Thought I would go ahead and finish out pictures of the bottom of this craftsman box. If you like to treasure hunt old tools from pictures, you should be entertained...

I've been slowly working through the squares with evaporust and or electrolyte cleaning. The sockets, why bother, once the rust is gone, it is still pitted chrome, and you can see it, it's just a different color. Of all the tools in the collection, these are the only ones that are rusted. They have been stored in a basement since before I was born. The only thing that is different in all of the drawers is the liner. Here is a picture of the material that was lining the drawers of the rusty tools. Not sure what it is, but I can definitely say that it is no good for a drawer liner as you can see. If anybody knows what this material is used for, please, speak up!

You have one chain wrench that looks very familiar to me...

This is true. Looking at the one you posted, it seems that even they are made differently looking at the end with the teeth where the chain hooks on.

Why is it when a tool is clean and well kept that every one assumes it is not used? I get this so much, You don't have to have a greasy mound of tools to say they get "used".

Thanks for taking the time to list them all...a very nice and impressive collection! I had thought you had some duplicate sets...you can never have too many sockets! (ok, maybe 3 sets of 1/4" is excessive :))
How do you like those Blue Point turbo sockets?
What is a "1/8" snap-on set"? I assume you meant 3/8?
Oh, the super short Snap On sockets...do you use them much? Do they fit on regular ratchets? Do you have the low profile ratchet, too? Does it accept regular sockets?
Oh and the comment about not using my tools. F@#$ off and stop being jealous.

The snap-on 1/8" set really is 1/8" drive not 3/8"". These are the smallest sockets i own, Down to 3/32". The turbo sockets really rock. The only bad thing id they are only good for 3-4 extractions then they get dull, Thank God they are warranted through snap-on.

[QUOTE=nexum1919;530354]This is actually one of my very first posts here, I'm an apprentice tech, 2nd and last year in school, studying Auto Technology.
NEXUM; Nice tools and very organized. Like your use of the clear plastic plano type boxes. Great for small parts/tools. Keeps everything organized, saves time, keeps small things from getting lost. Good luck on your schooling.
t100; you too, great organization and nice collection. How long you been collecting these tools?
Wadd1 I may have to cut a hole in my ceiling for clearance if I keep adding sections, too.

No There in a Deep drawer and take up alot of space, but there organized. They were made by ernst, They now have a low profile set for shallow drawers.

They hold up great, much better than i thought they would. Have had 0problems, I open most every drawer at least 50 times a day and all i can say is this is one tuff box. A sheet of 1/8 stainless got dropped the other day and hit the box, it bearly even scratched it. Great box and a super price. I have a Snap-On 72" KRL box at home and this US General box is everybit as good. The only bad thing i can say is that i have not changed all the locks so that i can use just one key, so right now i have 5 keys to keep up with, which is kinda a pain but hell for under 2K for what i got sittin there i'll deal with all the keys.

I don't use mine professionally, but I have the same issue with the locks. I went to 2 different locksmith to get new cylinders, or something that would work with the "engagement mechanisms". No dice. I took all of my cylinders apart, measured the little keys inside the locks and tried finding a common pattern to be "keyed alike". No go. Couldn't find any online that had the right size square, etc.

Those are Wright wrenches I got off of Richard (TR TOOL SUPPLY). Sadly they are metric and I hardly ever use them. I have a space cleared in my SAE drawer for a new set. The elbow in the 3/4 is for 2 reasons. The 1/2" couplers take some force to connect, and I can get a good "grip" on the line with greasy hands (I'm not the biggest diesel mechanic at 5'9"/165lb), and I didn't have a straight coupler. So it worked out well for me.

That's a good idea. I am 5'10"/175-180, so I know what you mean. I get a lot of guff from some of the others about my strength limitations. I usually don't mind but sometimes it's embarrassing when it takes 2 or 3 times to get the damn air line on when a customer is standing there.:lol_hitti

Those big couplers can be a pain.Perhaps bleed the air out of the line? Our company has it as part of our standard work practice for safety.Shut off the line and open the water bleed at the bottom of the feed or just unplug the hose from the wall, plug the tool in and plug the line back in.

Look into Oetiker swing couplers, the bleed off the pressure as you disconnect them and you don't have to fight the pressure to get them to uncouple.

I do this when hooking the hose itself up or disconnecting it from the line on the wall. Most of the time I can get the air line on the tool ok. I actually have a harder time with all my "regular" sized tools. We use the Milton T-style (maybe P?) couplers with 1/2" air hoses on the reals around the shop. It can make it hard to switch tools with all that air behind it. Most guys in the shop have a 3/8", 6' whip hose which makes it easier to change. I just haven't gotten around to getting one yet.

You think those are bad try the 1/4 locking connectors. I worked with guys who are 6' 4" 300lbs and had been mining for 25+years who couldn't always break them loose. When the mine finally went with 1/2" quick connectors I thought I had died and gone to heaven.

Here's mine: Harbor Freight 72"x29"x46". Very heavy duty just like Matco. 880 pounds (empty), 20 drawers (ball bearing), red powder coat, sring casters. And it only cost $1350.00 total with tax (20% off the $1599.00 list price).

I find it kinda funny that you already stuck a craftsman badge on the front. Nice looking box for the cash for sure. How deep are the actual drawers? Got any pics of that big top drawer open? I'm curious if its double or single slides.

Maybe after using a few times the cover fell off... gear come off, so I had pull my old trusty SK.....
Getting that thing warrentied was a bitch, had my reciept, only took the bad one(part of set). They tell me, come with whole set.. and they would replace, I told the moron at the Autozone... If the only that one was bad, why replace all of them. so the then the manger stepped in and pulled one of shelf, that why I hate the brand!!,
Try Craftsman pro/ or KD ones from Oreilly's(flex) ... or the ratchet from Advance Auto parts get the Gearwrench 60th tooth ratchets, they are nice, look like matco...
I would recommend the ratchets with a red dot;
The Craftsman, it is online/ only,
The KD can be found at Oreilly's Autoparts.... for around 31 bucks

I stated in another thread that I grew up on Craftsman tools (my dad had them and passed them down to me) now I have a huge collection of them. I just had to get the "US General" emblem off and put a Craftsman one on. Here's a pic of the top drawer with all the Craftsman tools in it. It does have only one ball bearing slide but the slide twice the size of the slides on the other drawers and rated to 264 lbs.

Good looking collection of C-man stuff there!
I like how you did your socket rails with the pieces of alum barstock. I've been tempted to do as such but just can't break myself of the habit of grabbing an entire rail of sockets out of the drawer while I'm working on something.

Ya, i know the duralast are not that great. But...i kinda work at autozone...yes..i know...but its a job. When someone comes in with a tool warranty, i dont hassle them...just pull one off the shelf and tell them to have a nice day after the computer work stuff. I agree there are a BUNCH of morons at autozone though. Just like any other parts house. Of course i bought that ratchet/socket set and the other ratchets becouse i get a discount. When i bought the sockets we had a 30% discount for like a week in the summer. I bought them mainly to keep in my truck, but they ended up in my box. Once i get money, they will go back in their case, and be put in my truck to replace the walmart tool set in there, and i will get some nicer tools. But for the time being they work for me. At my other job, i use a co-workers Snap-on tools, or my boss's old school tools. As workin at the shop part time, i dont need to keep my own box there. But someday id like to have a huge box full of nice tools. Im only 22.

I too like those socket holders. Real clean. I actually spent $70 at Sears on Hanson socket holders already or I'd do mine that way.

i made a similar socket tray using socket strips and aluminum plate, riveted together, it saves way way more space then the fancy Hansen trays and costs 1/3 of them.

Keep the faith. I started with a handful of Craftsman tools in high school. Worked on cars, motorcycles, bicycles, anything with nuts and bolts. Kept my tools in a cardboard box. After 30 yrs. my collection has grown as will yours.
I am new to posting on this site and a bit of a computer MORON. I will post some pictures of my stuff as soon as I can figure out how to get them over here.
You will know you have to many tools when your WIFE bitches about not having enought room in HER Snap on box. Keep collecting.

Ya, in high school i had to use what my dad had in that box....which was just that old wrench set, and those 1/2" drive sockets. The rest ive put together over the summer. Ive used them quite a few times and havent had any issues. But then again, as long as you dont abuse stuff they generally last along time. But sometime..u just have to abuse them to get the job done haha. The first thing on the list is a bigger box, then id like to buy a craftsman socket set, and then...ya..u know how it goes. I have no need to worry about a Wife...i havent even had a gf in years haha.
I think there should be a rule that no one can say anyone else's tools "suck." That's harsh.
Tooltrader, the pic of the tools in that drawer are making me even more jealous...everything looks shiny and hyper-organized. Very nice.

Ya, its not nice. I know some very respected mechanics that have Duralast tools in there Snap-on boxes. Also some very good mechanics that have tools that lots of you would say suck. But they work just fine for them. A guy i work with has alot of snap on stuff, hes had his ratchets rebuilt, stuff replaced on warrenty and such. My boss has a ratchet that says John Deere, and evercraft sockets, and some other random ones. The john deere stuff hes had for a very long time, ive only broke one of his sockets, and i dont think ive seen him break much. Hes been a head mechanic at a few shops before opening up his own, using the same tools. He dont have a fancy box, he works out of a tool tray with basic tools, and does any job that comes his way. While the other guy has a 40" snap on combo full of tools, that always needs somthing else to do somthing.
This isnt what I was thinking when I seen this post... I'm not impressed. hate me. :FIREdevil

Hey everyone does the best with what they have... When I started out as a lube tech at a VW dealer I was bringing tools from home everyday (mostly C-man) a used Snappy impact and a tire gauge. Someone made fun of me once and the service manager told me he called the guy into his office and made him feel bad because I was dragging it back and forth everyday and not complaining and that I was saving all my money to buy a starter box. The guy came out and said he was sorry. Now I have about 15-16K just in tool boxes and then another 30K in tools. That took me 12 years of collecting them all and I'm still not done. It will come in time if you're serious about it. Duralast will get the job done until you can get better tools.
But, if Duralast keeps doing the job, what does a "better" tool even mean? :headscrat

He did and I paid 1,500 for it instead 10 grands! Problem is my krl1003 was about 17 years old. I don't care about age but I do care of quality!

Come on Krusty. You are reasonable enough to know that even if someone owns a set of non tool-truck tools, they can have pride of ownership. If someone has a collection of Duralast (which look nice, btw) and they never fail them, then there would be no reason not to be proud.

Totally agree with this statement . Am a pro mechanic here in the uk and I choose to go down the route of snap-on , now theirs nine mechanics in our workshop two of which buy snap on mainly and tbh the ones who dont have snap have a much nicer car than me because they have went down the sealey / halford pro range . Yeah thats one of the things we kind of regretted when my aunt sold the farm is that the tools went cheap enough we should of kept them rather than selling in the auction.
For my dads side the discussion is sometime in the next 30 years who ends up with the guns and who ends up with the tools.

My first "real tool box" which was a christmas gift from my old man and wife when I first moved into my house. A Craftsman RollerBearing 11 drawer set that's served me very well over the last 5 years. My Craftsman EasyGlide 4 drawer work bench with galvanized work surface. My Ranger Products 13 drawer roller bottom box which I won from Ranger/BendPak in a contest here on GJ which has my Craftsman 6 drawer side box hangin from it. When I started working on cars, I had some "cheap' tools and some "expensive" ones. Since then I've ended up buying ones that work and do what I want it to do, whatever the brand.

Tools are tools. Some are better than others. Some people take price into consideration. If the price is right by me and it's made in USA then I'm buying regardless of brand.

Nice box. I actually like the debadged version.
I have a mb1700 and it looks just like that. Yours may be an earlier one because I have spring loaded caster and I don't see the springs on the casters in the pic. I am in the process of getting all my slides replaced, the detents are gone and if you move the box, all the drawers open up.

Thanks guys....it came along at the right time.
My drawers open up also and I need the clips that keep the drawers from falling out. Also, the handle is mounted in the middle of the drawer where your badge is so you are probably correct about it being an earlier model.

Hey Bryon, where and how are you getting the slides? Is MAC replacing them for free? I need one or 2 for mine and I figured if you have BKM, lets rock and roll. :)
Here's mine, a KRL 1001 that I bought used. I did order some new drawers, swapped out some of the 4" deep for some 2" for more layout space. As you can see by the collection on top, I could use the 1201 also, just can't bring myself to pay new prices..:lol_hitti

I don't know. My box was handed down to me from my dad when he retired. I remember him buying it in the early 90's. I think it cost $3500 for the whole set up back then.

Shocker,
Mac is replacing them. I basically got with my dealer and ordered two sets of slides where the ball bearings were falling out. After I did this, it was a chain reaction. I forgot what it was like when the box opened and closed correctly. Now, you have to pull to get the draw to open, rather then just a finger.

I don't have any detailed pics of the drawer contents currently. Mostly Snap-On, Mac, Matco, Cornwell and a few Craftsman and Proto. The toolbox consists of the average hand and air tools plus a lot of fabrication tools such as bead rollers, dimple dies, diagnostic scope, OTC Genysis Scanner, meters, vacuum guages, torque wrenches, most sockets and wrenches up to 2" including 3/4" drive sockets. Many specialty tools for auto, HD and motorcycles.
I pretty much work on anything with an engine from lawnmower, tillers, snowblowers, motorcycles, ATVs, snowmobiles, automotive and motorhomes/coaches. I operate a small repair/custom fab/Hi-Po shop along with my wife and son. Mike.

I've been waiting to post up my tool box till I actually went through the whole thread. I finished it up last night, so I took pictures this a.m.
It's a Craftsman box. The bottom box was originally my stepdads, mom bought it for him for christmas one year. She wanted to know what he wanted for Christmas, and he had just told me weeks eariler about the box he'd like to get for work.
At the time he was an electrian at GE ( now retired) and they push their tool carts around the shop when they work on things. The box to the right of mine is the box he was using, he figured he could put everything in the bottom box he gave me and leave him with a work top. In adddition, he started to build a cart for the bottom box to fit in.
When he gave it to me, I sold my other Craftsman roll away, intermediate and top box and bought the top box shown. I later added the side box, accidently order one with quiet glides instead of the ball bearing slides.

Having recently acquired a new box, I'm slowly moving things over to it and using my existing boxes for additional storage/specialty tools. I'm trying to keep the mainline stuff - ratchets, sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers, etc. in the main box while things like punches, files, vise-grips will be in the old Husky/MAC box.
As much as I love BIG tools, I don't use my 3/4" and 1" drive stuff hardly ever, so I came to the conclusion that it couldn't occupy prime real estate. I moved all the 3/4" stuff over to the biggest drawer in my Cornwell cart this weekend:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v58/Zrexxer/Tools/Drawers001-800.jpg
The Cornwell also holds other seldom used specialty stuff, like body tools:

And others just into the box:

Same with the Metrics:

This is just the screwdrivers with tray/boxes... there are about another 50 or so I'm trying to organize in another drawer:

It's coming along slowly. This is the most organized I've ever been in my life. This is how my wrenches used to be "organized" for instance :p

Joe - What model is it? That is one nice, really nice box. Love the love and 8" casters
I'd have to look, I've had it several years and don't remember the model number. With those castors, it rolls like a dream, even when loaded heavily.

well, i have been on the lookout for the "perfect" box for about a year now (and saving to afford said perfect box) to store my ever growing arsenal of vintage tools - I have several old handyman and canterleaver boxes which are overflowing and just not cutting it.
Today i purchased that box

vintage britool box sitting on a caster'd dolly - this should be perfect for rolling around and under the projects
anyone able to date the box?

Just refinished my dads old toolbox. It is one like "Lookin4'67Galaxieconv" redid. Mine is stamped 1967 on both boxes. My stepdad thought the thing was red.... nope, that was just the rust!

It was a fun project. The rust was horrible though... heavily pitted on the bottom part. I got it as clean as I could and used some hammered finish grey Rustoleum to both hide the pits and protect it from further corrosion.
I added the upper box handles since the photos. I still need to sort out the locks... the keys might still be around. The casters will come in the future and I plan on using spray truck bed liner to line the drawers.

The Cornwell also holds other seldom used specialty stuff, like body tools:

Looks really good! So you used the hammered grey Rustoleum for the whole thing? What was the paint you used for the red? Did you use aluminum paint for the drawer trim pieces?
Never seen someone use spray bed truck liner for the drawers. If you end up doing that, definitely post pics.

Yea, I actually had to get Lowes to special order it. I tried 10 different paint stores and NOBODY carried the hammered grey... they had plenty of green, gold, bronze, and silver, but no grey! Who would have thought it wasn't a popular color? :headscrat For the drawers, I used the "Rustoleum Professional" in "safety red". For the aluminum drawer pulls- I just refreshed them with a wire brush, then masked them off with blue tape before the respray. Worked better than I thought it would. On the top box pulls (not pictured but installed), I used that can of paint sitting on the shelf. It's a chrome colored paint I picked up at Sherwin Williams while I was shopping for the grey Rustoleum. That stuff worked out very well.... spray was smooooooooth as silk. I was a dummy and scratched one of the pulls while putting the last screw in, but I just left it. I would have liked to have the white face on the logo, but I'm a horrible painter. I hit them with some 2000 grit paper and called it a day.
I'll definately post pics up when I get the bed liner in. I just need some spare time and coin.

Some of the red colors I have found that are decent matches for older boxes and look pretty good are Krylon Banner Red, Sears Fresh and Easy RED FE505 and old cans of Imperail Bright Red 13.

So here is my little contribution to the thread. This is my first post so go easy on me. Two Lista shallow depth, counter height cabinets w/2" thk. X 10' lg. maple butcher block top. Just got the top finished today. It is covered with 1/8" thk. Kleer Kote. Same kinda stuff used on bar tops. :bounce: It looks like a sheet of glass on top. And I had to make it mine so I branded it.
