View Full Version : Wheelbarrow Fury...Upgrade Tires?
Wheelbarrow fury occurs this way: You are pushing a barrow full of broken concrete chunks from the garage floor you pounded up. You have a good momentum going, but danger lurks ahead in the form of a dip/gopher hole/rut in the ground. The barrow's dinky wheel places the metal cross-brace in front of the tire so low, that a dip plunges it into the dirt and stops forward momentum immediately. Well, forward momentum of the barrow...your shin continues with full force into the metal bracing on the rear of the barrow, and then you want to punch something.
Seriously, this bothers me a lot because it is such a stupid, frustrating event. I have three wheelbarrows, some vintage and one newer, and I've experienced this with all of them. Are taller barrow tires available that will fit properly while giving me the ground clearance I need not to ram the front end in the dirt when pushing a load?
Surely I can't be the only person who has had this issue and hated it!:headscrat

Nothing some glue, screws and wood can't fix - build a better barrow!
How big is your current tire? All the Jackson's come with 16" tires. In just checking their website they also have one with twin front wheels. Probably expensive though...

use a bigger tire and move the tire farther foreward
redesign/replace the front brace with one that goes up and had a skid plate on it

I gave up on the one wheel ones. I only use that big yellow one from HD with two wheels. Can have a brew and push at the same time.

x2 on a 16" wheel, only way to go.
Personally, I freaking hate dual wheels. They're a royal PITA to maneuver around.
I'll measure the wheel today and see what I have. If less than 16", time for the upgrade.

You can get up to 20" bike tires from EZHaulCart (http://www.ezhaulcart.com/our_products.php). They also have 16" wheels.

If you go with an oversized wheel you will have to move the axle back to keep from hitting that front cross peice.

My buddy and I had the same conversation about manuevering the 2 wheel barrows. I have dropped enough loads of dirt over the years that the 2 wheeler was for me. I have a plastic 2 wheel deal from sams club. Works great for the 2-3x year I put mulch down or move some dirt. Its a 6 cu ft and just has regular barrow tires.

Drinking and driving you should be ashamed of yourself.

I'm very concerned about the anti-gopher sentiments expressed in this thread.

Dont come around my house then, I have been fighting Moles/gophers for over 2 years with every brand and homemade remedy i could find. They are literally terrible around this area and nobody can seem to get rid of them, I have used Pellets,Gummy worms, Grub killer, Truck exhaust, Garden hose, Wheat wevil killer, Lye, Spike traps, Run traps, Water... Literally shoved about 20ft of garden hose in a hole and ran the water for like 15 min... Never backed up, Dunno where it all went., Every yard care facility has parked in my driveway at least once in the last 2 years and have yet to rid my yard of these pesky critters. Sorry but i hate Gophers/Moles....
