I think you could use some socket holders http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00941324000P?keyword=socket+rack and if you insist on using craftsman screwdrivers (I would throw the low end clear handled ones as far way from you as you can); if you can afford it upgrade to the professional series they last allot longer (metal is heat treated better and tips are machined to actually fit fasteners!) http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00947202000P?keyword=professional+sc rewdrivers the small set is like $30. This goes for the pro thin profile ratchet as well, these do not come back for rebuilding very often and they have a much finer tooth; they are more comfortable in your hand as well. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00944995000P?keyword=professional+ra tchet
The key to avoid the weak tools in the Craftsman line; if at all possible and IMHO the standard ratchet/screwdrivers are the main culprit! Otherwise good luck with your new career; more/better tools will come with time and as you make more money!! :)

I actually bought socket rails today I cant slam the drawer closed or they fall over :shocking: , those screwdrivers I have had forever and I will be upgrading soon, ratchets I am leaning toward matco
I would tell the dealership to also go out and get new, matching, black trash cans; those yellow ones are disgusting! :)

Matco ratchets and the Craftsman thin profile are damn near the same thing. Do yourself a favor... for what your will spend on Matco ratchets - go buy the Snap On Dual 80 series.
Those Sears socket rails are basically the same thing taht you can find on sale 3 for .99 at HF - only with a handle. they're both made in China anyway.
Also... for screwdrivers.... you will likely end up buying a whole set. Craftsman Pro will do you jut fine. but might I suggest that you get at least a #2 Phillips ACR and a .40 straight blade screwdriver from Snap On. These will likely be your most-often used screwdrivers... and teh Snap Ons will be a help in these most common sizes.

Lol I have to take out the trash every time too, I used wheel acid and the pressure washer in detail and it didn't do a thing, my dealership is cheap, they wont pay for half the stuff needed to be done on used cars we get or send to bid sale but they will buy toolboxes lol

I am not sure on the measurements, the box is made by Borroughs Corporation they set up the toolboxes/workbenches/ and the shelving in the parts dept. I tried there website but they dont list specs on the boxes one day I will measure them.
It is the dealers, I actually dont have a box as of yet because I dont really need one right now.
All right i just wonder because when i look at that your dealer's boxes as look good but the drawers and bearing slides are strong??? i can bent the slides or drawers really easy... that reason i had to bought double slides on my snap on KRL1001B....

Amen!!! i got the used Grand Caravan with about 68,000 miles and required 2,000 dollars to fix so it will be safe to drive... so my dealership had to ship it to auction... but they wont buy built in toolboxes... they just pay the techs who do a lot of works as big pay.... i am hourly so i do all hard works and who techs refused to do so i had to do because i still got paid...

Sorry, but I disagree about the Craftsman socket rails; they have thicker, heavier gage metal clips/rails and built better then the cheaper rails out there. The clips have a little "bend" right where they attach to the rail and this creates more tension to keep sockets on the rails. I have had the cheap ones, where the clips will not hold the sockets on the rail (keep falling off especially the large heavy impact sockets) and being sharp I have cut my fingers too! If anything the craftsman rails can be hard to get the sockets off; in this case just take a pair of pliers and bend the clips slightly; "adjust" them until they come off to your liking. If you don't like the "rubber ducky" handles, then just take them off! The rail is slightly bent for the handle, so just bend it straight or hammer it flat. This will give you more room to put sockets on; these go on sale 50% off so keep your eyes open! If you end up not liking the metal socket rails; this company makes some different styles; I think they are the OEM for Snapon/Mac/Matco: https://www.ernstmfg.com/index.html

You can disagree all you want, but they are basically the same thing, serve the same function and one is not really that much different than the other. You can pay $X.XX for the Sears version from China, or you can pay $.XX for the HF ones. Let your wallet be the judge. The Ernst socket holders are well-documented on this board, as well as the Hanson socket trays and the Mechanics' Time Saver organizes.

The 1/ 2" IR235 puts out 500 Ft-Lbs of torque. More than enough to break most anything loose on a car. If feel that you’re not getting enough oomphs out of you 235, I’d suggest that you use a larger diameter air hose. You’d be surprised how much a 1/ 2" diameter hose increases the output of an air impact wrench.
When my 235's fall short on a job, I go to my 3/ 4” IR 261 air impact wrench that puts out 1,100 Ft-Lbs. torque. If all else fails, I bring out the big guns for the really stubborn bolts. My Chicago Pneumatic 1" with a 6" anvil and 1800 ft-lbs of torque.

Now these is a wise statement. Take note. Be wise and NOT in debt. This country should be so wise.
I don’t understand our younger generation today. What’s the big hurry to have the fanciest new car, plasma TV‘s, or the biggest and most expensive tool box? Credit cards and over extended debt is forcing youngsters live pay check to paycheck and is the downfall to so many families today. Depending on your credit score, you’ll pay $4,000.00 more for a $20,000.00 car than if you paid cash. And that’s if you take out the loan for only four years! So after you paid cash for five cars, the sixth one is free…. Now that’s a real savings.
Credit cards debt are a bigger pitfall to get caught up in with their impious rates and late fees. Plus once you carry a balance, the interest starts the day you make a purchase! Use credit cards wisely. I only use cards that give me 2% cash back and pay off the balance every month. And by watching the closing dates, I use the banks money interest free for almost two months. And at the end of the year I receive a rather large tax free bonus check.
Lastly, on a purchase where they advertise 90 day same as cash or a year’s free interest, negotiate an out-the-door cash price. Most likely you would receive 4% or more discount. Then put it on a credit card and have two months to pay for it.. All the above worked for me.
Re: Credit
Peoples thirst for "stuff" easily overpowers their common sense unfortunately. Just about every damned time I buy something I have to ask myself if I want this thing, or need this thing.
If I simply want it I go through this whole thing in my head about why I want it and its cost in the long run. By the time I'm done I fell so guilty I seldom want the stupid thing anymore.

No overpriced cars or homes here. My mortgage payment is probably less than many people's electric bill, and my cars are all paid for.
It is very easy to use credit improperly and bury oneself. I learned that a long time ago, but my neighbors are all living on the edge.

I remember those days all too well. The Snap On dealer was the service technician's "best friend." So was the Mac, Matco, Cornwell, Proto and every other tool dealer you can think of. Of course, 99% of mine was Snap On and all of my tools in the huge boxes are sitting in my garage only used on my stuff when I really need them.
Over 20 years ago, I decided to get out of the dealership wrenching career and went to work as a heavy equipment mechanic at a large electric utility company. About a year later I transfered into a shop that repaired various electrical equipment-- what a blessing!
I then went back to school to obtain some degrees and I have been managing the large shop for over 12 years. I don't miss the wrenching or the tool payments! But I do still enjoy using the vast array of tools I bought so many years ago. And I still buy some of the specialty tools to work on my airplane.... however, most of them are not Snap On.....

If you really enjoy the work, it makes you a happy camper. If you don't enjoy the occupation, it will make you desire to look for another job that is less stressful, has good benefits, and doesn't cost a good portion of your pay check every week to buy new tools.
If you are in a dealership environment, I can empathize with you. I really liked wrenching until I started a family. That's when you truly realize what a difficult life working for a dealership is. The dealership I worked at was about as great as they come, but still falls way short of what many occupations have to offer today.
If nobody wanted to work in a shop, we would be in BIG trouble today as those who are sharp enough to repair today's modern marvels are using their God given gifts & talents. However, I really believe that a talented wrench should be well compensated for their abilities. Hopefully, if you like it, you are getting paid well for it!

I hear what you are saying, but if auto mechanics were well compensated about the only cars worth fixing would be nearly new. It seems to me that modern manufacturing practices sort of imply unrepairability (or rather, a lack of economic incentive to repair)...and it moves up the food chain over time. As complicated as a modern PC really is under the covers, there's no point in fixing one. The same can be said for appliances, TV's, etc. Cars are well on their way there.

I think to be successful today, a tech needs to concentrate on a specialty and take advantage of any and all training offered. The opportunities for a good livelihood are there, but you must market yourself and your capabilities.
I tried to shift direction, but at the time, the dealers were looking for lot boys, not techs. I have been out of the shop for about nine years now. I don't think I will ever be going back.
Best of luck to those sticking it out!

Good to know they blend in...
I hope they filled in OK. If you can't use them, trade them for something you can.
I think I see that short Proto 17mm by itself in the middle of the drawer.

The pistons oppose each other and cancel out each other's pull on the crankshaft; which makes for a smooth running engine; probably the furthest thing away from a Harley V-twin. :D :spit:

Yup, a wife and kids will put a stop to toy buying in a heartbeat unless you are fortunate enough to have a better than average paying job which many such as myself are not! try swapping the turbo on a 2.5 Diesel Grand Voyager.. takes a lot of meatball marinara subs (somewhere in the region of 3) to make it a good day.

yeah... i am willing to work at Dodge where lot of big trucks go...(Rams) i am love to fix all Dodge Rams but i am really want to work on Diesel trucks as it is easy and simple to do... see how can GM or Ford pay to fix Turbocharger like 2 or more hours to replacement while Dodge only pay one hour to replacement it. it is so easy.
I never stopped working , my dealer owns 11 different brands , 10 techs at the chrysler/plymouth/jeep dealer , they are hiring more guys , due to dodge dealer going out and we are picking up the dodge dealer . I was the only A tech from pontiac/gmc the company retained , due to my lack of whining , integrity and that I have been a diesel tech for 24 years , I am lost at chrysler though , and they do not pay good flat rate hours , since they are basically on life support , propped up by the united states taxpayer

Hey, do you enjoy to use your KRL1003??
When I bought the box, it was one of the largest available. It is definitely heavy and well made. I would consider it a "Lifetime Achievement Award" as boxes go.
Now for the reality or the bad as it goes...
If you are trading up with Snap-On, you can expect full value if not more for your trade in. If trading in another brand, even a Craftsman box, you can expect as much or more than what you paid towards that nicer box.
When you hit the top of the ladder, what do you think you could get out of your investment? Turns out it isn't an investment at all. You'd be lucky to get half what you paid. Actually, you'd probably get less than that.
Snap-On, in my opinion, is definitely the very best. Worth the money?
There are serviceable options at more affordable prices, even for the professional.

Hey there all. New to the forum. Thought this thread would be a good place to introduce myself. I am a heavy equipment mechanic in training with a love for tools. Here is my box and just a couple of the drawers (Sorry about the quality, these were taken with my phone.) There is plenty of room to grow being that I just moved in from a Craftsman box. I still need a few more larger wrenches (my largest so far is 1 5/8), a whole set of 3/4" drive sockets and tools, and maybe even some select 1" stuff. Big stuff gets really expensive ,plus the guys I work with are generous enough to let me borrow their tools when I need them, so I will probably hold off for a long while. At least until I am done with school and working full-time. Too bad the school discounts don't cover the big stuff.

I actually bought the middle section first and placed it on a set of shelves for several months before purchasing the top and bottom on sale as a set. And yes, some of my drawers latch better than others. You can adjust them a little but they aren't perfect no matter what you do. (I believe the Craftsman owner's manual shows you how to adjust, but it's moderately easy to figure out -- just a little gentle bending.)
One custom modification I've made recently is to purchase six additional ball bearing drawer slides (3 left, 3 right) from Sears Parts. Now all three of the deep drawers in the bottom section (two 4" deep and one 6" deep if I recall correctly) have double slides for greater weight capacity.

Those Bondhus drivers you have are extremely comfortable; I tried some in the hardware store. I wish wish they (Bondhus) would make straight slot and Phillips screwdrivers with those handles.

I got them from my snap-on dealor, I kept asking him when the Snap-On hex Screwdrivers were going to come out because the old ones were discontinued, And when the 1000 catalog came out and there was no hex screwdrivers in there i had no other choice to go to another manufacturer

I have the 4 piece hook/pick set from Snap on, Love them.
For the way that I use the roll-a-way it is the best box for me. I will never have another box that does not have latches on the drawers to keep them from opening while you are moving the box around. Before this on I had the Craftsman Industrial 46" box, pre-griplatch. It had the wide top drawer like the current ones do, I had all of my regularly used tools in there, standard wrenches to 1-1/4", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", & 3/4" Drive Sockets, Screwdrivers you name it, but after the 4th set of drawer slides in that wide drawer I set traded down to the 36" box that I have now. Been debating on adding the side box to it, Need to keep the top open to work from, I have a Pipe Yoke vise to mount to the top, been thinking about swaping out the 1/4" steel plate that I have on the top for a 1/2" thick one and putting a regular Vise on it.
I need to get the bulls eye off of it, it got hit by careless fork truck drivers twice last week (which is the reason I will never buy a snap-on or MAC box for work).

Screw that... USE the Snap Ons. If you abuse the Cmans and they give way, you could get really hurt! Abuse the Snap Ons... the way I see it, if they are so great then they should be able to put up with whatever is thrown at them.

Replace the Craftsman ratchets that you have with either the thin pro line, the old school, catalog only roundheads (with the built in spinner), and/or breaker bars!
The only reason to keep those, is loaners, IMHO.

Did you custom fab the casters and create a bottom frame; was this a requirement in your shop or make it easier to roll around versus the stock casters? What did you pay for your pro box and do you like it; does it have grip later drawers or dentents? Does the aircraft industry require the foam inserts to confirm tool security and eliminate engine damage? Sorry for the questions (too many!), you have a unique setup there!

There are no spanners I sue in this box, they won't fit most of them, or more precisely their racks won't fit.

What did you pay for your pro box and do you like it; does it have grip later drawers or dentents? Does the aircraft industry require the foam inserts to confirm tool security and eliminate engine damage? Sorry for the questions, you have a unique setup there!
Yes, I made the top and cabinet myself. The top is actually an old solid core oak entrance door. It was a 36" door, which left me just enough room to cut the door knob holes out. I took some 1x3" oak and routered it, then cut it down on the table saw so that it sat over the top. I love having the lip on there, it keeps tools from rolling off all the time.
The frame is 2x2x.25" angle iron, and 2x2x.125" square tube with 3/8" steel plates for the wheels, which are actually bending. I'm going to have to redo them eventually. They seemed to have work hardened themselves and stopped bending. The wheels are 8x2" Colson casters. They roll MUCh better than stock, go right over air hoses and power cords, and in 6 years that I've had it, I have NEVER had one screw or rivet stuck in the wheels, it just spits them right back out. In contrast, on my other Craftsman box, I had to clean the screws and rivets out of the wheels once a week.
The box ran me $1800. They were on sale for $2300, and I jumped on it. The first box I ordered, Sears sold to somebody that just walked in.
The second box had the same happen.
The Third box somebody had speared through with a forklift.
The fourth box showed up, and my truck was in the shop. A co-worker offered to help and meet me there with his pickup. I called Sears, and told them that we would be there at 2:30, and we HAD to be gone by 3:00. They said no problem. We show up at 2:30, and a semi is backed up to the dock unloading, and they say "oh, it should be done within 45 minutes". At that point I completely flipped out. I called the District Manager and told him that the box WILL be $1800, it WILL be delivered by them between 2:30-3:00 pm the next day, the delivery WILL be free, or they can take their box and shove it, after I had waited 6 weeks for one.
It has the grip latch drawers, I love them. I'm not a big detent fan, and the Snap-On setup pisses me off. The foam isn't a requirement where I work, but I like it. It sure helps not to lose tools when you go through your drawers at night and see a big blank spot somewhere. Even my box at home is going to be done this way.

I think Nissan-crawler maybe lowered his box as to roll under the wings of aircraft, just a guess?
Yep. The 8" casters roll over things easily, and don't pick up screws or rivets. The frame helps keep it low, and also takes stress off the box. Even with a 2" thick top, and 8" wheels instead of 6" wheels, my box is 3/4" shorter than a stock one. It makes getting under wings and such easy, and it also makes for a great work surface height.
nissan crawler, that is a SWEET screwdriver drawer! You join my top 3 along with Merkava and Moose. I also really like your homemade add-on; looks good, seems very effective.

What's small about the socket selection?
1/4 drive, Craftsman 5/32-9/16" short and deep sockets
3/8 drive, Craftsman 3/8-7/8" short and deep sockets
1/2" drive, Craftsman 7/16-1 1/4" short sockets
1/4" drive snap on 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16" swivels.
3/8" drive Craftsman crowfeet 3/8-1"
3/8" drive Snap-On flare nut crowfeet 3/8-3/4"
1/2" drive Snap-On 2" crowfoot.
Oh, and one 1/4" drive 10 mm socket. That and a 6mm allen wrench are the only metric tools I have at work.
My box is 56"x30"x42". As for not being as strong as Snap-On, possible, but I'm not convinced of that. Either way, no C-Pro box at work has ever failed, so what's the point of spending money on Snap-On?
