View Full Version : Drill Press Spins Wrong Way

I got a Clarke benchtop drillpress from Tractor Supply for $30 because it had a cracked switch bracket. I tried to use it but it spins backwards. :wtf: This isn't three phase, so to my understanding simply switching wires will not fix it, correct? However, I find it hard to believe that a mass produced drill press had an incorrect motor installed as I found no other cases online. Any ideas?

Thanks.

P.S. I know, I know, I should have gotten a higher quality drill press, but now that I have this one I feel a need to at least figure out what the problem is.

Look on the name plate of the motor. Often they will have a schematic for reverse rotation. It will involve swithcing a couple of wires around in the motor where the incoming power wire is. If you don't understand the schematic, post a picture and I or someone else will help. If the schematic is there, its an easy fix.

Or buy left handed drill bits:lol_hitti

It is reverse wired, reverse them back and it should run fine.

Don't apologize for your drill press, if it pleases you that is all you need to worry about, let the rest of em go to thunder.

The smart ass answer is to turn the plug over. But I'd try reversing the wire(s) to the motor first.

It is a 'special' drill press for left hand drills only. :spit:

is the motor mounted upside down. Im a journeyman electrician and reversing the hot and nuetral wont do crap. Its single phase not 3 phase..

I was just about to say that!

Switching wires won't change anything as far as I know. The motor does not have a wiring schematic on it (I looked). The mounting bracket is welded off center to the motor case and bolted to the fixture, so flipping the motor around (if that would even work) is not possible, since the motor would interfere with the body of the press.:headscrat

Sounds like the QC at the fine, modern, factory in China might have had an off day, maybe after a long weekend off for Chinese newrear?

Another reason to avoid 99 percent of the junk at TSC.

An electric motor shop maybe able to help you. Some single phase motors can be wired to run either direction. It involves swicthing some of the internal wires and a motor guy would know which ones to switch. The motor is probably Chinese and may not have that capacity or it could have been wired wrong at the factory.

Turn it over or install the drill bits upside down.

I am having a hard time beleiving this. If its a single phase motor it can only run one way.

Leaving China,I still have a hard time with it even being bacwards.

Are you sure its turning the wrong way.

Let us see a vid of start up.

Does the motor have a capacitor? What color wires connect to the cord. Alot of times there are two wires going to the hot and another two going to the neutral. Take one of each and swap them, that will make the motor turn the other way.

Ex. If you have red and blue connected to the hot, and brown and yellow connected to the neutral. Then red and brown to hot, and blue and yellow to neutral will reverse the motor.

you have to reverse the starting windings and capacitor...
there's usually a centrifugal switch also
these are all in series, just reverse the leads...

this will start it spinning in the opposite direction...

Yes, reversing the black and white wires won't change anything.
No, you guys who say single phase only runs one way haven't ever worked with motors. Most single phase motors are reversible. Some come with a reversing switch built in.
This motor 99% sure can be reversed by finding the wiring diagram. If it isn't anywhere on the motor, check with the importer or go to a retailer and look at one which is running correctly.

If the wires go into a box on the motor and the black and white input wires hook to a bundle of 3 wires each, you can reverse the rotation by switching the #5 and #8 wires. I just did it on a 1 1/2 hp motor for the belt grinder I'm building.
