SAfe and secure Tool bench/storage

I am sad to say someone broke into my garage and took all my hand and power tools. Good news is that I am insured and they will return half of the money needed to replace everything I had. Hand tools being the hardest to replace as most of us know we never remember that we had that special tool until we need it again. But my post is to see if there is a better work bench/storage design I can use to build into the garage. I have already installed a high end video and alarm system. Any pics of an awesome bench would be great......Thanks guys. and girls if there are any on here.

My sympathies.

I think it was a similar post on here a while back that got me to thinking about what to do if that time came...and it's happened in the past. I had been taking pictures of my things for years but there was no order to what I was doing. There was also no way for someone else to figure out what was what or what it was worth. I thought this was not too smart so I went looking for a solution.

I wound up with this great little program called "Everything I Own". I am still filling in the blanks every month. An added bonus to this is if anything happens to me the wife knows where to look to understand what something is and what it might be worth.

PS: My insurance agent thought it was a great idea instead of scribbled paper after the fact. I send him a printout every year with updates and deletions.

I hate to hear that but I have found that thieves usually do their work when you are not around. If you have video...now you get to watch them rob you, maybe even I. D. them, but your shite is still gone! If you have an alarm...that just annoys the neighbors..rarely does anyone respond. Locks just keep honest men honest. I still believe in the following set-up......

my barn has a sliding door on it (currently in process of switching to a normal garage door).. It was "securely" latched from the inside. The day my concrete contractor came to start the job, I run out to the barn to open the barn door from the inside so he can start his work - by the time I get in there, the door is already open.... What happened? He just slipped a pen inside the door and flipped open all the latches. For the past 3 years that I've lived there, any thief could have done the same. Whew! Dodged a bullet there!

Newly renovated barn has locks everywhere :)

A couple Knack job boxes will do the trick. Weight them down with bricks or solid concrete blocks so they're in the 1200 lb range. Then, bolt them to the floor and weld the nuts. No more theft problem.

If you have a torch or grinder, secure those items as well.

Great thread, all should read and think about security, no matter where you are!

I have got a cheap service door with 2 plexiglass windows anyone could push in or kick in the door. I am definately changing it.

Also great idea doing an inventory on tools for insurance.

A good set of locks and a good alarm system should do you ok.

You are going to need more than a bench to secure tools.

Those Knaakk boxes will do the job if bolted down. It is just about immpossible to cut the locks off of those.

packerbill, Not knowing where you reside. A alarm might be your best bet, if the neighbors will hear it and Police can make it to your abode in a reasonable amount of time.

Securing all your tools after every job is a PITA.
