They started reducing their prices, only 10% off all tools so far, but I picked up a couple of things yesterday. The 8 piece Craftsman Professional screwdrivers which I really like, and they had one Craftsman 5 gallon portable air tank left for 25 bucks. I removed the air line it came with, which had a permenant tire chuck on it, and replaced it with a short length of air hose with quick couplers on both ends so I can fill the tank of up and use air tools on it if need be. It holds 135 psi of air, and I tested out my impact gun on it, and it would take awhile to empty it. Pretty handy to have around I think.

I never know what to think when those Sears Hardwares go out of business.
There was one near me that closed more than 4 yrs ago. At that time I was scared Sears was in trouble, but they are still around.

Hacketstown NJ? I might head up and see what is available, trouble is there is nothing I need, I'm afraid I'll fill a cart up with a lot of stuff I don't need nor may ever use. Wait, that pretty much describes what I already have................

The craftsman pro series screwdrivers are made in USA and they are their attempt to compete with the truck brands.... they are MUCH BETTER then the normal clear handled junk they sell now. The standard screwdrivers with with the clear handles of yesteryear were pretty good but the new ones are poorly machined and the steel is incredibly soft! On the pro's; the return rate was lower and the shanks are made of a better and higher quality heat treated steel.... if you have to or want to buy craftsman screwdrivers, do yourself a favor, get the craftsman pros!

Yes those USA made ones are great! Not as nice as my snappys but pretty close. The older black craftsman pro's were junky compaired.
I thought all SH Stores were closed.

"Eddie Lampert's Sears experiment looking like a failure"
Read this article; OUCH!!!! Much of what is written in this story; rings true to me as a fomer sears employee of 7 years... .
http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/08/23/eddie-lamperts-sears-experiment-looking-like-a-failure/
Read the comments after the article; very revealing, telling and right on the money! I especially like this one....
"paul smith said...
I watched Sears go from a service-oriented, quality retail store to a k-mart. I always bought my clothes, shoes, jewelry, and appliances there. They were of high quality, with knowledgeable sales people, (on commision), and quality merchandise. Now, it's just another discount emporium with minimum wage kids stocking crap in bins for the customer to pick over... Tore up my Sears Card years ago, and never went back. And I'm but one of thousands or miillions that can tell the same story. When you sacrifice quality for crap.... You can close the doors."

I leave near Hacketstown and saw an announcement in Thursday's Newark Star Leger that it was closing. I drove there Thursday only to find the sale was going to start on Friday. I asked the girl behind a register if I could fill a cart and leave it in an aisle. I would be there bright and early Friday morning so I could heck out. No deal she said. She told me the discount was going to be 10% and would increase as the days went on.
After walking up and down the tool ailes I decided there was nothing there that I would save that much on that I really needed. With the good deals that appear from time to time, 10% off the regular price of even the 19.2 volt cordless stuff didn't bring me back.

sears hardware were stand alone stores that had a great assortment of fasteners and mine had a decent tool selection, it closed a few years back.
they should have burned down the big sears instead

Sucks for you Canadians. The Craftsman Pro screwdrivers are great. made in the USA and really nice quality. my father has had a set for a few years now, which made me want to go get a set of my own. The store is in Hackettstown, NJ. I picked up a bunch of boxes of washers, since all of the hardware nuts and bolts stuff was 30% off. I was there Thursday too, and the girl behind the counter told me the same thing. That chick has worked there for a while now, and she's got a tight little body on her, let me tell you.

I prefer the previous ones with the hard black handle, those gray/red ones are crap to use, ergonomics is all wrong:(

I agree totally on the handle ergonomics; I think they are too fat!! I was mainly referring to the strength of the shanks/tips... they are the best Craftsman has to offer! That being said; IMHO, there are better screwdrivers out there... Wera, Wiha, Snap-On etc. the list goes on!

Yes, but some of the folks that shop at HF won't necessarily ever step foot into Sears.
Sears HW clearance? No thanks. Whenever there's a clearance, the ebayers typically get to the good stuff first. =( *grumble grumble*.

The Sears Hardware store here in Indy is still open. Guess I will be on the lookout for it to close soon.
I bet they would make enough money to keep their stores open if they could build a decent website. Fire the 14 year old using the commodore 64 in his mom's basement and get a real site that displays your search results with any other filter in the world beside what they currently have: "Sort by: Complete Randomness With a Dash of Irrelevance."

I live in Delaware Ohio, just north of Columbus and the Sears HW just down the street from me is closing also. They have everything at 10% now but I am keeping an eye on it.
This sucks because if I was in the middle of something and needed to pick up a tool that I didn't have it was only a minute away, oh well.

Yea, I was in there Sunday. Didn't buy anything. 10% off full price is more than if you just wait for stuff to go on sale. I will miss having the store up here though.

I remember when the Sears Hardware closed in Torrington, CT 3 years ago. First the prices started getting marked down then they seemed to go back up some before being marked down again! This was over a 2 month period.
I went the second to last day and they had moved all the leftover merchandise to one aisle and had the rest of the store roped off. Of course the last of the merchandise was basically just dumped there and you had to dif through to find anything. I grabbed a few metric raised panel wrenches that were about 20 cents each.

I liked the older black handle cman pro screwdriver and I like the new red ones. for me they feel better than the plastic standard ones
I hit a killer deal at one of the sears one time. for some reason they treat the screwdriver on the little black holder thing different than the ones that sit in a rack and dont have the little black hanger thing.
the had the pro versions without the little black hanging thing marked down (in the computer) to $1.98
they had about 10 or 12 of them so I bought them all. found that deal by pure dumb luck
I wonder what would happen if you took a broken canadian cman into a sears here in the US (and far away from the border)
most of their people are so stupid that I bet they would swap them for the better US stuff

I rarely purchase anything from Sears Hardware. I go instead to the Sears mall stores. From my past experiences, I noticed that most Craftsman hand tools are priced $3 to $4 more at Sears Hardware than at the Sears mall stores. In addition, sometimes the Sears Hardware stores do not honor the sale prices within the weekly national sales ads. Earlier this summer, the Sears Hardware store near me would not honor the 50% all Gearwrench hand tools promotion. I had to travel 30 minutes south of me to another Sears Hardware store where the manager would give me the 2 piece Gearwrench roto head ratchet set for half off.

I worked at Sears Hardware about 10 years ago for a couple summers. I had a good time working there. Smokin deals! All of them here in town closed except for one on east side of town.(that I know of) They were like a pretty normal harware store until the appliances came in. Had to make room for that stuff so other depts. started to shrink.

Nealcrenshaw,
The Sears Hardware store on Vine Street in Eastlake, OH is the one with the higher prices as compared to the Sears Mall store in Mentor. If I have to shop at a Sears Hardware store, I will drive to the ones in Willoughby Hills (on Bishop Rd.) or Solon (on Bainbridge Rd.). These 2 Sears Hardware stores have better lighting, provide better customer service, and price match with Sears.com. I have a feeling the Sears Hardware store in Eastlake might go out of business in late 2009 or sometime in 2010 due to poor customer service and light foot traffic.

Same story in the Columbus area. The big Sears stores a Polaris and Tuttle Malls have a large selection and prices are lower than the Westerville Sears Hardware near me. The 10% gets them back in line with the regular Sears stores regular prices. I still try to buy from my local Sears Hardware, because I like having them there. Saves some gas and it is more convenient. But for big stuff, I go to the big stores, or buy on-line and try to pick-up at my local store.
Yesterday I stopped by the Sears Hardware in Delaware OH that is closing. I checked some plumbing and electric parts I've been shopping, and even with the 30% discount, they aren't competitive with big box stores. For example they had a 10' 3/4 section of (M/Blue)" copper pipe that was marked 22.xx and would get a 30% discount at the register. The same pipe was 13.xx at Menards with no discount.

Does anyone know if this all Sears Hardware stores that are closing or just select markets/stores?
I'll need to keep an eye on the Sears Hardware down the street from my house. I don't need anything in particular so saving 10 or 20% won't make me buy but 30 or 40% off probably would.

Sears Hardware stores closed 4-5 years ago around here, (Metro Detroit area). A shame too, good tool selection and people who actually knew something about what they were selling. A refreshing change from standard issue Sears stores.

Went back to my Sears Hardware again today to see they dropped their prices any more. All tool boxes were 20% off. They had a two deep drawer Craftsman intermediate box on display for 39 bucks, I couldn't resist since I've been needing a few more drawers, and it matches the rest of my box. Pics tomorrow...

Yep, tools, hardware, a paint section, lawn stuff, and appliances, that's it.
The rumor locally is that the strip mall that my Sears Hardware is located raised their rent 4k more a month. Not sure if its at all true, but that's what i've heard.
