Nice! Tons of black hard handle goodness there... :)
Yep, I'm a fan of the hard handles. Never cared for the "soft grip."

It's the man that makes the box, not the box that makes the man
But get the nice one's if you can while you are young!

ok, I just opened this thread in "show all" mode. ....
QUIT QUOTING PICTURES... I think there are maybe ten replies where people said "nice box" and quoted 15 pictures..
I opened it at 8:55 and it is now 10:34.. I couldnt read everything just I figure a waste of time. but quoting pictures with out having a question on that quote is a waste. we all saw the pictures above your post we dont need to see the pictures 3-4 times.. I mean realy.. It took an hour and a half to go through 4 sets of the same picture.
rant off...

homedepot! Umm the sku number is 362-059! I called and told them to check where its available...Only one place in the bay area out of like 6-8 that has it! Give your local homedepot a call.

Yup, I bought a pair of them for that price. They have been gone quite a while I think.
My son has one in his room that holds his Lego's. The other is slated for my garage with tools close to the front of the house after I move my 3 other boxes to my new shop in the back.

My meager setup, I have a few other older Craftsmen, just not in this pic. The Craftsman Pro is actually made by Waterloo their Magnum line. I am happy with it, better than their ball bearing series and can hold a lot of weight.
I cant compete with the amount of tools that some of you guys have. My most expensive dedicated tool is a factory harmonic frequency belt tester for checking Ducati timing belts, If you can get the factory tool its $1400.

Thanks. I picked it up a few months ago and cleaned it up. Thinking I might redo it again to paint it eventually. It was $200 so I figured it was a good deal for me, same as the setup on the left. So $400 for all of them.
My grandpa always said beaches were a good box. He used them to work on airplanes, so I like having a vintage style box like what he used to have.

since I am new here, I figured i might as well post a few pic of my ole box at work... I have had it for about 14-15 years now, however just started turning wrenches profesionaly a year ago. wrenching has been a hobby till now... mostly worked on local dirt track cars and a few of my own street vehicles. It is nothing to special just an old craftsman double bunk top and bottom, ut it has never given me any grief.. I also have a few smaller boxes still at home but did not get any pics of them

I got it off the truck on friday after waiting for 2 months and have been arranging since. I know my SAE collection is rather lacking, but it will get there. And to think I started with a 143 piece Craftsman tool set a year ago. :) I made the neon lighting underneath with a car kit from advance (with a steep discount) and a transformer from a printer to go from 110VAC to 12VDC. I am only 19. :) Please excuse the empty space, this new upgrade has given me room for MORE TOOLS! :lol_hitti

That is a damn nice box for you're age, I wish i could have one just like it.
Sadly the welding shop is a harsh place for tool boxes...they don't like the fire.
My Blue craftsman is all pitted from the hot metal and amber landing on it. Make sure you wax it at least 2 time's a week

broke,
how do you like the Irwin wire strippers? Been thinking about picking up a set of those. Also, where did you find the socket racks?
Wow, I like that, but it's gotta weigh quite a bit?
Who makes that tool case?
Chicago tool case white is no longer available and the wing pallet is now extra. The box weighs 120lbs for neutral support , half a as much for track or team duty. ( no need for as much tooling as I know what will be needed specifically)
I still need to add in two 1/4 SO ratchets for neutral and several more bits. Some tooling in there is just specifically for jump tools when I am in a car. Tools for jump include multi bit screwdriver, 6& 8 mm hex wrenches for pedals, 15mm open end for pedals, EMT scissors, knife, when i get them the 2 1/4 ratchets with 4& 5 hex drives on each and e-tape.

I have those same Erwin strippers and I'm not real impressed. The Gardner & Bender ones I have are way smoother. The Erwin strippers seem to be really stiff, they tend to break smaller gauge wire instead of stripping, and they are really bulky. They are not my first choice if I need to get in a tight spot I can tell you that.

I like the irwin strippers, they work well for me on smaller wire. I have the Gardner and Bender ones as well, but I havent used them in a long time so its hard to compare. I rember them being just as nice, but the red grips on the handles kept falling off.
The rails (and holders) are made by Ernst Manufacturing and are awesome. I looked for a long time trying to find organizers that would work for me and I think I hit the mark. I have since basicly orderd the catalog (Screwdriver rails, wrench organizers, more rails).

How has your case held up? My dad bought one and within about 5 years it started falling apart and in 10 years it has gone to it houses some spare tools at his shop with a piece of speaker cable for a handle and a bungee to keep it together.

It is is just fine I am very particular about function and the handling of my case. No one move it or touches it it has survived 2 seasons so far with not a hit of any issues. Chicago cases are the most popular here in the states with CH Ellis second and Pelican in for third. A lot of stress is taken off the box when I do team support I can dump out a lot of extra tools not needed. We are usually stationary with our boxes so there is not much stress to them at all. ( flying is a different story and a nightmare in the making sometimes)

That would make a difference, my dads tools each year average 35-55k miles of riding around in the truck with probably 1k-3k of that on rough roads. Another 500 or so miles on the back of a snowmobile and then 4-7 days of use per week on top of that.
He had long thought about buying a bigger case from them but in the end he has just gone to the a CLC soft sided bag and uses wrench rolls and klein canvas zipper bags for organization.
At a race are boxes are either stationary or packed away in the car following the race on smooth roads. We probably do over stress the boxes with the amount and weight of tools but there is nothing bouncing around as the tools are far too costly for that. Besides who want to listen to squeaks and rattles for 150 mi with no music on just the coms.

Finally got around to taking some pics
I haven't wrenched for a living in about 20 yrs but my box was looking pretty sad. So since I got the garage finished I decided it was time for a new box.
I don't have everything in it's place yet it's getting there.

n2hcky, so what about the US General toolbox; are you happy with it and does it fufill your needs? Did you get it at harbour freight?

Here is my stuff. I just got my 56" Harbor Freight combo and am VERY happy with it, I got both pieces for $750 out the door after buying the boxes on sale, then using a 20% discount coupon and then having the manager knock off an extra $150 due to some minor dents/dings. IMO, this box kicks the crap out of any of the Husky, Kobalt or Craftsman boxes I have seen. I would NEVER EVER consider paying the price of a new Snap-On, Mac or Matco box when this one is almost if not as good as all the big names. I have Snap-On badges on the way just to mess with my buddies:lol_hitti Also, I am not cheap at all and just about all my hand tools in that box are Mac, Matco, Snap-On and SK.
The other boxes pictured are a 60th anniversary Snap-On and a ball bearing Husky. I also have a 50" Snap-On roller as well as plenty of other tools in my Harbor Freight Box that is not pictured, I am in the middle of redoing my garage and am still working on getting everything where I want it.

So far I am VERY happy with it. :bounce:
I could not even think about getting a new box if it had not been in the price range of the Harbor Freight ones. I know a lot of people say "for the money you can't beat these boxes" I would say it is tough to beat these boxes period.
I know there are a lot of tool truck boxes that are nicer and bigger or more customizable, but for just the average "Dude" go HF.

I was just trying to be humorous, the toolboxes actually all belonged to my Grandfather. We used to go to real estate auctions and flea markets. Some of the toolboxes were new, teal box, double bank craftsman, but the others were for the most part bought here and there. I don't know the history of all of the tools, he died two years ago when I was 25. I just remember the tools and boxes that I was with him when he bought. He worked for a company called Westinghouse servicing large (several hundred horsepower) electric motors. I would say that the boxes are Ninety percent full, with the exception of the matching snap-on top and bottom. Most of it is older tools, as we bought less and less as his health declined.
Here is a picture of one of the drawers

The ClarkeHD box is a decent box for the money. One of the main reasons I got it was because of its layout. Standard stuff on the left, metric stuff on the right. I'm a little OCD and I like the layout of the box. I think Im off to a pretty decent start with my tools.

Hi superautobacs, Thanks I like the Gedore wrenches as well, when Princess Auto first came to eastern Canada they carried them, I picked up some the smaller sizes then but they switched to the awesome Powerfist brand before I could get a full set. I picked up some larger ones at flea markets and auctions, apparently years ago when you bought a new european made piece of forestry equipment it came with wrenches and other hand tools, Gedore,Teng, and Sandvik are some of the names i've seen

rainy afternoon here so i'm going through this thread; 25 pages up from the bottom and 25 from the top and something occurred to me.
is auto mechanics so much different from all other manual trades? does the 20% - 80% rule not apply? i could go on giving specific examples, and i'm sure there is a dedicated punch which is only capable of removing the knifling pin without scratching the johnson rod on a 1922 Abject Zero, but let's face it people.... we got a lot of OCD shit going on here....
and not that it is entirely a bad thing - yes the wife knows your out in the man cave polishing your 11/64" phillips ratchet thingie - but let's lend a kind word of reason to the young fellow just starting out and doesn't realize his 50$ husky ratchet and big box screwdrivers will get him going until he can enter the elite tool collectors of eternity club. maybe own up to the possibility that by the time we can affort lifetime tools, that term may be somewhat shorter than the guy using them to make a living.
just a couple of thoughts from a neophyte....

Two points if I may...
1. We've had lots of young fellows just starting out come onto this board and ask for advice, and they get it. I don't remember anyone telling them to buy a $10,000 dollar tool box and fill it with tons of shiny tools.
2. I, and most of the regulars who have posted on this thread, have taken a lifetime to collect what we have got. Some spend every last penny on new sets, some, like me, buy odd things here and there - probably more used than new.
So, I, for one, am not about to apologise for a. what I have got and b. enjoying looking at what others have got.

The color was picked out by my daughter and is from Minwax. It's called "Island Water". Lucky for me it matches Ford blue pretty good! The stays, I think you are referring to the combo and flare wrench holders, are the material they make cutting boards out of. It was scrap - Delron? The wrenches hang on 3/16" brass rod that is swedged into the plastic. Flare wrenches are kept from sliding off by grommets.
Glad I made it to "Tool Porn" status. Thanks:bounce:

Here is the link to the guy in CT that sells them. He has all sizes and grip ranges. I did think about locks, but I opted for letting a would be thief get to the tools easily so they don't trash my cabinet. Tools are easier to replace! Besides, the alarm keeps burglars away.

Thought I would update the box pic. Was wanting something to put on top of the box to protect the flanges, and couldn't see paying for something from the so man. So this is what I came up with, took some maple flooring left over from a job and made a frame, nailed down the hardwood, then used a biscuit/plate jointer and attached pieces vertically around the edges mitered on the corners. I am happy with it so far and thought there should be some photographic evidence of it not covered with junk :bounce:

the purple one.
then i traded that one in last june for this one.
http://www.nitroowners.com/~library/837/ATT00010%20(2).jpg
then i seen this one on the truck for the past 3 months, and did some calculations and such.bought the top little box for it and when all said and done with the trade was out about $1100 with intrest for both boxes.
http://www.nitroowners.com/~library/837/ATT100001.jpg
this box is great has the steel top with rhino lining sprayed on it.the green one i traded i made out on.didnt loose anything on it.actually if i didnt buy the $500 blue box on top i would have been a even trade! between the 2 i lost only 4077 ci space.with the blue top i gained 400 ci over the green one!
oh it looks a mess on top, didnt get everything squared away yet.the scoot on top is a hybrid.a cross between a harbor freight scoot and a subway car headrest cusion.man is it comfortable!!

Hey Vulture, Do you use the insulated wrenches much? I do lots of heavy industrial electrical work, and have yet to use one. Usually if I have to work something hot I can use my insulated Klein screwdrivers. If those don't work the powers getting turned off. I wouldn't want to crank on a connection with a 1/2 bolt holding it together. Lots of juice flowing through those big lugs.

Yes, ever since we implemented the Arc Flash (NFPA 70E) any tool we use inside an de-energized electrical cabinet has to be insulated.
For people reading the thread who are not familiar with or don't work high voltage, you never work in an energized electrical cabinet. If you do there are two results, either your dead or looking for a new job.

clueless,
When I bought it, I didn't know how I would like the riser but after adding lights, power strips and a few other extras, it made a great work area. It's nice to be able to sit down and assemble smaller items with lots of good light. The older you get, the more you appreciate good light (and a padded stool to sit on). Once you are past 50, you REQUIRE it....
Edit: Most of us "old" guys require good light, not the padded stool (although it is nice)....

My teal KR661. Picked it up in 1993 (or thereabouts). Upgraded the locks (to tubular) and the upper drawer slides (to ball bearing). Still use it at work - pic was taken today. Colors are off thanks to it being a phone camera, but even with a good camera, this teal never looks quite as good as it does in person. I keep the red fender covers on top of it to protect the top, which still looks new. Been questing for a top box (KR-690 or 691) for it for a while now...
Threw in a pic of the wrench drawer since it's the only one that looks nice at the moment - totally outgrowing this box

Here are some pics of an old craftsman top box and homemade bottom box that my Grandpa worked out of at Westinghouse from the late 40's 'til the early nineties. It's been almost twenty years since he used anything in it and your hands still get covered in grease after you reach in it for something :bounce:
I find boxes like this much more interesting to look through. I always hope I can come across something old like that full of tools for sale and have the money to take it home just so I can have the fun of digging through it.

Thanks, at first I purchased one of those large box sets of craftsman tools, but I decided for just a bit more I could buy the modules which are their professional tools (even though I only use for general fixes around the house and cars). I like them a lot more than their cheaper stuff. I took the advice from someone from the forum here about the module trays and used some of that spray foam and that made the trays pretty tough.

The first one I did was the socket tray and I put quite a bit in so the sides bow out a bit in the middle. I did the wrench trays last night and have been putting in a little at a time so I won't overfill. You just cut it flat when it's all set. The first pic is of the socket tray that is already cut.
I can't find the thread now, but someone on this forum suggested this in a topic about the module sets. That's actually how I found this site - searching for information about the modules in google.

Yeah the key/lock location for the Kobalt always seemed strange to me. The corners are kinda "angled" like how S/O did their early style boxes. I'm not sure who was producing these boxes for Kobalt/Lowes at the time but its roughly a '98 vintage. Back when Kobalt tools were made by Williams. Probably a Kennedy piece.
The Cornwell needs a couple of the lower handles replaced as the "grip latch" system isn't working right. I have a thread somewhere on here about trying to get replacements and getting no love from Cornwell or Kennedy.

guess I will post mine. I moved a few years ago and still have no shop so all my stuff is scattered around the house. I addition to the boxes I would love to show the shop when it gets fully set up. Ive got a Bridgeport mill, Logan lathe, arc and mig welding units, blast cabinet, parts washer, anvil, brake and a host of other machine shop equiptment that is just lying in storage and driving me crazy that I can not use them.
But back to the boxes
First is the backup box that will be in the basement when the outdoor shop gets built. Good to have everything you need as a backup in the house though both my boxes are in it at this time.
Kennedy base cabinet with the basics but needing a few decent socket sets to complete the setup. Top is a Gestner oak unit with some machine tooling in it. I plan to re-paint the Kennedy. No real order to it but mostly good stuff with some junk sitting in it too.

I believe it was made/sold by "RAC" industries and many others who relabled it under their own brand. Very nice collection of vintage tools --

OK, fasten your seat belts, here are my El-Cheapo tool boxes ($200 for both:lol_hitti). Basic Craftsman wrenches and sockets as well as some other typical tools for the non-professional's home garage.

Well I finally got around to taking some pictures of the new tool box.
Picked up the HF lower cab for $320 on sale about a month ago and thus far it seems okay but not quite as good as most people make it out to be. (I would say its at about Cman BB level quality except with more slides on the big drawers)

On 1 side we we have a pile of pipe threaders and reamers and on the other side we have paint gun, 1/2" cordless drill, air hammer and DA set up with a buffer pad.
Warning to those who are planning on massively increasing the tool box size they have: don't just plan on buying the tool box but be prepared for the buying binge you will encounter afterward trying to fill it up.

Sweet box!:) I came really close to getting a HF chest, they look nice, are well built, and have a lot of storage options. Congrats on the new chest.
I also just got a tool chest (actually 2 of them), they're Torin, and so far I am very happy with them.

Yes it is. I waiting on the bottom box it's on back order. Only thing is these boxes are very heavy I've owned Craftsman box's in the past. Kobalt boxes come with draw liners and a PVC cover not to mention the slides I my opinion are better the the sears stuff.

Well the bottom box arrived last week and was damaged from shipping so I refused delivery. I had an idea from a "tool catalog" to build a riser over my home made rolling tool bench. So I put myself to task and completed if a an hour or so. I have come to the conclusion that I really like the riser so much that I'm not going to get the bottom box but rather build a new rolling bench...

Well that totally sucked! I hate it when things arrive damaged.
But since a rolling bench will probably work out better for your needs, then in the end everything worked out fine.:)

My Craftsman 4 drawer 26" bottom and 3 drawer middle box and 3 drawer "Rally" box had finally been outgrown and I bought one of the last of this style I've seen at my local Costco. You can just see my old Craftsman in the background. They're still in use (you never really stop using a tool box do you?) as a "project center" and overflow tool storage:

I love this thing! It's got casters on one side, has collapsible legs, a retractable handle for pulling it around and opens accordian style. This is my new "full time" track box.
Who is the manufacturer of this ? I wonder because of the sticker with the "GS" ("Geprüfte Sicherheit") on it ! From germany ?
You are correct. The company that originally imported them has gone out of business and I picked this one up at Overstock.com for $99! They're available from another importer now but for $249+S/H.
