Hi
Am looking to buy another box.
Have been offered a Mac MB1080-LG like this:
http://www.mactools.com/product/tabid/120/p-329382-mb1080-lg.aspx
Have only owned SnapOn (KRA) boxes in the past.
How does the quality on this Mac box compare to to my SnapOn KRA series box ?
How can I find the spec of a Mac Tools box ?
I can't find any detail on the Mac tools (www.mactools.com) web site !
Does the MB1080 have lock & roll ?
Thanks

The Tech series is Mac's version of the KRA series, if I recall correctly. I have the newest Mac catalog at home, if nobody jumps in with details before I get home, I will let you know what the catalog has to say.
It should be on par with the Snap On box.

no meaning to threadjack but what is the Matco equivalent to the KRA and tech series, is it the 4 or the 5s?

Not sure on that, Matco only has the 4S on their website from what I can see... I don't know a whole lot about Matco boxes other than they are pro-grade boxes. I would say, looking at pricing on the website, that the 4S would be equal to the KRA and Tech lines, but not 100% on that.

IIRC, Dave Blank said that all Matco boxes use the same sheet metal guage and frame/subframe. The difference comes in with the casters and slides. 4 series being the lessor, 6 being best and 5 inbetween. I believe the 4 series would be equivalent to the KRA as far as castors and slides.
The mac tech series is Mac's mid line box, probably better than KRA

I currently have a 4s and I can say that it is not nearly the quality of an equivalent snap-on box, cant say about Mac because I havent experienced one.
The drawers have plenty of play side to side, are very hard to open and just dont slide well either. My 4222R has terrible drawer distribution and a big wall in the middle of the top drawer that limits my space a lot. I am really thinking about upgrading to a Snap-on soon.

I see they/re calling it the "Tech Series." Back when I was working at a Toyota shop, a mechanic there had a Tech 1000. I remember it being every bit as heavy duty as a Macsimizer - good heavy gage steel - just kind of a plain looking box with no corner trim. I remember trying out the drawers with the guy standing there to see how the drawers felt; they had some seriously firm detents. Drawers weren't gonna fly open on that box. :)

It would be the 4s.

I have a macsimizer 1350, but mac also makes lesser macsimizers which are in between the good macsimizers and the tech series.
I would hold out and buy a KRL or big macsimizer.
I like the depth of the krl series, but the drawers of the macsimizer (being much longer compared to equivalent snap on) are much more useful.
I have never found matco boxes to be attractive, I would avoid them.

I like the detent ball system on my buddys Tech 1000 over the slide locks on my Classic 78, both boxes are really nice though, the SO was alot less expencive for me so I went with that, I'm quite happy with it.

kra does not compare to the KRL line or even the new EPIQ line of tool storage.
Before you do anything go to that website and you see what the boxes are made of and how they are made.....

I liked the video, but seriously why would snap on make a video of anything else than "their box being WAY F***ing better than every other one.
I'm not sure if it was this video or not, but on one of them they were saying that the cross members on the macsimizer didn't extend all the way to the edge. So I was like, "WTF!?!" went out and looked at mine, and the cross members DID go all the way to the edges.
Don't ever trust a review of retail products that was created by the products manufacturer.

I checked with my Mac catalog, and the only difference between the Tech series and the Macsimizer series are the casters, total options, amount of internal strengthening(not much of a difference overall), and #of BB slides on some drawers.
Overall, the Tech line is pretty damn close to be every bit as good as the macsimizer line, just doesn't have every little top end new touch.

I have the 2 bank Tech Series, and I'm very pleased. Especially at less than half the cost of an equivalent Snap-On KRL.

Yeah, although the Tech series is slightly abouve a KRA from what those with both have said. KRL is pushing it a bit, but I think he was pointing out that for less than half the price of a KRL he got a box that he truly enjoys and essentially performs, in his book, the needed task just as well. Not that the Tech=KRL.

understood, the tech series is a well made box. i have owned two macsimizers and they have rated right up there, possibly higher than my current 6s matco.
my comment was made because i don't think they make a size comparable KRL so a dollar for dollar comparison really doesn't make sense.
in my carrer i have owned 2 craftsman, 2 MAC, 4 snap on and 4 MATCO's..........all have done the job, some better in one respect and worse in others.

That was covered by total options:badteeth:
I can't believe I didn't say that, though. Sizing options is the biggest difference between the 2 lines.

made in the USA. I do recall seeing the words global components.
the mac box that we tore apart did not go all the way across. Now things might have changed a bit after flaws were exposed. Sometimes showing a difference causes the competition to fix any problems that they have.

So are you saying you work for Snap On and are the one that made the video?

I was considering a KRL or the Tech series. I was speaking more along the lines of drawer configuration. I didn't mean to start a war. Apologies for the misunderstanding.

Mine is probably 10 years old, maybe they made them better back then?
