Well, go ahead, post a pic or two of your workbench!
Gonna need one for the new garage, need ideas/inspiration!

I'm in the beginning stages of remodelling/finishing the garage in the 40-year old house my wife and I inherited from her parents. The first thing to do was upgrade the workbench situation. I was going to get a Craftsman bench but found them to be quite flimsey. I got to looking at the bench that was here and found that, while really dirty, it is incredibly sturdy. After adding some masonite sides and a new floor, this is where I started.

I found a guy selling diamondplate on eBay and had him cut and bend some pieces for me. A quart of high gloss gray paint and an afternoon later and this is what I have.
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/3/web/591000-591999/591203_25_full.jpg
The top is 2 feet by 5 feet and it stands 40 inches to the top. I do a fair amount of mechanical work on our two Mustangs and the diamondplate should be really durable and stay looking nice.
My further plans for the garage are drywalling the walls and ceiling, new garage doors and a Race Deck floor. I'll be documenting the transformation on my Cardomain page.

edit: I just re-viewed this thread after almost two years. My pictures on my cardomain account have changed. The second is the only one I currently have up that shows my workbench at all.

NICE. Definatly looks awsome with the diamond plate and paint....
Because i'm working on a tight budget (most of which i want to put into the 'bird itself), i'm probably gonna have to build a workbench myself. The one we've got now is fairly old (I believe its a solid wood door on a set of cabanets, but its always been coverd with so much junk that i honestly cant remember! LOL), i might do something with that....
Any other budget workbench ideas?

I got the old steel workbench frame from my dad (many fond memories ;-), and refurbished it last year after moving to our new place. Like most of my gear now, it's on casters. I have it secured to the wall with "L" brackets so it's solid when using the vice, but is still able to be moved around when needed.

best shot i have of mine right now. Since this picture (2 weeks ago), the work bench has been.. gasp.. cut in half! We had to make space for another motorcycle, so i lost half the bench but it's still big enough for me. Top of the bench is 1/4" metal, it's old and ugly, but it's getting the job done... for now.

My Wife finally brought the memory card back for the digital camera.
The story on the table is that it was my first welding project and I way overdid it. Oxy Ace welding in the cold caused the whole thing to warp. It still works, but it ain't winning any awards.
The polished diamond plate, or wooden countertop would be trashed in 6 months at my place.

Here we go... Garage sale computer desk, baby, to go with the chair i rescued out of somebody's trash :deathmeta
i built the cabinet around my sound system, the pegboard needs to be reorganized again, the small parts cabinets are almost full.
One of these days i'll build a new one with a metal top for welding, but it's held up pretty well for about five years now.

In the name of bringing a thread back from the dead.... how do you find that countertop holds up to weight?
I don't anticipate anything super heavy, but I'd like to have it be pretty durable as well.

Finally finished (almost) building it!!!
(Yes, I completely stole the idea from JohnHenrys48)
4x4 Legs, and 2x4s into another cleated 2x4 in the wall, as well as 2x4 framing on the top for the countertop to screw to. Total cost 85 bucks, all the wood was scrapwood I had laying around or from my neighbor who also had wood laying around. Quart of primer, quart of gloss black, you never know the wood was weathered at all :)
I also backed the entire wall with a 4x8 sheet of pegboard, but I had to notch it in several places to clear the main cceiling joist and a gas line (don't ask.. previous owners were weird.)
anyway, on to the show:

This is my first post  . Here is a pic of my currently cluttered work bench. I got it from my dad a while back. It is home made but done very professionally (don't know by who). I'm in the process of finishing up construction of my new 24'x40' shop and the workbench is still in the attached 2.5 car garage, thus the mess. I have found that rolling microwave carts make nice rollaround benches and you can often get them for free. When the drywall is done in the shop I also have a nice 10' long timber bench that will go in and have plans to build a metal welding table that will be on casters to move around.

Hard to tell details, but....

Russel, I did an entire portfolio on the bench, but have lost it all, had some great pics of the entire production process but alas have no idea where they are.
The 4x4's are notched to accept the 2x4s so they sit in flush in the 4x4s, they could probably just have been glued in but I did both and glued + bolted them in.

a pic of my white bench in it's new home in the 24'x40' shop. Note the book holder that swings down from under the cabinet. Holds shop manuals at eye level yet out of the way and out of the oil while working on things. :rocker:
That's freaking awesome! Best thing I've seen in a garage here yet! :rocker:

Yup, cookbook holder. My In-laws recently remodeled their kitchen and passed this on to me! Too bad they wouldn't let me have any of the old cupboards. I'll try to get a closer pic of it, but I bet you could find one with a google search faster.

I can't tell the actual colors, but it looks like you've used a non-white for the walls--gray? Silver-white-gray?
I'm kind of liking the less-than-sterile white for the walls... a color like the above gives a certain richness to it all vs pristine-ness that white gives...
Its grey.......and its very tidy

Hrere is my bench I inherited from the previous owner of my house. It is extremely heavy. I accidentally turned it over while moving it out of the garage to epoxy my floor. With my jeep and a little winch action, I was able to get it upright again.

I have no idea, but it is one heavy SOB. I moved it on a couple of 300 lb capacity furniture dollies. They where really overloaded, and once I got the bench to the edge of the concrete, "It fell off on its own". You should have seen my face when it went over...priceless.

How is the floor....also I noticed the bottom shelf isnt the reason for the weight because of the bend in the middle....I would personally go and get some heavier steel to hold the weight....just some advice

Yeah the bottom shelf is not as sturdy as the rest of the table. I am not sure what happened, but the bottom shelf has a cut in it that weakened it and I guess over time it has sagged from use.

Here's mine. Bottom is built in three pieces to allow for moving easily when the time comes. Home built birch plywood bottoms, painted, storing most of my portable power tools and air tools. Top is made from 4 locker room benches, solid maple, that were discarded during an update to the school that I work at. I had a local hardwoods shop run them through their industrial planer as my little 10" Ryobi wouldn't dare handle the job. I trimmed them, jointed them and then put the top together. Baseboard trim is made from recycled gym flooring from the same school remodel. The two cabinets above, to the left and right, were left by the previous owner and I made the string of oak cabinets that connect the two. Peg boards in frames above the bench, and to the left and right. Finished dimension of the bench are 30" T, 29" D, and 9' L
It's never this tidy, so I take photos when it is.... :spit:

I'm in the beginning stages of remodelling/finishing the garage in the 40-year old house my wife and I inherited from her parents. The first thing to do was upgrade the workbench situation. I was going to get a Craftsman bench but found them to be quite flimsey. I got to looking at the bench that was here and found that, while really dirty, it is incredibly sturdy. After adding some masonite sides and a new floor, this is where I started.
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/3/web/591000-591999/591203_11_full.jpg
I found a guy selling diamondplate on eBay and had him cut and bend some pieces for me. A quart of high gloss gray paint and an afternoon later and this is what I have.
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/3/web/591000-591999/591203_12_full.jpg

I think the sickest one is the one at votech where I take welding courses.
Its two pieces of (5x8?) 1 inch thick steel plate like they put down on roadways to cover up trenches and stuff like that. All the legs are made of either 3/16x2? angle. This table is freakin insane, and they calculated it to weigh well over a ton. Its not bolted down, but there is no possible way anybody can move this table. You cant shake it at all. Being that it is a welding shop, some crazy projects have been done on it. They have straightened out huge pieces of steel by welding them to the table and using a car jack. No warpage, deformation, etc. There is a 4inch thick slab of steel sitting on the table... no bowing at all. Its crazy.

Hi everyone. I am posting on this thread as a test. I have lurked here for
a long time, but never posted. There are so many great garages, shops
and workbenches on this sight. I thought I would share my workbenches.
They are nothing special. I did not build any of them, but I have modified
a couple of them. Except for the Craftsman bench purchased 20 years
ago ( still with its original MDO/MDF top I might ad) these were all freebies
from working in the retail world, and being at the right place at the right
time. Thanks for all of your great ideas and inspiration.
Looks good kfainf! I really like your chop saw bench. I've been meaning to make a similar one. You can stuff it in a corner and wheel it around, especially if you need to cut long stuff. Nice work.

I have found that I do not do much “bench work.”
To go along with my roll around tool box that brings my tools to the project, I have 2 roll around work tables. 2’ x 4’ x 30” high.
That way I have a work space right where I need it.
And at that height I can sit down to do the work.

Mine is an ikea kitchen counter top with several coats of Parks' superglaze covering some stickers and the wood. The base cabinet is an ikea kitchen cabinet and the other two legs are just 4x4's with countersunk lagbolts through the countertop. A couple braces between the legs and presto:

That is a good point. If I think back I have made do with a 3'x1' workbench. The rest of the area was for tools. I've always thought a light and a heavy bench would be a good idea. The heavy bench would be a bit lower and have a big vise.

I just use cheap harbor freight multi pac quick connects. I only add a connector when I add a air tool, that way I know if something is missing. I like that I can oil my air tools and that it won't run out into a tool box, plus I could never find them in my tool box.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a156/smooth72/garage2.jpgsince i'm at work and photobucket is blocked here, i'm going to assume that the pic of all the air tools hanging from the cabinet is shown here.
elsewhere folks have asked how to attach these to the cabinets, which smooth answered. another way to do this is to drill a series of holes in a piece of angle iron and attach the angle iron to the wall. works if you don't have the cabinet to drill holes in. a friend of mine who is in the plumbing & a/c business did some demo work in a factory a few years ago and one of the things that they removed form the building was the compressed air system: pipes, disconnects, and all. he wound up with a boatload of quick-disconnects and did the angle iron thing. very cool way to store tools. he turned his disconnects upwards instead of hanging them.
advangage of hanging:
oiling the tools easily
advantage of storing upright:
no dust (grinding dust; flying shavings; etc.) falling into the tool air inlet
you won't drop your tool even if you fail to snap it into the quick disconnect correctly
issues of equal advantage:
very cool looking
everything's in site and you don't have to hunt for tools
all tools are conveniently located and in one place

There are some very good looking garages here. I'm still debating whether to have tools out hanging or all put away. I do like the uncluttered look but having some common wrenches and sockets out is more practical.

itb76,
The cabinets were bought from a kitchen cabinet wholesale place in Edmonton, there must be one close to you. The workbench is 3 layers of 3/4" plywood with a 16ga stainless steel countertop mounted on it. The countertop was formed in 2 12' pieces, there is a seam but it hasn't caused me any problems yet.

Hi Guys, first post here. I have been reading for a while and followed the workbench post in Nov-Dec while I was working on my own creation. I wondered if the thread would expire before I got my bench finished and thankfully it did not. So, if I can manage to post some pictures from my 'dial-up' connection, here is the steel bench I built.
My bench is from 1.75 sq tubing. Drawers are 0.5 plywood. Drawer slides are ball bearing. Surface is 0.75 and 0.25 plywood. Drawer fronts are a 0.25 plastic laminate with polished aluminium surface. Bench in on wheels but also has four levelling bolts.
Still to be added is a dirt vacuum pick-up underneath which will be plumbed into my dust collector system.

First off is the main alter of construction, nothing special, fairly solid but not bolted down. The two main features are the 2 inch lips down the long sides, good for clamping and so forth. The other feature may be useful for some-one with limited space. I have welded a heavy wall piece of tube to one end and I have fitted some of my tools with a piece the fits inside and locks into position via the bolts. The possibilities are endless, tools, mandrells, even a shot bag stand.
The other bench, the smaller one on wheels, I couldn't live with out. I can take it right to where it's needed, carby and dizzy rebuilds to welding and shaping this poor thing has seen it all in it's short life. Thanks to Adam - fellow metal butcher - for the idea.

This is nearly a bench so I guess it counts. It started as an old card file cabinet, that I used as a regular tool box for years. I finally bought a proper toolbox and roll-cab a few years ago and this now houses my lathe and mill tools. I made the top section recently to make the often used tools more accessible.

Here is my tiny workbench. It's not much of a workbench but more like a desk that holds my laptop when I am in my one-car garage detailing. The laptop provides the tunes while I work. It also holds the detailing products. One of my friends who is a custom home builder built this for me in return for some interior dress up pieces I was selling. I drew the plans and he built it. The other main reason for this "desk" was to get the fridge off the floor because of the 8" baseboard the runs around the garage. It made the fridge stick out too much, taking up valuable floor space. The best part of the desk is the plexiglass that is set into the top so that I can put pics or whatever under the glass to dress it up.

I'm jealous of the room some of you guys have. I'm shoe-horned into a 21x22 box built back in 1925.
So I've got to be creative.
My main work bench is made out of a second-hand solid-core door. To the left of it is shelving made out of some hollow-core doors. I mounted them at the same height as the work bench so I could use the shelving to extend the work surface.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads14/Bench1227395135.jpg
I also wanted a work surface at desk height (as opposed to counter height, or whatever the term is for standing benches). So I modified an old wrought-iron shelf frame and made a table I could use as a light duty work surface and also a drafting table.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads12/Artistic1205200260.jpg
It folds up or down, depending on what I'm using it for.
I recently added a small welding table, which displaced my freestanding drill press. Here it is, buried under some saws. It's at the same height as the main workbench. You can see I also raised the table saw up to be at the same 37" height.
http://i699.photobucket.com/albums/vv360/Jack_Olsen/SmallTable.jpg
Here's the drill press moved to the original work bench:
http://i699.photobucket.com/albums/vv360/Jack_Olsen/Drill_Press.jpg
The vise has been moved out in front of the bench. I mounted dual-hitch trailer receivers underneath on either side of the work bench. Now my vise, anvil and grinder can move to wherever I need them.
I added a second bench for wood projects, and I made it fold down from the wall so it wouldn't eat up floor space when I wasn't using it.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads14/Fold+Down1227395492.jpg
I liked that so much that this weekend I added another fold-down table -- this one for welding. It disappears against the wall like the old one:
http://i699.photobucket.com/albums/vv360/Jack_Olsen/Folded_Up.jpg
I added a third hitch dual-receiver into the wall next to it. It's braced to the studs with 2"x2"x1/4" steel angle stock.
The new table doesn't use the same type of base as the wood-working table, since it needed to be even stronger. Both of them could easily handle 1000 pounds, though. I realized I could store a lot of my c-clamps and vise grip clamps behind it, so they're out of sight when they're not in use.
http://i699.photobucket.com/albums/vv360/Jack_Olsen/Folded-Down.jpg
That's five benches inside of one two-car garage.

Photo op. I figure if I'm going to take a picture and preserve what I did, it ought to at least be clean.
Plus, with a place this small, you really need to go through it when you're done with a job -- blow out the dust and get it cleaned up -- or it's going to end up being too messy to be useable.
But during a project (like building this table), it gets very messy:

Here's my weld table/work bench. I figure the top alone is 2200 pounds. That does not include the framework under the table. Needless to say it does not move.....period!! It takes all my fork lift has to pick this up. I'm guessing it is around 3200 - 3500 pounds, maybe more. Just finished cleaning up the top with my new (to me) compressor and painting it all up. Last item is to drill the last hole to mount the vise.

I would be afraid that table would cause my slab to sink a few feet... where the hell did you find that and why is it so over built ? (I love over built tools)

I love it. It's got the look of a table that will still be in use 10,000 years from now.
Anything that's worth building is worth overbuilding. ;)

Ya think you could drill though that with a hand drill?? You might have to mount a pedestal drill and run it with oil for a while! ;) What kind of work/projects do you do?

It was surplused where I work. I think that's the PC way to put it. I'm lucky enough to be able to load it with a fork lift at work, have a GMC C5500 flatbed to haul it on, and a fork lift at home to unload it. I have been watching this table for a number of years. Lets just say we weld really HEAVY stuff at work.

I have a friend that has a mag drill I'll borrow. I welded for a living up until a couple of years ago. Still work at the same place just work in a different job. When I was offered the opportunity to have the table I took them up on it. This will be a weld table/ work bench/ riding mower bench......you name it. Actually it is being used to hold a high chair we got from my grand mother after she died and we are refinishing it for our grand daughter.__________________

this is my woodworking table I built 10 years ago. it is a simple design but very sturdy has a tail vice, face vice and a wonder dog vice plus all the holes drilled for the bench dogs. it has been very handy for wood working and for about the last 5 years was the only work bench I had. I now have another mobile bench I built that is completely covered with engine parts and tomorrow I am starting on my new multipurpose bench and cabinets. wish me luck.

That's off the chain. Tim the tool man Taylor would be proud. I wonder if Rosie O'Donnell is aware you stole her bed.
