I'm thinking obviously the fiberglass handle will last longer since the head is epoxied to the handle, but some guys still prefer the wood handles. What's your preference and why?

I prefer wood. especially with ballpeins and mini sledges. My buddies didnt believe me Until I had a chance to prove it to them. He was trying to remove the tierod ends out of the knuckle for a tranny swap. he beat on that damn thing for 10 mins with a fiberglass mini sledge, and it wouldnt bust loose. I handed him my ratty old wood handled sledge and it broke loose on the first swat. Something about the wood just transfers the energy better. plus if it ever breaks the handles are less than 5 bucks and a 10 min repair.

I do love the deadblow ball peins that mac/SO sells. those are the tits

Aren't those compo-casts like $75 a pop or so?

I'm thinking a Proto 32 oz. with the fiberglass and rubber grip would be a huge step up for me. :dunno:

I've got a drawer full of the orange composite handled hammers that snap-on used to sell before they switched to the newer red handles. The only wooden handles I own are 4oz, 6oz, and 8oz ball peen hammers for tapping out gaskets. The composite handles are expensive, but worth it if you use them everyday. They don't come loose like the wooden handles, and they don't splinter like the fiberglass handles.

You can keep the wood handles tight by keeping the hammers in a bucket of antifreeze, but that's not really practical in a working shop.

Figured I'd ask and make sure before got one of those things. I use hammers on punches probably more than a hammer by itself. :D

Wood.

I just like the feel and the way it absorbs shock better than the fiberglass.

I've always liked wood handles too, but when they get loose around the head, a replacement handle never seems to be available. I gotta loose 12-oz. right now; I don't know what the hell I'm gonna do with it.

I want to say I 'prefer' wood but I've never tried fiberglass. Wood handles are all I've ever used.
For claw hammers I like both wood and rubber (Estwing) but I think a ball pein would be different.

Go to Epstiens they have very good prices on handles 12oz is about 2$ (double that around here)

I prefer wood handles, cant stand fiberglass anything.

wood every time for normal ball pein, claw, sledge or lump hammers.
Whatever they come with for deadblow.

I'm a fan of wood myself. I like the nice "solid" feel, and if it breaks, it's inexpensive to fix. Just a personal preference I suppose.

10-17-2009, 11:22 AM
Well since the fiberglass handles still have wood cores its a matter of preference. Personally unless its over 3 lbs and the handle over 12-15" long I could care less. At that size I like the fiberglass because it takes more to break them.

Hence, my converting to one piece hammers. I had a fiberglass handle shatter, and a hammer head go whizzing by my ear. The head went into the sheetrock and down the wall, it's still in there.:spit: After nearly cutting my ear off, I decided I liked one-piece hammers.

Sounds like a good reason. How are the one piece? Do they transfer the energy well? How about any vibes in the handle?

I have a estwing framing hammer that I love but sometimes I need to change as it rattles my hand a little too much.

I keep a bucket of spares. Here are some recent rebuilds also. Coat them with polyurethane when finished.

for a ball pein? wood. I like the flex, and if I'm using a ball pein I tend to actually be peining a rivit, so it's not a one hit and quit kind of deal. lots of tapping.

Carpentry - I go for estwings, though learned my lesson on the lest one I bought. Alwaus check the hammer against a hard object in the store. I got one, that fortunately I've missplaced that rings like a bell everytime I hit something with it. that one I won't use.

My weighted rawhides are all wood, because that's what they came with. if they broke, I'd probaby replace them with wood again.

same with my large sledges. I do have aestwing mini sldge that I tend to use for demolition work because I don't have to worry about damaging the hammer if I miss.

I remember a while back, at the old shop removing a seized wheel from a car with a rubber hammer. I took a swing and watched as the head flew accross the shop, narrowly missing the wing of a car sitting on the other ramp. Damn was i glad they didn't make contact..

Now i use a 4' scaffold pole. :)
