View Full Version : Makita 3/8 impact not holding sockets

Ive had my Makita 3/8" impact for 8 days, and Ive been using it for 6. I use it alot, to say the least, because its incredibly convenient, but yesterday, it started having problems holding sockets, and today, it flat out stopped holding sockets. :(

I tried all of my 3/8 impact sockets on it, and none of them held. Then I took those same sockets and tried them on the same impact belonging to another tech, and they all held just fine.

Ive been incredibly happy with my brand new Makita stuff until today.

Anyone else with Makita stuff have this problem? Is there anything I can do?

Mac has a special plier for this. It both removes and installs/resizes retaining rings for 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 guns. It costs 19.99. Not saying you should get this, just an FYI.

I always felt that ring was a P.O.S

I put a 1" extension on and left it for the life of my last Makita

The ring is still there, just not holding. Im 90% sure itll be taken care of by the warranty, so Im not worried about getting it fixed, Im just upset. Ive seen rings wear out, and fall off, but not after a week of use!

I just want to be able to use my 3/8 cordless without it being a PITA!

I remember this happenend on my first impact wrench. It bought it from CT years ago. The ring fell off the second day I had it

Now I have the MG31 for almost a year and the 725 for 6 months and the rings are still good. I guess it's just a quality issue.

Im not really interested in a different tool. I just want it to work. Like I said, Ive been extremely happy with my Makita stuff up to this. As long as this issue gets resolved, I dont see any reason I wont still be happy. As Ive said before, lots of other people in my shop use the same Makita and im the only one thats really had an issue.

Oh nice.. I'm thinking of getting the 14.4 kit myself.

That ring pliers sounds like a good idea.. that way you can adjust the ring to your liking. I have a butterfly impact that the ring makes it tough to push on some sockets. I wonder if the pliers can adjust it..

Id rather have tough to push on then falling off :lol_hitti

I agree, the pliers sounds like it would fix my issue, but i just bought then thing a week ago! Ive never found myself mad that I have to wait for a tool truck to warranty something, but I use that thing like crazy. Its making me nuts.

Something just popped into my head that I wanted to share... Craftsman's new socket design... where there is a "double" detent... makes difficult to install and even harder to remove a socket when using it on a retaining ring anvil. I think it might mess up retaining rings.

for the money the snap on stuff costs, and for what it puts out, it better last a lifetime. I don't understand the whole buying snap on impact gun trend with the IR stuff being cheaper, better made, and making more power and lasting longer

Actually, Snap-On makes more power. I don't work on an assembly line so the 1/2 pound difference means nothing to me, same goes for the sound. I like the SO appearance over the IR. I think its a $50 difference in price over here aswell.

This is why I bought Snap-On over IR. Not because it's a trend :headscrat Although, the IR made MT2858 Matco air ratchet blows the SO FAR7200 out of the water anyday. I own one :D

so snap on has a gun that will take out the 2135TI or Nitrocat? The snap on guy told me himself that the mac rebranded AW280 nitrocat will out power any snap on 1/2" gun.

Check out the MG725 from Snap-On.

Edit: That Snap-On guy needs to do a little research. The AW280Q is a 3/8" impact making 400lbs/ft of torque. How would that take on the MG725's 810lbs/ft of max reverse torque?

The big cordless dewalt 18 volt 1/2 impact driver is nearly impossible to get sockets on and off of. I don't know I am stupid or something but it is so difficult I avoid using the tool. Anyone else have this tool and notice that? (Sorry to hijack!)

Maybe he was just talking about 3/8 vs 3/8 not 1/2

He said it beats any 1/2" from so. If he meant 3/8 then he is right but it's alot more expensive than the mg31 or 325.

A kit that looks like it is made by the same manufacture is available from an Amazon supplier for a few bucks less:

Is there an another way to install hog rings besides getting that special tool ? I have a ring I need to install on a 3/8" drive impact.

yeah, the lock pin is a bitch, go to harbor freight, buy the 9 dollar extensions set, put the 1" long 1/2" drive extension on it, and leave it like that, then just use that to swap sockets on/off of, that pin is just plain gay. Dewalt is so stupid for doing that, man it really pissed me off using it the other day at the junkyard, such a pita when your in a hurry.

i thought it was 280? whichever the nitrocat is named from mac, one of the guys in the shop I was at had one, and they all agreed it'd out do the snap on gun. just telling you what he said, never used the snap on mg725 nor do I plan to waste my money on a gun with no muffler, more expensive to buy, and more expensive to rebuild

use a socket that just fits the tip part. tap it on. just watch if it flies off, very hard to find once that happens.

Sorry, been gone for a bit. Yah, I just got the new ring in this last Thursday, and to be completely honest, I think its going to do the same thing just as quickly.

I had a little help from someone else whod done them before, and using a tiny snap ring pliers, I stretched the ring a bit, then wedged a small pick in the keep it spread, then used a pocket screwdriver to pry it off. To install it, I just rolled it on, kind of like a piston ring.

This is a very true statement. I replaced more thrashed rings than I can remeber due to the C-man sockets.
