This is my first post. I have been following this thread for a while and decided to buy an old box. I ended up buying two boxes and sold off one. I now have a grand total of $80 into this one. I will clean it all up and do some repairs to it. It will sit beside my vintage MAC box of the same size.

hey, Jeff here.
this is just one of my boxes, between the Kennedy/ Blackhawk boxes there's 2,000$ in just the boxes. not counting the 13k plus of machinist/mechanic tools in it. its as tall as I am, with my Crissman Hotrods & Customs logo across the top of the lid, with the Ford v8 logo as the center of it

Whats in the KRA 26" box in the workbench? I've been debating building a bench "around" my old Kobalt bottom box and using it to store/organize stuff like my drill bits, tap/die stuff, soldering stuff, etc.. the type of stuff you'd probably do on the bench or chunk into the vice to work on. Just wondering how that was working out for you.
PS.. Nice collection in the Classic 78! Love that assortment of hard handled stuff :)

I'm using the KRA 26" for basically what you describe. The top drawer has knives, scissors, pens, pencils, ruler, etc. The second drawer has a couple of router jigs and such. Third drawer has drill bits and jig saw blades. Fourth drawer is storage for nuts, bolts, screws, etc. Fifth drawer is electrical - solder iron, connectors, etc. Sixth drawer has clamps. Bottom drawer has my jig saw.
Thanks on the classic 78. I really like having the bigger bottom and work surface instead of the stacked unit I previously had. I've acquired the hard handles and almost all my tools via the internet (here, ebay, craigslist, other forums) which has saved me a considerable amount of money. Hopefully I can continue to find stuff to fill it up!

I made it in one sitting. I know its growing, and I'll be back with my own pics. But just some observations.
1. "You suck" is definitely deserved a whole lot more than it has been used.
2. You win. You know who you are. Heck, I won't live long enough to catch up with some of you, money not with standing.
3. Some are flush with tools AND organized. That is just sick.
4. Some o' dem boxes would throw me into a panic attack just trying to figure out which tool to use and where it is!
5. I have acquired, bought, sold, given away and had stolen fewer that 10% of the tools in even some of the modest posts here in the last 50 years.
6. I remember swaping a 283 for a 396 in my '67 El Camino in the drive of base housing, Jacksonville, Fl using the tools in a hand carried, top tray, cantilevered tool box. Back in the day, you know?

JMHO,
Back in the day of engine bays you could sit in to change your spark plugs, you could easily do 85% or greater of your work, with just a portable toolbox.
It was the combination of metric tools, and shrinking engine bays that caused the toolboxes to have to grow.
How much space could I have back, if I didn't need multiple boxes?:lol_hitti

I've finally got my sockets, ratchets, and extensions moved into my new box, so here's an updated picture of that now.
And I agree with Onewaydave, I don't need all these tools. A lot of it is just convenience, or just compulsive "accumulating."
As an example, when I worked for a Deere dealership many years ago, the business was going broke on a rocket sled. The owner owed money to everyone, and our paychecks started to bounce occasionally. It was obvious he was going to be out of business soon. Those of us in the shop were afraid that the IRS would show up one day and padlock the doors, and our tools would be locked up for God knows how long. So I came in one weekend with a friend and loaded up my boxes and took them home.
I then packed a 16 inch Craftsman hand box with just the essentials, and took it to work with me Monday morning. I earned my living out of that little box for a couple more months until they declared bankruptcy. Granted, I wasn't doing work on high-tech modern electronically controlled engines, but for most stuff, it can be done.

Finding quality boxes to fit into our trucks is becoming challenging. In my last truck, I installed a new Mac Economizer. It was junk. I ended up giving it away. It was in such bad shape after bouncing around for 6 years. The back panel of the roll around literally fell off. They are about the equivalent of a China toolbox, but it was the only name brand box I could find to fit well at the time. I guess they named it Economizer for a reason.

Finally decided to post my box here; it was quite sparse prior to my joining the forum.
HF roll cab, painted the trim black.
Side box is an old Powerkraft given to me by dad. The Craftsman box above it was my first box.
Mostly metric stuff, although I have been buying some standard since I have been working on a friends '62 Lincoln.
A big thanks to anyone I have purchased from; you helped build a tool collection I thought would never happen. Keen eyes will spot the tools I purchased in their new home. :)

Where do you work? I don't see any impact sockets, TORX sockets and flex head ratchets.
What do you more prefer 3/8" or 1/2"?
wolpi
12-05-2009, 06:08 PM
I have some impact sockets, but they're not in that toolbox. i don't use them very often and never crashed one of my hazet sockets.
The torx sockets are on the first picture in the middle above the deep 1/2" sockets. i have another box with smaller torx sockets but the sizes in the box are the one i just use.
I used until i had my f80 ratchet to work with 1/2" ratchets. now i prefer 3/8"...but it also depends of the work which has to be done
Flex head ratchets...good question...i never needed one.
I work on engines/cars...bmw m3 (6 zylinder)
The snap on tools here in germany are extreme expensive. The ratchets were bought in usa. the 3 - 3/8 wooble extension from snap on cost here in germany ~125€ (180$). the set with the 6 extensions about 250€ (375$)
Not really cheap :( but i try to change my tools step by step to snap on...i try

Forgotten to say "welcome to garage journal"
Yes Snap-on is horrible expensive here (germany) and service...:spit:
Try your luck with ebay.co.uk a lot of uk guys selling snap-on stuff for a cheap buck. No custom fees and low shipping costs.
In 3/8 I like this extra large Snap-on ratchet (~33cm).
Worked on BMW's X series (and others) a flex head is a must have:drool:Try it.
I used onetimes a 18mm Hazet socket (non impact) with a impact wrench...it exploded and hit my face...have a nice scare from hazet now...:lol_hitti
Since that I use only impact socket with my impact wrench.

Hmm...for hard stuff i always use a breaker bar or an extension. maybe thats the reason why i never crashed a socket. even the no name tools of my father didn't crash. (ok, i killed one of his ratchets...but don't tell him) :bounce::wtf:

Well, I'm originally from NYC, so I am a NJ transplant.
I love NJ and see lot's of things different from most. Nj'ers complain about car insurance, my cost dropped 50% (and my coverage amounts doubled) when I moved here. The property taxes are a trade off from the local and city tax I paid before.
They State needs to get the rear in gear but I love being here. I am in NY at least 3-4 times a week and that's enough. You couldn't give me a McMansion house free to live in NY again. At least not the 5 boroughs.

Mine is a Matco Proformance series...about 8 or 9 years old. I've had two (modern) Snap-on KRA boxes and neither could touch this one as far as metal thickness, slide quality, side-to-side motion of drawers, or overall quality.
Inside is a pretty even mix of Mac and Craftsman, with a good amount of Snap-on, Blue Point, and GearWrench and a few Matco, Husky, and Klein tools as well.
I'd like to find the double-bay version of this box with a top chest. I could use more storage, but a 3 bay won't work- I need the floor space, so I'll need to take advantage of a top box. I see the 2 bay bottoms with some frequency on CL and eBay, but not with top chests. I do occasionally see the newer series 4 models with hutches, but (to my eyes and feel) the 4 series isn't up to par with the older Proformance line and the hutch isn't of much use to me.

I'm a hobbyist working on Scooters, my 250cc Vespa and my wife's Honda.
Edit: The top box has space for 39 wrenches (more doubled up) and 200 sockets on pegs with a 26” x 17” bottom compartment

Nice kit.. I love those top boxes like that. I rarely see them for sale around here though. Nice setup!

Mine is a Matco Proformance series...about 8 or 9 years old. I've had two Snap-on KRA boxes and neither could touch this one as far as metal thickness, slide quality, side-to-side motion of drawers, or overall quality.
Anymore shots of your entire work area/shop? That looks like a nice place to work!
I had a black proformance bottom chest awhile back.. it was the 50" with the full width drawers (rather than a 2 bay version) and it was a solidly built box. I needed more room though and got a deal on a larger box so away it went.

Finally got around to taking some picture of my box. Im still in tech school now, and it amazes me how many kids from my classes have no tools and haven't even thought about buying them. Tools are a mix...all snap on sockets, gearwrench, cornwell, matco wrenches...

Thanks. So as not to hijack this toolbox thread, you can see a few more pics of the shop here (click on "Carriage House"):

There have been a few changes since some of those pics were taken, but you'll get the idea. Like everyone else's garage, it is a work in progress. I have plans for an addition.

Home. Turning wrenches is just a hobby for me. You can see the house (circa 1790) if you scroll through the carriage house pics. Those seats are waiting for homes in future restoration projects- Audis from the 1970s and early '80s.

I thought it was time to take some quick updated pics. :)
When my other stuff arrives and i actually get around to tidying the box properly i'll get some better pics.
In all its dented, well-used glory:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/chrismca/DSC00573.jpg
The eagle. With the top up it's just slightly taller than me:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/chrismca/DSC00577.jpg
My glorious Record No. 25. Lives on top the side box until i find it a permanent home:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/chrismca/DSC00576.jpg
Prybars, breaker bars, 3/4" handle, crowbar, tyre levers, SHF80 and the 36" pipe wrench live in the top:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/chrismca/DSC00579.jpg
Some screwdrivers. There are another 52 in the mail:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/chrismca/DSC00578.jpg
On the left: the everything drawer. Flashlights, punches, chisels and misc other stuff. On the right: wrenches, regular, short, long and a few various other ones. Including the 6" pipe wrench:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/chrismca/DSC00580.jpg
Ratchets and sockets. 40-something Snap-on ratchets, and 3 Blue-Point ones. Various sockets and drivers.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/chrismca/DSC00581.jpg
A close-up of the ratchets:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/chrismca/DSC00583.jpg
A close-up of the sockets and drivers. Need more rails:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/chrismca/DSC00582.jpg
Two more misc drawers, oil filter cup wrenches, hex keys, mini screwdrivers and stuff on the left. Impact sockets, spare handles, pens (lots and lots of pens), my other box of random crap and stuff on the right:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/chrismca/DSC00584.jpg
Pliers, yeah, i need more. But for now these serve me fine. I will get more and some racks some time:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/chrismca/DSC00585.jpg
Other wrenches, carb adjusters, speed brace and specialty wrenches:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/chrismca/DSC00587.jpg
Air tools, power tools and torque wrenches live in this drawer:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/chrismca/DSC00588.jpg
Wrenches from 23mm-41mm, some more pipe wrenches, impact hex drivers, VW-Audi suspension bush tool, hex keys, clutch aligner and dogbone alignment wrench:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/chrismca/DSC00589.jpg
Close-up of the dogbone set. I have another adapter on the way. I've never used it, but it's nice and will probably be a lifesaver one day:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/chrismca/DSC00590.jpg
Another misc drawer (hmm.. i have a lot of those..) compression tester, oil pressure tester, compressed air valve holder (for changing valve stem seals without pulling the head), valve spring compressors, screw extractors, Snap-on quick cutter, soldering irons, more wrenches, radio keys and test lights:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/chrismca/DSC00591.jpg
The bottom two drawers are messy so i'll skip them for now and move onto the side box.
More drivers; nut drivers, carb adjusters, hose picks, some brake tools, stubby awl and some one-off stubby/long-shank screwdrivers:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/chrismca/DSC00592.jpg
Aaaaaaaaand another messy misc drawer. Snap-on swivel extensions, various screwdrivers:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/chrismca/DSC00593.jpg
Suspension stuff; coil spring compressors, ball-joint separators, hub puller, brake pad spreader and tie rod adjusters:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/chrismca/DSC00594.jpg
Some more screwdrivers and my rear brake wind-back set. It's not very interesting, i'll get pics insides another time:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/chrismca/DSC00595.jpg
Another misc drawer; scrapers, viscous fan clutch wrenches/pulley holders, prybars, files, cam pulley holder, hose clamp pliers (they suck.), drum brake spring puller (the T-handle hook), and my homemade pump pulley holder. (I made it from a Boa thingy and a ribbed serp belt):
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/chrismca/DSC00597.jpg
And lastly the supplies drawer; various greases, fluids, vaseline (oh yeah..) and my Wurth brake cleaner pump spray:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/chrismca/DSC00598.jpg
That's all for now! :)

Question - I struggle too with storing torx, hex and other odd drivers on rails.... have you seen any other good ways to store them? I ask since the bigger and long ones force you to lay them flat in the box instead of standing them up.

My meager 26" Craftsman stack, bottom two are 18" deep, top is a 16". Yep, it's rattlecanned flat black...looked awesome until I started using it and staining it with oil marks. Oh well, I plan on upgrading to a HF US General 41" chest in the very near future. As you can see the box is somewhat crowded the way I've got it organized, but not quite full yet.

http://pics.boredmder.com/garagejournal/DSC05541.png
Damn, these pics make my box and the work area look a lot dirtier/cluttered than it really is. As you can see, my box has everything from AmPro to SnapOn, mostly Craftsman and some HF 'goodies'.
Top box, top and top drawer.
Extensions, various on top, and tool truck paperwork, hex keys, electrical tape, random small stuff in drawer:
http://pics.boredmder.com/garagejournal/DSC05538.png
Top box, second drawer.
My meager hammer collection, looking to pick up a dead blow ball peen soon:
http://pics.boredmder.com/garagejournal/DSC05537.png
Top box, third drawer.
Chemicals and such, if kept in my cart they all tend to disappear rather quickly. Should be able to tell where I work from this pic alone:
http://pics.boredmder.com/garagejournal/DSC05536.png
Top box, fourth drawer.
Extra sockets, box on left has my less used wrenches (flare nut, thin, tiny combo wrenches, etc), box on upper right is a HF tie rod adjustment set, and of course my multimeter, some RTV, flashlights, and smaller air tools:
http://pics.boredmder.com/garagejournal/DSC05535.png
Top box, bottom drawer.
Personal stuff, where all of my stuff goes every morning:
http://pics.boredmder.com/garagejournal/DSC05534.png
Middle box, top drawer
Ratchet wrenches, drum/rotor removal bolts at upper left:
http://pics.boredmder.com/garagejournal/DSC05533.png
Middle box, middle drawer.
SAE and metric combo wrenches, along with some extra socket rails:
http://pics.boredmder.com/garagejournal/DSC05532.png
Middle box, bottom drawer.
Metric sockets, new Genius 3/8" impact socket set (going in a tray soon, along with the 12 points in the bottom right hand corner), HF/SO impact swivels, all of my hex/torx/screwdriver sockets, adapters, and of course all of my ratchets:
http://pics.boredmder.com/garagejournal/DSC05531.png
Bottom box, top drawer.
All of my SAE stuff, the 12 points are going in another tray as well, next up is some impact sockets. I rarely use my standard tools, so that's not a big priority right now:
http://pics.boredmder.com/garagejournal/DSC05530.png
Bottom box, second drawer.
Pliers, adjustable wrenches, pipe wrench, in an extremely disorganized, cluttered mess:
http://pics.boredmder.com/garagejournal/DSC05529.png
Bottom box, third drawer.
Another disorganized mess of screwdrivers and punches/chisels:
http://pics.boredmder.com/garagejournal/DSC05528.png
Bottom box, fourth drawer.
Various nut drivers, pry bars, picks, disconnects, and brake equipment. Top box is a Sunex torque stick set, middle is a HF impact driver, and bottom is a HF pick set:
http://pics.boredmder.com/garagejournal/DSC05527.png
Bottom box, fifth drawer.
HF wheel bearing set (which, by the way, kicks ass. Hasn't failed me yet), extended TDC indicator, and a strap wrench:
http://pics.boredmder.com/garagejournal/DSC05526.png
Bottom box, bottom drawer.
Catch-all (junk) drawer, and soda storage:
http://pics.boredmder.com/garagejournal/DSC05525.png
My cart, little Torin from Northern Tool. Tiny little thing, but has slide tops (which are far more useful than a flip top, IMO), and can navigate through most areas the bigger carts can't:
http://pics.boredmder.com/garagejournal/DSC05524.png
I try not to use it for storing tools, though my cordless and pneumatic impacts as well as torque wrench, hubcap hammer, and clipboard live in the top. Also some other stuff that won't fit in my box goes in here.
Top drawer.
My 25" HF breaker bar (which I've tried to break, and can't seem to) which doesn't fit in any of my Craftsman drawers as they are, a few screwdrivers and a prybar, and some oil change stuff:
http://pics.boredmder.com/garagejournal/DSC05540.png
Bottom drawer.
HF compression tester set (also works great), hood/trunk/hatch shock holder, and some extra snackage:
http://pics.boredmder.com/garagejournal/DSC05539.png
And some other tool shots for good measure...
My pride and joy:
http://pics.boredmder.com/garagejournal/DSC05542.png
Ratchet shots:
My favorite here? Obviously the FH80, but those HF Pittsburg composite ratchets are also very nice, and 72 tooth:

Thanks, Greg. It's now completely paid off, with zero outstanding. (In fact, Snap-on owe me £11!) I'm glad it's all mine and all paid for, and i'm certainly proud of it. It might be largely second-hand, but it's all mine!
As for the long drivers, without a really deep drawer i haven't found a better way to store them, i'm going to make trays to lay them in.

I do have a hardcore screwdriver addiction. I don't know what it is about them, i just can't get enough. Not just Snap-on hard handles, but screwdrivers in general. I've got my eye on about 5 euro sets i really want to buy; Witte, Wera, Wiha, etc.

i wish i could, this is the only pic i can find of the set up. we took pics of all the drawer contents, (for the shops insurance) somewhere in the last 12 years after leaving that job , moving 1200 miles, getting a new job and moving 3 more times in the area, i cant find 1/2 of what i thought i had. :lol_hitti

[QUOTE=pmohr;678529]My meager 26" Craftsman stack, bottom two are 18" deep, top is a 16". Yep, it's rattlecanned flat black...looked awesome until I started using it and staining it with oil marks. Oh well, I plan on upgrading to a HF US General 41" chest in the very near future. As you can see the box is somewhat crowded the way I've got it organized, but not quite full yet.

i started out with a basic set of SK tools wrenches to 1 1/4 1/2, 3/8, 1/2 drive sockets up to 1 1/4 and some misc hammers, screwdrivers, and a couple punches and chisels all thrown in a kennedy 10 drawer top/5 drawer bottom combo.
i kept adding tools and when i ran out of room i bought the biggest box i thought i'd ever need, a snapon kr550/555. working at various heavy equipment dealers led to needing different tools, and being "geared up" to do specific jobs, meant some specific tools. and the need for more storage
one dealer i worked almost exclusively on dozers for almost a year and then went into the rebuild room at that dealer. all the same nuts and bolts, but different tools :shocking:
being back working on smaller equipment again, i havent used a wrench over 1 5/8 or a socket bigger than 1 13/16 in 11 years. i have some sockets that i bought 11 years ago while working on JD equipment that have never touched a bolt.
ive been buying tools for 30+ years, i'll probably never stop buying, the older i get the more selective i get... and hopefully smarter :)
my advise is buy what you need to do your job, dont buy the biggest, shiniest box you see on the tool truck. ive known several young mechanics that did, they're now unemployed and have had boxes and tools repo'd.
just my 2cents

Indeed, that's what I've been trying to do. I could've financed a decent size SO box a few months ago, but have been reorganizing my current one to make more room instead. The HF box should hold everything I have and far more, and I can most likely sell this Craftsman stack for more than the $400 I'd pay for the new box.
Generally I'll buy HF or other cheapie stuff, and if I find myself using it often enough, I'll buy 'good' brands. Though my HF impact swivels have done every bit as good as my SO ones, interestingly.
Personally I can never see myself paying truck pricing on a box to hold tools, regardless of how good it is; I could replace the HF box every year for the next 10 years and still be under the price of a SO/Matco box of the same size.
But that's not to say that I don't desire an Epiq triple bay...

i bought some HF metric swivel impacts about a year ago, i needed a 15mm for something and figured why not? ive beat the hell out of those sockets, even had an 18mm on my 3/4 drive gun and havent broke one yet.
i buy craftsman, kobalt or HF tools to keep at my personal shop, and keep my snapon mac and matco tools in my service truck. ive abused my tools for 25 years on heavy equipment, and have rarely broken anything unless is was being severely misused. i used to break snapon 3/4 dr breaker bar heads at least once a month loosening bolts on large hyd cylinders, the 8feet of pipe and 600+ ft/lb of torqe wil do that.
the absolute best was the 5/8 12pt comb wrench i broke
nope didnt break the box end didnt break the open end
i broke the handle part of the wrench:shocking:
i was trying to remove a 12point headed bolt from a crawler trans, after sevral swings with a 10lb sledge the wrench broke. my snapon dealer started to ask what happened, i told him dont ask........he didnt, and handed me a new wrench

i bought them new when they came out for the 90th aniversary, a year or so later i ordered the center section to match. according to my dealer at the time, snappy built and painted the centers, but never assembled them, the top and bottom have friction slides the center has rollers. from what i remember they made 7500 set of them @ $3400 top and bottom, the center box cost me $600 or so back then
the color is cranberry, these were some of the 1st "non red" boxes that snapon made
ive seen several sets of them on CL and ebay over the years, most sold in as new condition for $1000

It's the same as the Kennedy Maintenance Pro series except for a different plastic emblem. It's been a darn good box, better than any I've ever had, including my Snap on KRA that I lost in a fire.

I had to take my "new" used snap on box home because my service manager is a jerk and says that Id have to be "flat-rate" to have a toolbox at work.. MadMark-
The comparison for the two. If I had to pick one that would have no problem handling my drawer opening etc would be the Harbor Freight one. It feels sturdies and durable rather than the Snap ON. That might be because this is a "lower" end of the Snap On Line. (I Dont knnow) but between my two boxes I like the HF one best.

Electric is not bad really. My house has a 600 amp service on it and then I ran it out to my shop where I have three, DPC30 Phase Perfect Phase converters to run my equipment. During the summer months (I am located in Phoenix) it runs around $650.00 but that is with my house, guest house and shop. That table was made Elliott Machine Tools in Australia if you are interested in looking up what they have available.
My SAE stuff is not here.
1. Foam mat dremeled out holds my sockets. A 3/8ths speed handle is missing from the pic.
2. I like my old school wrench.

Thanks I need to go through the SS box's and move the tooling for my machines around and get rid of one of them. Bought several tooling cabinets specifically for the CAT 40 tool holders so I have alot of extra room in those box's.

If you go on craigslist someone on there must be selling their homedepot gift cards/credit for around %80 of the value thats how I got mine for $630 out the door.

While it's really nice that one of our members found one of those that was legit...that is a VERY common scam. You buy a HD card at a discount, and find out it's cancelled before you can use it.

I just stumbled on this forum while researching garage lifts, and boy am I in heaven. I won't be getting much done in the near future as I am glued to the computer.
As to the topic, I recently repainted an old Lista cabinet that was the original baby blue with lots of painting and repainting of lettering/numbers etc. on the drawers.
48870
I couldn't figure out what color I wanted to paint it. It seemed too big for the traditional red. In any case I tried several different combos and finally settled on the two tone one in the pics. I ended up using rattle spray cans:
Frame: Rust-Oleum Hammered - Brown
Drawers: Rust-Oleum Hammered - Dark Bronze
I was concerned about using the rattle cans on the large sides, as I have the spray equipment to do it "right". The problem was I couldn't get those colors or texture in regular cans. In any case, the sides are fine, and the drawers are excellent. I'm glad I never messed with the spray equipment.
48871
The handles were somewhat scratched and not up to the new paint job.
48872
I was going to put in the paper labels with the clear plastic cover strips. The problem was that the ones I had were never used, had been stored in a box, but still had a yellow cast and detracted from the cabinet. I ended up using electricians tape instead, and am very happy with the results. The tape is a little tricky installing. First cut a length a couple inches longer than the handle. Then pull the tape tight, hold it on edge, and with a slight sawing motion, slide the bottom edge into the lower slot. Once you get it fully into the slot, then you can stick the rest to the handle. That will cover a little more than the bottom half of the handle. Now, do the same to the top. It will overlap the bottom piece. I'm guessing that it is better to have the top overlap the bottom. On the first couple of handles, I trimmed the electricians tape overhanging the ends right away. The next day, the tape had shrunk slightly (it was stretched while pulling tight to install). So, I learned to wait a day before trimming.
The hardest part was finding some end caps that I was missing. This is the older style cabinet, and Lista and all of the distributors I called, don't have any more of that style. In any case, I found someone else with a cabinet he was selling that was missing so many end caps, that he sold me the remaining ones.
The best part of this story is what I am using for the drawer liner. I initially purchased some of the standard cheap drawer liner that is soft and foam like. I made due with it, but it was easy to gouge. Then I was finally able to pick up a roll of the ULTIMATE drawer liner from my brother.
48873
So, what makes the ultimate drawer liner? Actually, my brother bought this rubber at an auction years ago from Aerojet corp. This stuff is actually rocket booster liner. It's super expensive, or at least it was for the government. Fortunately, we got it cheap. This rubber was actually ground to an exact thickness. Note in the pic the numbers written on it. Those are all over the rubber and are thickness measurements to show that it meets specs.
48874
That in no way makes it a better tool box liner, but it is interesting. But the density and texture DO make it a perfect liner.

Lista is top notch. Every shop I've worked at uses them almost exclusively. They're filled with tool steel and carbide and the take that abuse. Easy 100 pounds in some of the drawers and they get opened and closed dozens of times a day

seeing a mr big in person is a interesting experience, as they were rolling the box out, i couldnt believe the length of this box...some people like the 70 series verison better then the 10, becuase it is low enough to use as a benchtop.. i use to have a blue krl1023 before mrbig and i loved that box... i got it for 8k off the truck and sold it later to get the mr big... i only got 4000 dollars for the krl1023 and it was only one month old

Yeah I compared a 7023 to a 1023....for me I felt I'd be better off with the extra space. In the back of my mind I don't know that I might not be better off getting the Snappy four bay, but that's gotta be pretty hard to move around and would take up a bit of real estate.
I'm trying to get a little more info on the new EPIQ line too, but there isn't much out there yet.

krl1023 is a reallly nice box.. ehh the epiq is ok, it reminds me of the craftsman box.. if u want the epiq for the power drawer. u can buy that power drawer section and install it on anybox.. before the mrbig i was looking in to the krl1024... the mrbig is really easy to move, i can push the box one handed no problem with its 8 swivel casters

In an effort to restore this thread... here's my "new" roll-around...
Took possession of an older red C-man 5-drawer from my father. We got him a Matco 7525 for Christmas so I snagged this base unit.
Before... only a light vacuum before throwing it in the truck to get the cobwebs off...

Wiped it down with 409 and a damp rag. It took the dirt off but was also making my rag red. It didn't clean up as nicely as I'd hoped, but oh well... it's a toolbox. Peeled off the stickers I already have on my other box and garage fridge, then added a C-man roll-around top liner, and drawer liners. I was going to take it and have the top done in Line-X, but when I saw this roll that looked just like bed liner for $9 I decided to go w/ that.
Cleaned up...

$11,000??? You got out cheap my friend.....
OUT! I'M NOT OUT! My wife would love it if I were out. I am just getting started. I am having fun every day talking to people around here and meeting a lot of local retirees. I have a feeling that this will be a life long addiction to go along with my car addiction. I always bought good quality tools when I was still on the bench but I was never bothered with having a matching this to go with that. I never got excited about getting the exact same tool as I allready have but 10 years older.
This is fun.

I haven't been on this site for quite 2 years and I have tripled my tools and gotten about double the sockets and about 5 times the ratchets I had before. Probably double and tripled almost everything I had at the very least. But what was good about this site is I have tried to get good stuff when possible and or the best I could afford. I have a side compartment that has my taps and drill bits and other things like my meters and odd tools. I also don't keep my power tools in my box, but didn't take pictures of that stuff. My 3/4 SAE stuff is in a proto box that I didn't take pictures of either.

Is this what happens to all of us on this site? I am just enjoying the tools right now but if I am going to triple the amount that I have now, I will need a bigger garage. I can't fit a bigger garage, so I will need a bigger lot. If I get a bigger lot, I will collect more tools...

The zylops don't fit in the holes, but I haven't tried I know my hard handled snap on's don't fit so I would assume (I know shouldn't assume) they won't fit. Also I wanted to keep them in the 3 sets I had. Also have a spare set of the zklops ratchets but they are in the plastic boxes they came in next to my 1" ratchet adapters. The box is pretty neat to use, I keep most my commonly used stuff in it and it works great. I keep spare's and other stuff in the bottom box.

:shocking: It looks like the Craftsman rechargable that I have. They have a car and wall charger, so it lives in the truck for service work. It has the side leds and a set on the end for spotlighting. The switch button is really stiff, but there are 3 settings, side, end, and both. They go on sale for $15 from time to time and are regularly $30.

Awesome. It does look just like a HF light though. Right down to the yellow button and the offset led lights.

So, I was bored this morning, and I am waiting on my new blue CMan tool chest to get to the store. I spent some time organizing and cleaning the multitude of hand boxes that I have. You will see why I can't wait to get a full chest.
This is the first of two posts. :D First two pictures are the drawers from my Edsal tool cart. The have my impact sockets (mostly Snap-On), torque wrenches, and some other misc. stuff. The other drawer has channel-locks, calipers, nut drivers, and some larger SAE combos.
The next pictures are of the gray and red CMan box that has a bunch of sockets, wrenches, and drivers in it. You can really see why I need something bigger. :D

And here are 3 of the other 5 boxes I have.
The gray box in this post is a CMan, the red one a Waterloo, and i am not sure the manufactrer on the blue box.
Some more Craftsman sockets, and you can see some 1/2" S-K drive sockets right behind the lip in the top of the box. Also some Matco wood handles. In one of the drawers you can see some Mac flare nut and combo SAE wrenches. Looking for a metric set of the combos to pair w/ the SAE set.
More Matco wood handles, a Mac swivel head ratchet, and some assorted drivers in the bottom drawer of the gray CMan.
I really like the way the blue toolbox looks. I think it was the one that my grandfather carried with him when he flew. You can see some assorted wrenches, including a plomb and and old CMan ratchet.
The red Waterloo box holds almost the entireity of the metric stuff that I have. It is all CMan as you can see. The bottom of the box holds some metric CMan crow foot, flare nut, and combo wrenches. :)

I’ve just finished up the current 138 pages of tool porn here  and I thought I should “show off” what I’ve been using for twenty years or so of home auto repair. Mind you, I assembled a Jeep CJ7 with just these tools and a stick welder. By assembled, I mean: “The frame is here, the engine is over there, I gotta buy some seats I suppose… where is the body? Oh, yeah. It’s behind the hood over there in the other corner.” :)
I know some of the kids who’ve come here are intimidated by the volume and quality of tools that some of you guys have and think they have to catch up and quickly. Here’s my argument that you don’t NEED a lot of tools and the tools you do have DON”T need to be the top of the line. (It certainly doesn’t hurt if you DO have lots of top quality tools, in fact it’s a lot easier to do the job. But, NEED? No, not really.)
Here is my rolling tool cabinet (It replaced the CJ7 after the frame of the CJ rotted away.):
http://www.khslocum.com/images/Misc/0111001530.jpg
Let's look in the back:
http://www.khslocum.com/images/Misc/0111001530a.jpg
And inside the "drawers":
This one has miscellaneous tools, my metric Craftsman wrenches, HF breaker bar, break line bender, hub nut socket for the front hubs on the CJ7, tire plugs, etc...
http://www.khslocum.com/images/Misc/0111001531.jpg
This one has my sockets, SAE Craftsman wrenches, pliers, screw driver, files, etc...
http://www.khslocum.com/images/Misc/0111001532.jpg
Back in the barn, I have my old Craftsman three drawer with my larger Craftsman (mostly) wrenches and some miscellaneous stuff.
http://www.khslocum.com/images/Misc/0111001535.jpg

http://www.khslocum.com/images/Misc/0111001534c.jpg
http://www.khslocum.com/images/Misc/0111001534b.jpg
They are dirty, some have rust (That's what happens when you wrench in the great outdoors more than you do inside.) I think I still have a few burst sockets made in Taiwan back in the eighty's... But the term I like to use is adequate. They are exactly that.
Now that I've gotten that off my chest, anyone selling off a decent 3/8" and 1/2" ratchet? The no name 1/2" I got is crap... And don't start me on the Craftsman 3/8" drive one.
BTW, you guys who bought the US General chests from HF have just about convinced me to pull the trigger. Which, of course would mean that I will need to fill it... :)

Some people DO NEED a lot of tools. As I am sure your aware, some of this board are day to day, pro mechanics, who work on everything under the sun, from some POS, to some expensive collectors cars.
That said, even the average DIY'er needs more today, then they did when I was a kid. So much stuff is either all metric or mixed, torx drivers/sockets, etc. It really comes down to the choice of vehicle, how much one wants to do themselves, and how much access to tools they don't have, do they have.
Some days, I wish I could go back to things like the old neighbors, Galaxy, that you could practically sit under the hood, next to the engine.

My point was that someone, especially just starting out, doesn't need to have every tool in a truck catalog to be able to get the work done, and I acknowledged that being thus burdened does make things easier. I even admitted that I wish I was so burdened, but I'm so tight I'll never have what some would identify as the minimum required tools. I'll still keep my six vehicle personal fleet rolling down the road...
The reason I'm here on the forum is because I like turning wrenches for myself and I know I'm behind the curve on what tools are out there and what's worth the money. I've already learned a lot and I know my tools are about to get company. I did not show my pitiful air tool collection because I just started using air tools about a year ago. Now I have a new to me compressor that I got running last week that can run them properly and that is addicting...:)
As to sitting in the engine bay, a mechanic I knew, of admittedly short stature, startled the heck out of me one day when I walked into his shop and called his name and I heard a voice come from under the hood of a '90s vintage pickup truck around which nobody was standing. I walked around the front and there he was squatting in the engine bay elbow deep in the engine.:wtf: Short folks got some advantages they keep hidden from us tall folks so we don't get too jealous.
