Usually I don't worry about this kind of stuff, but holy crap! My two week old Snap On 1 1/4 flank drive combination wrench has a case of the chrome peeling bad. Its a $96 wrench and I don't use it too often, but I am not too thrilled. Should I demand better quality tools or is Merks tool polishing rubbing off on me?

I don't have that issue with my $2 swap meet ex HF Olympia wrench, why should you accept it when paying 50x as much?

Snap-on will replace a tool with peeling chrome. Get a new one, and know that you are not being demanding when you expect to have tool that won't kill you via chrome flakes being taken into your bloodstream.

just go ask the dealer. he will warranty it. if there is any type of oil on the wrench during the nickel plating of the chrome plating then it will cause problems.
chrome is very painful under your skin.......

Unfortunately due to environmental concerns it's really difficult to find anyone in this country still offering quality chrome plating anymore. Environmentalists! Their one of the biggest hidden reasons why manufacturing has had to move off-shores.

I have replaced tools for peeling chrome with no questions asked. It is a safety issue. Your dealer should do the same.

You'd rather live in a toxic dump then! Some shit we can just live without didn't need it in the first place.

Were we living in a toxic waste dump 50 or 60 years ago? Nope! Did we have a whole lot of quality manufacturing going on in this country then? Yup! Did skilled Americans have jobs then? Yup!

I guess I can hijack my own thread... What you are really saying is, that its okay as long as its not in your back yard! Or are all of your tools industrial finish?

Was using the whole EPA thing as a way to let you know that you may end up with another flaking wrench even in Snap-On replaces the one you have now.

My 10 year old snappy wrenches do not have chrome peel issues and your new one should not either. Pay a preimum price and expect a preimum product. Just as Chad said, get it replaced. I should not be a problem.

If it had a nice box end that's broached on center with uniform wall thickness.... I'd keep it!!

You know I never looked that closely Merk, I will check it out tomorrow. You know, you crack me up... You were the LAST person that I thought would tell me to keep it. I think next time I drop a grand on a set of wrenches I am going to request you fly out and personally inspect them first

LOL!!

It's just that I've ran into some problems that I consider to be more serious than chrome peel, when it comes to Snap-on wrenches. :D

Excellent post, the day is rapidly approaching where there are going to have be some decisions made, and this may NOT mean decsions made at the ballot box.

The enviornmentalists offer NO alternatives, yet they have the ear of the media and the government. As has been pointed out, this country USED to have the technology to lead the world, now, thanks to the do-gooder mentality, we are challenged even when it comes to producing the basics.

These enviornmentalists have fked up the economy where they originate, then they move into the 'hinterlands' and start their crusade against technology that works, all the while ridiculing the locals as being unenlightened, backwards, pawns of the industrial complex.

Just another reason why the PAID propagandists of the media are nothing but shills for the progressive, liberal viewpoint, as the overpaid, airheads are too arrogant and contemptuous of those who work with their hands to ever give credence to their views.

A great example of how the media spews its agenda without caring about the facts is how it demonizes the oil companies, if you were to believe the crap that the media elite tout as fact, you would 'know' that big oil has nothing better to do with its product than to pump it into the sea to kill the fishies and birdies. Remember this: The sewage of the media profess to be experts on everything, when in reality, they are knowlegable about nothing.

A couple of my wrenches had peeling chrome and a couple sockets. I exchanged them and haven't the problem since.

Couldn't have said it better myself

In fact I would have gone off similarly, but didn't want to get off subject. True thing what you said about the media and their experts. The experts they use should have their credentials looked into before believing em. Great post:thumbup:
