I just realize that the 7-pc sets are good choices if you are also buying the corresponding SAE sets. The 7-pc sets usually come with 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18 mm. Compared to 10-pc 10-19mm sets, 11, 16, 19 mm are missing. A simple conversion shows that these sizes can be filled up from your SAE set. 11mm = 7/16 inch (error=0.11mm), 16mm = 5/8 inch (error = 0.12mm), and 19mm = 3/4 inch (error=0.05mm). Actually, you can also get the 8mm from SAE. It is equivalent to 5/16 inch (error = 0.06mm). I do not think you can tell the difference of 0.1mm.

So the 7-pc sets are almost the same as 10-pc sets.

You can get away with using Metric or SAE sizes that match up most of the time but you have to remember that not all tools themselves are exactly perfectly sized so that throws another variable in to the mix. Its best to just use the correct size for the fastener if at all possible plus who doesn't like having more tools?

My dad was very nearly stranded going by the you can use a 5/8" in a pinch for a 16mm. His steering box to frame bolts were loose and the 5/8" was just to tight to use, thankfully he found a 16mm wrench deep in his tools.

I always use a 3/4" socket for lug nuts because it seems to fit better than the 19mm's though.

I can't remember if I have ever used a 7/16" in place of an 11mm but I will bet it works less than 1/2 the time.

I routinely grab a 7/16" wrench and an 11mm wrench when doing 1/4" bots and nuts.Happens everyday where I work. There's not enough difference to be noticeable in my experience.I lost my 1/4"dr 7/16 deep socket a few months ago and haven't gotten around to replacing it yet,I just grab my 11mm socket.haven't found anywhere yet that it gave me problems.
