My Craftsman benchtop works but I need something more, especially with my T roadster project coming up. I'm in the market for a floor drill press. I wanna go used and refurbish if necessary, therefore, craigslist is my friend! I'm hoping for $200 or less. A couple of questions I have are what exactly is the quill?

Also, 15" or 20" swing. What exactly are they referring to? I'll be doing mostly metalworking so I'll be trying to find one with the lowest speed listed. Here's a few. No info on them yet. Can anyone tell what they are just by the photos? One is an Enco. I googled it and it didn't look very promising. I do however, especially like the older Craftsman!

Hi evintho,

The quill is the movable, cylindrical portion of the machine in which the spindle is mounted. It is what moves when you turn the handwheel.

The old Craftsman is by far the pick of the litter. The others are just typical Chinese machines.

Swing refers to the maximum diameter circle the machine can drill a hole in the center of. The distance from the spindle centerline to the column is generally just a little bit more than half the rated swing.
