Toolbox Covers

So I have the Craftsman box pictured below, and I have been looking for a cover for it and can't seen to find one for a decent price. I do a lot of woodworking in my garage and would like to keep all the dust off of it. Right now I have a Snap-on cover that I bought on ebay for $25(I don't think it is a real Snap-on cover). It has served its purpose and works great but the only problem is my box is about 42" wide and the cover is close to 56" wide and is also way to long for it by 5" and drags on the floor. Anyone know where I can get a cover for it without having to spend $100 to have it custom made.

There used to be a guy on Ebay Motors that would make custom toolbox covers for around $60. You could also check out the demensions on the outdoor grill covers at your local bar b que store.

boat cover guy , the nascar boys have some nice heavy vinyl covers for the war wagons - they leave em outside at the track

Couldn't you make your own from a tarp or something? Of course if you want it to be real nice that may not work...

I would like it to look nice and fitted. Below is a picture of my current cover. As you can tell it is way to big and i'm not that big of the Dale Jr. logo on it. It drags to much and sometimes the car gets parked on top of
the cover part hanging on the ground or I trip over it.

It's not a PITA to pull that off everytime you need a tool? I could see maybe doign it with a 9-5 job working out of the box, but a home box I know I'd never put it on. I mean I close the top lid on it maybe once a year.

If I was working, I wouldn't put it on every time I got a tool. I would cover it when I was done, though. It will keep all the sanding/grinding/normal dust out of the box.

As for closing the box, I lock mine when it's not in use.

I don't use my toolbox everyday. I only use it maybe once a week. When I first come in I uncover the box and leave it off. If i'm doing wood working(sanding, cutting) I most likely don't need my toolbox and leave it covered. Plus my shop gets dusty and the cover keeps the box clean. I like to take care of my stuff and want this box to last a long time.

If you'd be interested in cutting the cover you have, down to fit, let me know. I've been doing upholstery work since '72. I can't see the post of your cover. As long as the logo isn't a problem for you, it won't be a big deal. Let me know, Mike.

If I'm painting near the box I throw a blanket over it though. Dust I just blow off with the air gun when I clean the place or maybe wipe it down with a rag if I'm feeling really ambitious.

I wax my box (that sounds dirty). I also wipe my tools down with alcohol before I put them away. Once a week, I wipe down the top with glass cleaner. That's probably why my 7 year old C-Pro box looks nicer than 90% of the 1-2 year old snap-on boxes at work.

A. I paid enough for it.

B. I'll have it for years and want to take care of it.

C. It looks like hell to customers when a mechanic has some ratty old beat to hell toolbox. If he doesn't take care of his own stuff, why would he take care of their car/plane/motorcycle/whatever?

There are two guys on my crew with Snap-On boxes 3-4 years newer than mine. They don't take care of them, and they're dirty, scratched, cut up tops, etc. Do their boxes get noticed? Nope. The customers come talk to me about mine, and half the time mention how ratty the other ones look. While this may not translate to how they work, the perception is most definitely there on the customer's part.

The same basic ideas apply to my box at home.

I may have a generic black cover that will fit yours, allow me a few days to "find it". I'm in the process of a move, and honestly don't know where I put it in the garage years ago :headscrat

I agree a nice toolbox is eye candy and all, but I know many mechanics that have sunk tons and tons of $$ on a fancy toolbox and instead of turning wrenches they are always fawking around with their tools/toolboxes... and aren't even good at turning wrenches to begin with.

Not saying that is you, and nothing wrong with keeping anything you own looking nice but at the same time there is a point where it's OCD for sure.

No argument there. I only wax it 1-2x a year. I don't cry if I get a scratch on it, but I'll do my best to not do it, also. I sand/varnish my top every 3 years or so, and lay something down on top if I'll be beating it up.

There's a happy medium.
