So, I took my students on a field trip today to a "Construction Career Day", pretty neat event really. They got to speak to different companies about apprenticeships, run heavy equipment, etc. Went over to look at the army recruiter's setup. My how was I impressed. They had a vehicle called a "Palletized Load System" that was set up with a "pallet" for heavy equipment repair. Basically they were designed to haul rockets, ammunition, etc. to battle. This is the military's version of the common man's mobile service truck. Naturally I had to snap some cell phone pics to share with my GJ cohorts.

This thing is about the size of a roll-off dumpster, and goes on and off of the truck in the same manner.

The guy showing us the truck opened the drawers on the vidmar cabinets to reveal all Snapon, Williams, Proto, etc., tools in sizes up to 2 3/8". Welders, 36kw generator, 80 gallon compressor with some obscene cfm rating. Oxy-acetylene torches, compressed nitrogen, you name it.

Found this picture on OshKosh website to give you an idea of the truck this thing sits on.

I used to work on those PLS trucks and HEMTT wreckers among other vehicles as a contractor. Detroit diesel, Allison trans, they ride like a caddy believe it or not. They were designed for one person to operate, and a skilled operator can back up to a pallet, grab it with the hook, pick it up onto the truck, back up to and couple to the trailer, push the pallet from the truck to the trailer, uncouple from the trailer, grab another pallet, recouple to the trailer, and drive away all without getting out of the cab. Pretty cool rigs

Yep, and there is another one on the truck as well, craziness. The guy said the "tool box" cost about $250,000, the truck to haul it will cost you another $250,000.
