Hi, a friend just gave me some Snap-On tools, his father left him these, and he isn't a tool person.
The two ratchets are definatly Snap-On but the only marking I can find are the off-S-on selector.
Nothing else anywhere, except some markings his father put on them.
Quarter inch drive, both identical.
The box says Snap-on socket wrenches, but only one socket in it was Snap-On, the others various New Britian, Duro, etc.
The 3/8 to 1/2 adaptor is snappy also.
Anyone know how old the box might be?
Or what the part number on the ratchets would be?
Thankshttp://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj121/Chris_Adams/toolsondeskjpg.jpg

are you sure the ratchets are 1\4 and not 9\32 drive. the part number should be on the 'neck' above the handle area.

No, they are 1/4. I thinking they are M70 but don't know which sub-group.
There is no marking of brand anywhere. They look a lot like this

but in much better shape.

Come on, no Snap-On experts today?
I'm hoping to find how old the box is, and what vintage the two ratchets are.
Also, why no markings?
Thanks
Chris

The layout of the inside dividers of the box will help ID it, this box was used for 9/32 and 1/4 sets, but the inside dividers are setup differently for the different sizes/eras. The ratchets look a bit longer than normal. I think its possible that they were extended and the welds smoothes, thus explaining the lack of any markings on the neck.
A pic showing the inside of the box, the other side of the ratchets, and the sides of the sockets (and their part numbers) will make it much easier to properly ID everything.

That's what i thought, drive looks really small. Maybe it's 1/4" in a 9/32" body?

I think so too.

Well, sounds kind of interesting. The ratchets, both identical in almost every way, are long and heavy enough to be 3/8. They are almost a match for my F-70, except for the finish and drive. Looks like you could swap the drive from one to the other.
After reading your thoughts I put them with a bunch of other Snap-On 3/8 ratchets on the desk and I noticed the S between on and off may be a 5.
But these are the ONLY marks on the two ratchets.
The guy that originally owned these many years ago was in the Air Force, worked on transport planes.
I wonder why no marking at all. My other Snap-On ratchets all have lots of text on them, down the back on the F-70, around the handle on the 710's and FL's.
Loked these things over everywhich way, and no grind marks, no text removed.
One looks like it had a kit put in it at some time, the other does not.
The box is undoubtably a 1/4 inch socket set box, don't have another picture but may get one later.
The ratchets of course didn't come with it, longer than the box, different finish from the one socket that seems to have come with the box.
I am just curious about the box, and if I find anyone who actually wants the box enough to pay shipping they can have it.
The ratchets seem to work great and are going in the ratchet drawer.

Possibly the unmarked ratchets are much newer than the box, and are nothing but cheap Snap On knockoffs.
Remember, Snap On has had to change several designs over the years because of crappy clones.

I have never, ever seen any example of a clone or fake of this ratchet style.

This is a mystery. The fact that they have a date code, just about says they are snap on. So someone post the date code sheet so the op can date them. I think they may have been rebuilt at some time, the faceplates are black, faceplates from the era that matches the rat style would be chrome. These are probably some sort of made for the military tools would be my best guess. As for the box, would need a pic of the inside to get some sort of date range. So post a pic of the inside of the box.

Thanks for the help on these.
The third ratchet is an F-70-M that I used for comparison.
The 1/4 are very like it, seem newer, and are of coures, chrome. No oil hole in the top of the quarter.
The box is 6x4.
Thanks again for any input.

Thanks for the pics. The box is mid to late 40s, and is a 1/4dr box. The rats are odd, 1965 date code, I feel that they are special made military, but could be special made industrial, nice tools to own.

Thanks to you and Chad (who PM'd me with much the same info.
The man who had them originally was a retired Air Force technician. He was active service working on planes in 1965, and one of the wrenches has a number and his initials on it, common on the flight line in that era.
So the idea that they were made for the military is almost a given.
His son is clearing up the estate now, and since he knew I was 'into' tools he offererd me all the hand tools, but I only picked up these few items, mostly because they were Snap-On. He donated the rest to the Salvation Army, but I knew these would be 'high graded' in about a second by anyone working there, and the ratchet with the intials will make a great reminder of good man, and I can use it every day.
Thanks to all who posted.
