View Full Version : Building a vibrator

No....Not that kind of vibrator:lol_hitti
Im wondering if anyone has built a vibrator/shaker for a sandblaster presure tank or blast cabinet?
I know TP tools has one for their cabinets for like $80 bucks, but whats the fun in that? (Plus shipping to Canada / duty will bring the price way up)
I was thinking some sort of eccentric disk on a electric motor. I dont want to use a air motor, for obvious reasons of extra air consumption.
What kind of weight would produce a decent shaking action? without shaking my cabinet or pressure tank apart.
What speed or HP of motor? Will the vibrations kill the bearings in the motor in short order?
Would a fast or slow shake be better for sand?
Ive seen several vibrators on ebay, however price is an issue. Im going to keep my eyes open for bargains though.
Just throwing it out there for some ideas. I still need to round up a motor and the necessary parts, so this might not happen for a while. But any advice would help. Will this even work?

Do you need full compressor pressure for blasting? If not maybe some kind of air motor in series on the line would work?
How about some kind of handle or pedal you could wiggle when needed? Foot pedal for a bass drum bonking on the side might work.

That's exactly the kind of vibrator I was thinking of when I read the thread title. Women don't need us no more. :D

Half true. If someone invented a vibrator that came with a lifetime ,large paycheck every week, we'd be gone like the dinosaurs. Options might include large ears for listening, no mouth, and built in gps to lead them to the malls.

That's closer to a mechanical bull than a vibrator I think.

I've seen videos of women using it.
There's no way I can compete with that thing.

scooby, I've thought the same thing. We used to use vibrators to uload lime from rail cars at work. These things were HEAVY, about 75 lbs and had to crawl under the car to attach. They were air driven which doesn't help our needs. The mass of the vibrator, I think, was to keep them from walking out of the angle support brackets. Plus, the metal on the rail car was at least 1/8" thick or maybe thicker.
With the thin sheet metal on the blast cabinet, I don't think it will take much to work. I was looking at one of those "back massagers" at Walgreens the other day and wondering if it would be enough? I didn't buy it but started thinking about using a 1/4 sheet palm sander instead. I haven't figured out how to attach it to get the most vibration. Also thinking about replacing the foam pad with a piece of rubber gasket material to get the most motion transfer. Just in the thinking stages, but i thought I'd throw that out. LMK if you come up with something.

A $10 pawn shop palm sander might be the way to go. I know that Grainger and McMaster carry vibrators, but I don't know how cheap they get. Any small electric motor with an eccentric weight on the shaft should work fine for what you are doing. Keep us posted on this, because I am tired of whacking the side of my blasting cabinet to get the abrasive to settle.

Don't bother with a vibrator, get rid of the siphon set up and go with a PA Blaster set up. It is worth the $10 for the plans, I LOVE mine. No more clogs or wasted air.

Ya guys gotta get your mind outta the gutter :bounce: While there has been great suggestions id feel a little awkward buying a sybian for my sand blaster, lol although im sure the guy at the sex shop has heard all the excuses before:)
Ive thought of the electric sander, matter of fact i have the same sander and tank as pictured in lametec's post. I just didnt think it had enough "shake" to agitate the sand enough.
I should point out that im not using the syphon on my cab, i have it hooked up with an external pressure tank. And im using Aluminum oxide, not glass or sand, if that makes a difference. I should also mention that my air is quite dry, its run through 40' of black iron, 2 coalessing filters and a dessicant column before my blaster.
Im just getting tired of kicking the sand tank every 30 seconds when blasting. I think most of this problem is due to the design of the pressure tank. The bottom of the tank, where it feeds down to the outlet needs to be steeper. It one of your typical Harbour freight/ chinese type tanks
Theres definitely ready made shakers out there, but they are up there in price. Any more suggestions? Ill post up if i figure out something. Its obviously a common problem that most of us with these cheap blasters face.

LoneGunman has your answer,
I also have been using the PA Blaster mod (find it on EBAY) it works really well and the only time I have to "kick" the tank is when it is almost empty and I am too lazy to refill it because I am almost done with the part I am blasting.

I am using a pressure assist tank. Mines princess auto, but very similar (exactly the same?) as a harbour freight.

If it is a pressure blast tank, even like the one pictured above it will work.
The process involves a secondary cheap regulator and a couple extra fittings and hose. But would be adaptable to any pressure tank system.

Do you have any links to the system your describing?
My tank is exactly like the one pictured, except its blue instead of red. THere is an airline with a valve feeding above the abrasive. There is also a valve on the tank outlet with a T and airline feeding into it.
I think i have the same system as your describing. Could be wrong. Im open to any options that will improve what im using.

Yes, it would work with your setup.
I am not going to give out the guys secrets, he deserves the $10. He spent the time researching and perfecting the method.
