Was at Sears returning my dogbone wrench today and noticed they had 1/2 drive ratchets on clearance. They were the older style round head kind where you turn the black thing on the back to reverse direction. No release button style. $9
The salesman said they aren't rebuilding them anymore so buyer beware. Since they have to give you a ratchet if it breaks I was thinking about buying one keeping it 6 months then breaking it on purpose and taking it back. They'll have to give me a regular 1/2 ratchet to replace it if they have no repair kits.

Warranty abuse is pretty sad and is one of the reasons sears is making it more difficult to warranty things that actually deserve to be warranted, why not keep the round head until you break it legitimately?

Ok ok. But the warranty does say if you're not satisfyed for any reason...
You're right though it's not in the spirit of the warranty. I have a ton of 1/2 ratchets so I passed this time on it. I also think it has a low tooth rating because it was pretty chunky feeling. I'm too used to my SO ratchets to go back now.

Once you've used a Snap-on ratchet, you'll never want to use a C-man ratchet ever again. The mere thought of using a C-man ratchet will make you sick. :puke:

I've had this particular style in all 3 sizes for many years. They were standard issue in a lot of C-man sets 15-20 years ago. Not too crazy about the 1/2", too top-heavy, but the smaller ones were all I had for a long time and served without incident. Are they as good as SO? Of course not. But they are plenty good enough as spares or in the car/truck tool kit. Dependable, and if they're lost or broken, oh well.

Speaking of - were you returning the dog bone to replace, or cause it sucked?

Well, your idea will work; wether this is some catastrophe for the company, well... it is probably a "blip" on the screen in the grand scheme of all the warranty returns that happen on a daily basis, at your local Sears store.... there are so many discontinued model ratchets out there.... I gave people "different" or "upgraded" ratchets all the time! It isn't a big deal; you will probably get the standard ratchet as a replacement for your discontinued model! That being said; do yourself a favor and get the fine tooth round head (internet/catalog ONLY) that had been around forever or step up to the newer professional 60 tooth design..... they will serve you both well. Unfortunately, as most on here know; the standard ratchets quality has taken a nose dive; I don't know how much verbal abuse I took from customers about these ratchets but it was allot! Stick with the two ratchets mentioned and avoid the 'rest if possible! :) This particular model mentioned; is the model that I told all of my customers to take and throw as far away from you as possible; if these do in fact get discontinued (possible they are just getting the SKU changed); I for one will not mourn their passing! Like many round head designs; this has a problem with free wheeling, issues with changing directions and the area to change the direction can be hard to do, because of the design (or lack of it) on backing plate. There are so many better designs out there.... to choose from! :)

Ah come on...I didn't write the warranty. I didn't do it anyway I was just thinking about it.

I just returned it because after much thought I don't want a China wrench in my box. Sorry I just couldn't do it. I never used it or anything. I'm going to find a vintage Craftsman one.

yup, I thought same thing when I saw those on clearance.
not worth my time to break it and have to drive back to exchange it.
and then if you get hurt in the process of breaking it, you are money behind instantly

I have one of these I picked up somewhere (garage sale I think), and while no means the best, I think I almost prefer it over their standard ratchets. I was planning on placing it in a road box for the truck (still looking for the box, preferably ammo box).

Those ratchets are the Craftsman version of a KD, Allen, Napa, and possibly other Danaher made ratchets without a knurled handle. I know Sears' website listed them as being fully polished but, they're satin finished and definitely not shiney chrome. The 1/4 and 3/8 drive models are also on sale.

Please guys I didn't buy one, it was a thought I had. Don't flame me I'm not going to do it. lol
I don't grab groins or anything. They used to call me Gravygrabber at the dealer I worked for because I used to try and get the gravy jobs all day working flat rate. It's a dealer mechanic thing.

"thinking about" doing something cheesy like that is just as bad as "doing it" in my book

I used the term Gravy Sucking Pig myself to refer to those techs that seemed to draw the easy jobs back in my dealership youth.
However, we all suffer from warranty fraud when the stores go under, prices go up, and legitimate warranty claims become harder to get. However, there are very few members here that haven't picked up a broken tool for pennies and traded it in for new. They may not want to admit it in public but, we've all done it.
I accept your remorse for your errant thoughts besides, Sears would probably only give you a standard raised panel ratchet in exchange and that's not much of a trade up.

The older ones like I have are satin finish, but the newer ones I saw in the clearance bin at Sears the other day were full polish, nice & shiny.

Breaking a tool just to warranty it is pretty sad. However, Craftsman offers life of tool. So it is fine to warranty broken tools you buy or aquire used. But to break them on purpose or try and warranty clearly abused tools is where most of us draw the line. Sadly, there are many low lifes who find a rusty bucket of craftsman stuff left out in the rain and warranty them. That shit an't right!

I say we all need to get one and throw it in the vehicles emergency kit. I think I will buy three. One for each of my vehicles, and one for my home box. That seems like a perfectly legitimate use for these.

I find plenty of rusty C-man tools at flea markets and I just throw them in a reloading tumbler overnight and a cap ful of car wax and they come out new most of the time. I will take them back if the chrome is peeling off.
