I'd like a single phase motor to replace a 5 HP 3 phase Emerson motor on an 80 gallon compressor. The frame size, RPM, HP etc seem to match. The price is within $25 dollars of what I could get a "surplus" Baldor motor for on EBAY, without the hassel of bidding and waiting a couple of weeks. Sounds like a decent deal right?
Also, my current motor has a Square D magnetic starter. I plan to call SouthlandElectrics and get appropriate replacement heaters once I get my motor picked out. Does that mag starter sound like it'd work with this motor?
Thanks.

An OEM motor for a compressor would typically be tagged for "special" duty with a high starting torque as determined by the "design" of the motor and its slip curve.
If the frame size and RPM match your the current motor you shouldn't really have an issue. Please note that there is NO thermal protection provided with the motor you have chosen SO over load protection definitely needs to be provided. Sounds like you're aware of this with your motor starter selection. You can go with a NEMA starter with the appropriate "heater" elements based upon the FLA or you can go the cheap way and get an adjustable IEC stater with a range of amps to again meet the demands of the motor.
After all that fun then you need to look at tying the starter into your pressure switch.
If you have meet all these conditions the continuous duty motor with "F" thermal insulation should be fine. Your only up grade would be getting a totally enclosed fan cooled motor but many a compressor run ODP.

Thanks for the reply. I'll probably pick up the motor later this week. I found out that I can get replacement heaters for about 12 bucks (x 3) for my starter. I'll take a look, but I think the pressure switch is already tied into the starter, so I think that part is good to go.

I'm not sure your starter will work. I just don't know. But I thought an equivalent baldor motor sells for about 260-280 on ebay.

The starter will work just fine, he just won't be using one of the terminal sets and contacts in it. Many starters have info in the lid that usually states that its both single and three phase capable.

Thanks for the replies. I'm pretty sure the starter can be used in a single phase application. Thanks for the info about the Ebay motors. I'm gonna take stab at one this week. They've been going for 260-300. Once you figure in $40 shipping, this local CL motor is about the same.

weco-group on ebay. I would take baldor/leeson over dayton, myself.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to just be patient to score a Baldort motor. Just got outbid on one Baldor motor by that Ebay seller with about 9 hours still to go. That one's gonna go for more than I want to pay so I'll wait a couple of days for the next one.
