What Kind Grinding Wheels are these?

On TV (programs like Trucks!, American Chopper and so on) I see these grinding wheels that they have on their 4 1/2" grinders, they vary in color orange or blue or green. On the grinding surface of the wheel they appear to have all these grooves cut in them. They don't appear to be the traditional stone type. Anyone know what I am talking about?

Yeah, they are like a low grit sand paper fanned out around the wheel. Much easier to make a flat surface with. Bit pricey though.

Very similar to that only mounted to a backing plate to use on a hand held 4 1/2" grinder like the one below.

Like these? They are called a 'flap disc' you can get them at any autobody supply house, and other places like wal-mart,home depot, lowe's etc.
Ebay has tons of them on there also.
They are about 2x the price of a normal grinding disc, but last about 10x longer.

Has anyone used them? If so how do they compare to the standard griding disc?

I've used them and they work great, there kind expensive at $8 a piece though.

Flapper disks work extremely well.
You can get them in different grits.
The biggest advantage I find is that you simply want to remove paint you just apply light pressure. If you want to remove material you give it more pressure. All of this done with one disk and it won't leave those heavy gouges like conventional disks. I use them alot and don't need to switch to my sander for light jobs.

Best way to see how they work is to give them a try.

they also work good for smoothing out welds, and are the bomb diggity for cleaning up frames

Where I work at during the summer, we built a couple trailers from scratch. We went around the whole trailer and smoothed out all the welds to make it look pretty. I can tell you I LOVE those things. If I had to remove alot of material for some reason or another, I used a standard grinding wheel. But when I wanted to polish it it up and make it look nice, I'd use one of those.

I picked up a few of those at Princess Auto on Friday. About 5 bucks (Canadian $'s) a wheel. Limit 8 of each grit per customer. :D

Princess Auto is kind of like Canada's version of HarbourFreight..

i dont know about the wallmart u have but the one i have its in the back next to sporting goods theres a isle with all the power tools rite before the sporting goods department.. u can also ask someone when u get in the store where the tools department is... hope this helps :pimpflash

They have them at HomeDepot and Sears....

I bought one, but have to figure out (ie, go to Home Depot and see what else I need to purchase) why it won't work on my grinder...
