Well I've had this Chas Parker vise hanging around for awhile now.I swiped it on my dad on my last trip to Ontario.I figured I'd give it a fresh coat of paint and get the rear jaw freed up.It's designed to rotate when you remove the locking pin to allow odd shaped things to be clamped in it according to the old advertisements I've read.

Mad,nice vise. The wrench for the swivel base is somewhat hard to find if what I've read is right.Cool to see another Parker that still has it.Mine is getting the paint stripped and redone.I'll have to ask dad where he got it the next time I'm talking to him.It may have come out of the ministry of transportation garage he worked at in Ontario or it could have come up from newyork with some stuff he got when his brother passed away.

Yeah,it doesn't strike me as the type of design that you would use as a general hammer and beating type of vise.It seems more of a precision holding type of vise. The jaws match up really well when it's closed up and it doesn't have a lot of slop in the movement of the slide or the swivel jaw.

Agreed. I'd use it but for filing and stuff like that.
That its nice n tight with good jaws makes it even better.

Just bought this heavy duty Chas Parker for $40. I read somewhere on the internet that it is recommended the patina not be removed or damaged. Does this vise has patina.

Mad, is that the original paint ?

I think the paint may be original. The knurling on the jaws indicates that it has seen only very light use.

O.K., but there is as a $300. handling charge to compensate me for the 1/2 mile I had to carry it back to my car, with my daughter on my shoulders.:)

That vise has a nice patina to it.Has it been repaired down at the bottom of the fixed jaw side?Looks like somebody did a brazing job on it.Nice work if it is.$40 is a good price.

Thats interesting to me.
I thought that by the time the handle hub went from bulbous to cylindrical they had started painting them grey or some other colors.
It looks like the letters are highlighted yellow too.
I'll remember that if I ever have to restore one.

It is a very dark gray. The letters may be a faded yellow or a yellowed white. I assume it it is a lacquer based paint. It is a thin coating and there are a few places where some type of solvent dripped down from the jaws and stripped some streaks in the paint.

It is very bright. In an old local history journal I have there is a pic of the inside of the Brown & Sharpe factory. The pic is dark and grainy but you can clearly see the lettering on the bench vises. They used Parkers.

I wasn't paying attention at the time when I bought it. I only notice the repair when I got home. Apparently, they remove the non-flat portion and brazed a flat piece in there instead. I was thinking of painting it, but didn't want to ruin the patina. I kinda like the rusty look so I may just leave as it.
