I have an old 3/8" air ratchet that I like and always worked real well, but recently the air valve went bad. Looks like there was a plastic ring molded around the outside of the valve "spool" that disintegrated from oil and age, so that as soon as you couple it to an air hose, you immediately have "full throttle".

It's been a good one and I'd spend a few bucks on parts versus a new ratchet (though I'd love to try an Aircat ACR801R), but I don't know how to find parts for it. It's a NAPA branded ratchet, and was made in Japan. The model number was obliterated off the nameplate when I bought it, 20+ years ago at a swap meet from a "reconditioned air tool" vendor. I can get good dimensions on the part(s) I need, but that's about it. Any ideas?

a pic of the ratchet will probably help. someone here will be able to identify mfr and part number.

most of those air ratchets have fairly common parts I'm shure a throttle valve from a CP or an IR would work so find a IR orCp repair station in your area and have at it. you can usually tell what type of throttle valves air ratchets use right from the drawings on the parts lists. Are you sure that the model you have that ring around the aluminum part is not a destoyed from age and use O ring alot of air ratchets just use o rings on the throttle valves.

Krusty, great idea on the picture, will try to get a couple tonight.

vssjim, I don't think it is just an o-ring. The way it is made, the return spring has push against it, and there is no groove for an o-ring to seat in.

As suggested, here are a couple photos. First, the ratchet itself:

And the valve components in question. The green plastic bits are what's left of the sealing ring for the plunger or spool. I went ahead and pressed the brass seat out of the ratchet body, but I wouldn't have needed to.

If this looks familiar to anyone, please speak up. :)

it look's like an astro. you might call them and ask for parts.

You're right, it could be. The parts diagram for the standard 3/8" on the website shows parts looking a lot like these. No dimensions on them, though, would have to call.
