I have opportunity to buy a SNAP ON KRL1022 Box (mint used) with Stainless Top for $3K
http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=storage&item_ID=79570&group_ID=17806&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog
This box has 13 Drawers and is 45" High versus the 11 Drawer KRL7022 with 11 drawers.
Color is Electric Orange which I like being a Camaro car guy and all. I understand Black and Blue dominate most of the new S.O. and MAC boxes.
I'm not buying the box to flip it, buying to use in my private shop/garage
however will this color be a liability someday or should I just enjoy using/owning it. I ALWAYS over analize everything!!!!!!
I dont need to lock up all my big "stuff" as this in my secure garage. I just wanted to replace old outdated non roller 26" bottom/top combo
I was very close to pulling the trigger on $1600 Chinese EXTREME Top/Bottom Combo, but now found this. $1400 difference could buy a lot of new TOPTUL's to go into EXTREME Combo........
Thanks for your thoughts...........

i would say its up to you if you want to spend the money on it or not. if you want it then go for it. or just buy the cheaper box and spend the money you saved on some quality tools.

offer the seller $2300 if he doesn't take it go to $2500 if still no dice.Walk and wait for a cheaper chest, and get the Toptul tools.
But then again if moneys not a problem pick it up,that box will outlive you.

Yep that decision is all yours, obviously you know the Snap-on will be of better quality and will have much better resale but only you can decide if you want or need it over the Extreme box.

This box is extremely nice condition, WITH Stainless Top
Box retails for over $7K (crazy), seller started at $4K and I offered him $3K.
Now someone here wants me to completely piss seller off, and offer him $2300 or ?
Anyway, we shall see.................
Just hope I can be happy with drawer configuration, as I dont plan on heading sides and hutches and all that...........

No, you never stated the situation. If they have already dropped a 1g, and it was your offer, then no, you shouldn't offer less. However, I assumed the seller was asking $3k, therefore it would be natural to offer less. Don't get pissed at another member when they are trying to help and you didn't fully explain the situation. That being said, I would get the Extreme combo and spend the rest on tools.

The KRL1022 is a great toolbox. $3000 is a very good price for the toolbox with stainless top if it is in real good condition. I am trying to decide whether to buy an orange one myself for $2400 without the stainless top.

3k does not seem unreasonable if the box is near mint. If you like the color and plan to keep it I don't see a problem.

That is a sweet box at a decent price. You'll never regret spending the money. The only thing you didn't state was how old it is. If it's less than 4 years old or so, it's a good deal.

If the color is your only hangup then I would say go ahead and get the thing. It is a great box, and I think the color is kind of cool. Hey atleast it isn't pink or something.

The electric orange has a nice color hue and it's not too harsh; it's kind of mellow and subdued actually. I don't think it'll cause you any problems with resale value later on.

If you want a better deal you can sell me the stainless top.

Thanks to all the responses.........
I plan on buying it subject to a final inspection. Box is in a small storage locker and I couldnt see all sides. Stainless drawer pulls still had white protective film on them.
Another issue will be getting it home. I'm fearful of damaging the box if I tried to get it into my DODGE Ram P.U.....................so will take my enclosed car trailer with ramp back door.
I'm not a professional mechanic as I previously said. Like many people I have a hodge podge of tools including older Snap-On rachets, Snap on combo wrenches, & goes down in quality from there.
I started out wanting a 72" x 18 Drawer EXTREME, but after measuring, concluded I just dont have room in my P.O.S. 2 car garage. I was going back and forth with other misc EXTREME boxes and pretty much decided to buy the 56" Bottom/Top Combo. Sure wish I could have laid my hands on it, ya know just to expereince it first hand. Ive read good things about the EXTREME boxes and one member here even sent me a good set of pictures of his 56" set-up.
I really dont need the top area of the KRL1022, as I have a 16' long steel work bench along the back wall of my shop. Knowing my bad habits, the stainless top will often be cluttered with tools, as I dont need to lock my stuff up every time I leave the garage.
I tend to be cheap and frugal, even though I can afford any of these boxes and tools.
I'm thinking I need to put together a TOPTUL order after I get the new box and update my rachets, gear wrenches and whatever else you guys can suggest as must haves.
I'm going to be assembling my 70 Z-28 project which is 100% apart....
best regards to all of you, hope your fathers day goes well with your family.

Just be carful when you unload it from the trailer. Either get a couple of buddies to hold it back while coming down the ramp. Or use a cum along to let it down the ramp.Or a winch if the trailer is out fitted with one.
Once that box gets rolling you will never stop it.

One trick I use to load and unload boxes like this (and larger) is a floor jack under the hitch. Lifting the front of the trailer makes it MUCH easier to get a box in, and it will practically unload itself. By tipping the trailer you get a much shallower slope on the ramp, so two people can easily unload a KRL without winching it down. When I tip the trailer, I leave it connected, so it's only going up 12-18".

That box is very tempting to buy, but if it was me I'd wait til a 3 bay box like that came up for sale. I don't know how many tools you own but I'd fill that one up no problem.

Charlie, I dont have room for longer three bay box.
My only option (at this small shop) is to go UP, and the KRL1022 with 13 Drawers is already 45" High...............so dont know if top box is a reality???????
Guess that's why some buy the 11 Drawer KRL7022 which is 39".
I'll probably fill this box up, but not sure how I'll organize those top two WIDE drawers, as I just dont have quantity of sockets and rachets, that most of you guys do !!!!!!!!!
Thanks,
Canadian Charlie

If thats your option then get it, I always loved the "Electric Orange" boxes
If I had the money (alot of it) I'd get a van, drive up to the UK and buy a 3 bay one.

Put all of your most commonly used tools in those top drawers. Even if it's a mixed bag, you can fit most of your go to tools in that drawer.

My top two drawers on my KRL7022. The top drawer has most of my pneumatic tools and the second drawer has most of my metric wrenches. The top 2 drawers on the KRL1022 should be the same as the drawers on my KRL7022.

I'm curios about the multiple air ratchets; do you work in situations where you need more then one; or possibly repetitive tasks with different socket sizes?

I can't seem to pass up a good deal and I got many of the ratchets for practically nothing since they weren't working properly. I picked them up really cheap and spent $10 or $20 for parts to make them work like new. It is also helpful to have duplicates of tools to make many jobs go faster and easier. I guess I'm just a sucker for a good deal. The 3 small ratchets are Snapon FAR25 1/4" and are great for getting into really tight spaces to speed removal or installation of small fasteners. I used all 3 when I was replacing my water pump and timing belt recently. I had an 8mm on one a 10mm on another and a 12mm on the third. I also have a very compact 3/8" MAC ratchet that was given to me about 20 years ago and still works very well. The other 2 ratchets are K&E 1/2" and 3/8" impacting ratchets that have 100 fl. lbs. of torque. I use them a lot for initial tightening in restricted spaces. They are much bulkier and heavier than the other small ratchets however.

Here are pictures of the rest of the box. I am still rearranging stuff from my other boxes so I'm not sure it will stay this way for long.

11AM Sunday/Fathers Day.........I'm meeting the KRL1022 seller again this afternoon for a final inspection 360degree/all drawers/pictures yada yada...........Wont pick the box up today but either leave deposit or NOT!!!!!
Sure appreciate all the comments pro and con..............
I understand that many/most of this board are either pro mechanics or obsessed with collecting fine tools. I am not, however will cherish, respect and love a new quality box.
I am obsessed with buying 70' Camaro parts and old Camaro's in general. Leaving this Wednesday night for Carlisle,PA for the 2009 Camaros at Carlisle annual huge show.
I also recently spent good money buying used 2003 Dodge RAM 3500 Cummins and 20'
Pace American Shadow GT car trailer.
We all have our $$$ vices, mine just isnt tools.
I'll be too embarrassed to ever show open drawer pics of my KRL1022, because of my hodge podge of tools. I dont have a deserving youngster to "give away" my old stuff too and start over from scratch.
I will be ordering a few new TOPTUL items from Mike Wren after I come to a conclusion on what I can really need/use versus what I dont need.
Hope to SEE more pics here of eithe KRL 1022's or the shorter KRL 7022.
Thanks so much,
Chuck

Well I now have the tool box in my garage.
I'm back home now, but was gone for 5 days while at Carlisle,PA attending and judging the Camaros at Carlisle annual show.
In reading the SNAP ON papers that came with the KRL1022 its says that warranty does NOT transfer to a 2nd owner
The top drawer PLASTIC piece on the "Lock and Roll" system seems to be a little worn or something. Drawer lock doesnt easily catch when closed.
Any suggestions ???

Sweet talk a dealer. You don't need to mention you're not the original owner.
I've got slides on my box replaced under warranty, i told my dealer it came 2nd (or 3rd?) hand off eBay.

Congrats. We need pics of course.
How about this idea? Give it a vintage Z28 look.
Put a couple of one ft wide white stripes down the front of the box to go with the 'Hugger" orange color. Find one of those outfits that does car wraps, so you could make it completly reversable should you decide you don't like it, or if you decide to sell it at some later date.
