Hi. New to the board here and in the proccess of building my garage. It a 24X32. It will be a story and a half with the upstairs being 13 1/2 X 32. The downstairs will be 9' the upstairs will be just a lille over 8' in the ceter 6' and then dropping to 5'6" on the sides. My problem is this....my wife hates it. My contractor just started framing it yesterday and my wife absolutly despises it because of the location to our house. It is actually to the right side about 30' away from the house , but it is about 15' in front of the house. In another words you get to the garage before the house when you come up the driveway. I was wondering if anyone here had a similar setup that could share some pics so I can try to smooth this over. The slab/footers have been done for about 6 months now so it shouldn't have been a surprise but I guess its different when you actually see the walls go up.
Thanks,
Mike

Can you show us a picture of what you have so far?

My first thought was that the right front porch on the house might bring the proportion back into focus for her. But it's hard to guess that without knowing what you have going so far.

My house faces directly into the intersection, my garage faces one of the 2 streets...here's a rear view.

Here's one of how they connect to one another via an 8' wide by approximately 20' long covered breezeway on which is our hot tub & wife's outdoor kitchen.

Here's one of house front with garage off to the right:

It sounds like it's a little late now... :)

Krupp didn't mind visitors seeing his shops before his house:

The whole idea of the house dominating the shop(s) is a modern suburban mode of thinking.

Now the thing to do is develop a landscape plan that minimizes the garage - along the lines of my layout....the space between house & garage is landscaped to look like the hidden garages of New Orleans or Charleston.

I'll try to get some pics tonight if I can. Here is a basic drawing to give you an idea of layout.

BTW: You have a very nice setup. I like it.

My shop is connected to my house (under the same roof) via a nice breeze way that has plenty of confortable seating, built-in grilling/cooking area and a flat screen tv on the outside wall of the shop.

My wife vetoed all garage-in-front houses we looked at when we bought ours. I don't get it either.

Turn the front of the garage into an old filling station of the period when the house was built....use same siding, etc.
