Those are made by Kastar. http://www.aeincorporated.com/Kastar/?category=7&page=show_item_detail&id=60&qs=cGFnZT1zdG9yZSZjYXRlZ29yeT03JnBhZ2VfbnVtPTImbnV tX2l0ZW1zX3RvX2Rpc3BsYXk9MTA=
Many of the Truck brands sell the same set for quite a bit more.

What is "free 99"? Some type of dealer promo thing?

I'm not trying to stir up trouble, I really don't know...why would I want a thread restoring set if I have dies and taps?

Just a way to say free. Was no longer needed at work along with a bunch of other stuff.

If you have a set of bottom tap... no reason really. I have never used the kit I have other than for the files.

$100 off the SO truck, and JUNK.
I hate rethreads. They snap so easy its not even funny.

The reason I bought the "kit" was that I do custom mock up of a tool kit for some of my customers. My main supplier for files and the like didn't have a 0.75-3.00 thread file so ,because it is a mock up to be used in an evaluation..it was easier to buy it from Sears.
I could have ordered one and got it in a few days but I needed it last week..

for most aplications you can get away with using a tap or die to clean damaged threads, but really the thread restorer can be a better choice for some applications. if you dink or dent the threads and run a die over it then you remove the offending material. this can reduce the thread contact area and by that reduce the strenth of the union of the nut/bolt
for non critical applications its no big, for critical applications you need the thread restorer

That's the thing about this site... After a few years of being here, you notice things come in cycles... :bounce:  (I'm not bashing the post, it is valid and has been a while since it was discussed).... It’s just that I thought everyone here knew they were made by KASTAR (not trying to be arrogant). I sometimes forget that we get new members all the time. It is hard for me to believe the following thread is 3 years old. I remember the day it was posted... :)

Bolster, There is a difference between Taps and dies, and thread restorers. Too long for me to explain scientifically, so I will just put in the link...

BWP,
I understand what your saying,I was more shock than anything about the kit being made here.I also thought it was a commentary on Sears changing the amount of tools they have in the stores.
Plus I don't spend a lot of time finding out "who" makes every tool for whom....I have enough of a time keeping up with my suppliers...trying to recommend tools to customers etc...
And I thought I could get Merk to say something!!!!!:bounce:
By the way thanks again for the Wright logo!

I think the wealth of knowledge we have here is what makes this board so great... I didn't know KASTAR made them, let alone made them in the US until I found this board..
Unfortunately, we have lost many original members for whatever reason.
That's why when I see threads like this, I usually can remember when they were posted (sometimes by whom).. and like to provide a member a quick answer... A few days ago, a member asked about an unknown screwdriver... One look at it and I knew it was an Octo grip (I have one, but do not have a photo) but I remember that Wilbilt had posted a few.... Made it an easy question to answer for the OP.
I miss some of the originals on this board... Who knows if they ever will come back...
I feel kinda like a Greybeard on this site (my 5 year anniversary will in 8 months)...
Hell, I can remember when Merkava originally started posting.... He posted over 100 times in 3 days... "I thought, this guy is gonna burn out....." I guess I was wrong about that one.
Some people say this site isn't what it used to be..... Yes, they are correct.. It was a bit more personal some years ago, but for about the first year or so, the classifieds were hardly used, there were always popcorn munches about Craftsman v Snap on and it was still in its infancy as a repository of great information... I think the board now is better than it has ever been. - JMHO
P.S. No prob on the Avatar... Glad to help.. BTW I think it is a Great logo... Very distinctive, with a solid, bold statement.

BWP,
I know what you mean about the old guys! When I was on here over a year ago and had lurked way before that.......the board kinda had a different vibe!
That is one of the reasons I took down my discount and so called "sales" pitch.......I was getting crap for offering a discount and drumming up sales.
Case in point ,I post something about Wright ,folks say "well Toptul is cheaper ,Mike a great guy " I never once said a thing about either one.Sure I made a (un)funny joke about tool trucks and got bitched at!Now Merk's running down SO and the tool trucks........lot more fun to read, learn and enjoy the GJ......:lol_hitti

There is always change. I get called away for our busy seasons and do not see the computer except for work for a couple months. Things always change.
It takes some time to learn value for the long life tools have. I just helped a friend with painting a car. After he blew it with a HF gun, at least by my standards, he got to sand it down and find out why I have Sharpe, Graco, and CAT guns. The CAT 1.3 laid the clear down, just like glass. The Sharpe equally well on the primer and the Graco on the base. The only defect was my fault where I set my ladder just a little to far to the front and had reach to far to cover one spot on the base coat. Had to sand a little there. His only words when done was "Damm you really do get what you pay for".

Uncle Buck just started a thread about Sears switching over to China for their source of Craftsman Taps & Dies; I wonder how long it's gonna' be now before they try to find a Chinese source to make thread chasers for them.
