Check out these three ratchets I picked up. A blast from the past!
Craftsman BE with 1/2 dr square pass through.
Early Craftsman oval head 3/8 dr Forged in USA with a date code (u).
An older Herbrand S10 1/2 dr wirh a verticle sliding selector button.

The Craftsman oval head is really neat.

Nice, those Herbrands are really smooth.
For a coarse toothed old-timer ratchet, those old Herbrands - at least the ones with the slider buttons - are some of the smoothest ratchets around. I think they're even slightly smoother than the old Plomb/Proto ratchets. Got a Billings with a slider that I've suspected is a Herbrand relative that's as equally smooth. Got another Herbrand slider with a round handle on the way from fleabay that I expect to be smoooooth as well.
That 3/8" Craftsman shouldn't be a slouch in the smooth department either.

That oval CMan was made by Plomb - very smooth. It was made only for a very short time around the late 30's.
