgot to mention a couple of other details to you guys about this auction.

I was loading the boxes into my 40 foot stacker, and I didn't want to damage one of my 427 Shelby Cobras that I just happened to have in there- so I asked this guy to help me. Well, instead of helping he started punching me, and in my efforts to protect my Cobras, I was unable to defend myself. So, I finally got him off of me and hit my the panic button I wear around my neck (you know- the "I'veFallenandIcan'tgetup" model 4523). The 2 security guys showed up within minutes and helped me into the cab of my Rolls-Royce that I had custom built to haul the stacker trailer. I pulled out my 24k gold plated walking stick that I had conveniently stored in the umbrella holder of the Rolls, to help me get around.

Seems that I have some sort of nerve damage to my sphincter, though that could be from the party I had at my place last weekend- not sure. I also have a bruised ego and I think I may have lost my sense of humor.

Oh, and I'm going to miss out on a couple of weeks of work- so I'll need to be compensated for that. I figure I'll miss out on ~$24k a week since I can't perform my duties as the main elephant pregnancy checker at the local animal shelter.
