Hi;

I have a chance to buy a used OTC Nemisys for 250.00. It was purchased in 2004 and still looks like new. It has the 2005 update for domestic and asian.

Is this a good buy? If you have it, how do you like it? I can borrow a friends modis, but often it seems like the modis is overkill for what I need.

I will be using it in a shop where I work as a tech. Thanks for any recommendations.

I have a Matco branded nemisys and I am not impressed with it, it's a glorified code reader imo.

Updates will cost you more than the tool.

If you just need something for occasional use it's fine. As far as i can tell it's very similar to the Genisys, just not as expandable... i.e. no scope cart.

That said. I prefer the Solus over the Genisys, hell I prefer my 2500 over the Genisys.

We have one at the shop, and it was the reason I bought a Solus and Vantage for my self.

The problem with the Nemisys is that it doesn't have any bidirectional control. You can't turn components on or off. You can read codes and some pid data but, that's it. However, $250 isn't a bad price depending on what you want it to do.

What are the updates needed for? Does it have some sort of diagnostic help? As far as code readers go, they read the OBDII codes. no need for updates. If you have one, please explain.

Thanks

bi directional controls are a must... at work we use lap top loaded software from ease diagnostics designed especially just for uhaul but we also have full technician access to ford and gm websites

I have a Tech Force (Genysis).................You could buy a Auto Xray 7000 for 300 and change, much better than the Nemisys IMHO

Why are Bi-Directional controls a must? What do they allow you to do?

Bidirectional controls as I pointed out in an earlier post, allow you to turn a component on and off as the PCM would. A cooling fan operating at different speeds would be an example. If you can't exercise the system, you can't fully determine the root cause of failure.

One thing to point out is that many code readers and low end scan tools can only access generic OBD II information. Although this may help pointing you in the right direction for diagnosing why the check engine light is on, you can't access most items in the body control module, EBCM, SRS, or TCM. Alot of that information is proprietary and only available through a OEM scan tool. Aftermarket scan tools are a compromise at best compared to factory tools regardless of whose name is on it.
You have to dertermine what you want your scan tool to do, how much money you want to invest in it, and look at how long you'll be able to use it before purchasing it. Training is the best investment you can make so, that you get the most out of your tools.
