Had to stop by Advance on the way home from work this morning; cruising through looking at the tools, and came across one of the Chinese Snap-on worklights. Didn't get any pictures, but here's what it was.

Tag read "Cordless 75w Drop Light". Picked it up, looked at the bulb socket...WTH...it was for a regular light bulb. How do they make that "cordless"???

Read the tag further...."Accepts any drop cord" - sure enough, it was just a cheap drop light that didn't even INCLUDE the cord; thus, it sure as heck was "Cordless" - just not in the usual manner we all know.

Pitiful....I can see some idiot now buying one of these, putting a bulb in it, and wondering why it won't turn on....

I saw that exact same light at Advance the other day- It took me a second or two to figure out what the deal was. When I realized how it worked, I just kind of chuckled to myself and walked off.

BTW, that POS was the only SO "tool" I saw in the place.

Rigmaster, that is exactly the light I saw.

Guess I can pull the power cord out of my monitor and call it "cordless" too, huh? :bounce:

Yep! I noticed this a few days ago when I saw the light advertised online.

Cordless. lolz.

I had a TG post scheduled for Thurs, but might push it forward a few days.

Could it be the start of an epic s/o downfall? From "king" of the tool trucks to auto parts store junk? Ok doubtful.. but that is pretty pathetic. I think ACE hardware or someone was selling "Snap On" flashlights awhile back. There was a thread about it.

Hell, for about the same price on sale, you can get a 20 ft. retractable corded troublelight from Sears

$10 at a local Ace, $15 at Ace online and at Amazon

That is not a Snap-on light; it's a NAPA 7827740 and it's supposed to be blue. :D

Just checked the SO catalog and they don't show this little beauty.

My conspiracy theories -- pick your fav
1. SO ordered some of these branded from a company and then decided that they weren't good enough for the SO line
2. Somebody jobbed Advance
3. Advance is trying to job the gullible

Just looking at it doesn't fill me with confidence. I don't see a good clamp for holding the drop cord. This could mean flickering light, not to mention falling trouble lights.

Cordless could be a poor translation of ' without integral cord'

Take a look at a recent ToolGuyd post about the matter (http://toolguyd.com/2009/09/new-snap-on-tools-knives-storage-products/) - this is no one-time unique occurance.

I've also seen the same description on several retailers' sites meaning that the wording isn't simply a one-time goof on Advance's part.

you will not see these in a catalog from snapon. Someone had the bright idea of letting the average joe own a snap on tool. So they let a company that they bought out supply a really cheap line of products to parts warehouses. I will not touch the stuff and the trucks will not honor any warranty on the tools... It is not the down fall of a company, they are merely using another avenue to generate sales instead of buying the company and shutting the doors.

I bought the gloves b/c they were only $7. MEchanix are at least 2x that so I figured if they work, fine.. They didnt, they are total crap. Took them back to Ace Hardware the next day after they shredded just undoing transmission bolts.

I was in Costco a couple of weeks ago and this guy was looking really hard at a "snap on" (only deserves lower case!)pressure washer. I mentioned that it was sad they licensed their name to chicom built stuff as I walked by. He looked pretty deflated. I guess he thought the tool truck spilled some pressure washers in the parking lot and Costco didnt know what to do but sell them!

Next think we know there will be 80 tooth ratchets in the checkout line next to the laser pointers and key chains... Better yet, maybe they will sell them in the arcade machines where you have to control the arm to pick up your prize. sheesh...

Yes they are. Would you like some coffee to get over the pain:

Would Mr. Customer like a cup of coffee while he waits? We have some freshly ground Snap-off tools coffee. It's the best coffee in town because it's exclusively brewed in a Snap-off tools coffee maker.

not really........they are "officially liscenced products" meaning snap on sold the right's to use thier name, just like clothing and collectibles. they are not regular snap on products.

The thing is, though, there is no way for consumers to differentiate these 3rd party goods from regular S-O tools.

If I'm not wrong you can just give Advance a couple of dollars a week until its paid for.

I wonder how long it will be before there is a cheap HF knock off?

It seems a real shame that a company like Snap On spends so much money to develop this "cordless" technology and you just know it will be ripped off.

In all seriousness I think it may be time for Snap On to start selling auto parts off their truck. Its a two way street dude.

1st post time:)

actully guys what the advance and ace tools are is called "brand of choice" snap on started this about 2 years ago, its for the avarage consumer that dosent see a tool truck but has heard about snap on from freinds or the local auto shop where he takes his car, now the avragage guy dosnet see the value in a $106 ratchet like we do, but they still want a good quality name in tools, i feel the trouble lights have a ways to go to be considered quality, there are a few very nice products from ace that are not avalible off the snap on truck, one of these products is the snap on extention cords very nice quality peice. Now do I agree with the "brand of choice" move? at first i felt the same as most of you, snap on is shooting themselfs in the foot, but after thinking about it, it can be good for the company, if avrage joes buy the "brand of choice" items they might buy more form snap on such as some of our blue point products or even snap on.
