After about 30 years of use, I'm finally going to retire my old RemLine tool box. This box has truly served me well :(
Here she is, in all her glory.....
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f109/slowtwitch/CIMG4108.jpg

Here's one of the overstuffed drawers...
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f109/slowtwitch/CIMG4106.jpg

All the rest are the same, packed to the gills. It was starting to be a bit of a pain. looking for stuff.

Anyway, I saved up all my nickles and dimes, from scrapping copper, aluminum, steel and such. Then went out shopping. First of all, I knew I couldn't come close to affording a Snap-on, Matco. So, I looked at the boxes at Home Depot, Lowes, Sears and Harbor Freight.......

Anyway, after a whole lot of deep thought, looking at quality, price, the winner is.......
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f109/slowtwitch/CIMG4110.jpg

Harbor Freight.

With it being on sale and using a 20% coupon, I got it for $320. I tried using another coupon, to bring it down to $300, but, they didn't bite :)

This tool box is awesome, ball bearing glides, drawer liners, heavy duty and most of all...spacious. What's even more amazing, is that I started moving some tools over from the old box and I'm finding tools that I forgot I even had :bounce:

On the minus side, I have to find room for it. Shoot, it's about as big as my garage :headscrat

Man I wish I was closer, I would be trying to buy that ol Rem Line off you. I think that is one sweet old vintage setup.

You are correct. The company that originally imported them has gone out of business and I picked this one up at Overstock.com for $99! They're available from another importer now but for $249+S/H.

That is a really cool box. I need to check Overstock more often.

Buck, I'm not going to retire it totally. I'll probably move it to my basement shop and use it as a machinist chest, to go along with my old Logan lathe and my old Enco mill :)

Yeah, they are kinda short for the fastener size. These wrenches were way heavier built than I expected them to be too. I don't think the length will be an issue as I won't hesitate to take a BFH to these anyway. Eventually I would like to replace them with some Hazets or Stahlwilles, but those wrenches get real pricey in the bigger sizes.

I noticed your angle wrenches are all in metric. Does the equipment you work on use hydraulics? The reason I ask is because it seems even on the newer Caterpillar equipment, the hydraulic lines are still standard sizes, even though most fasteners are metric.

The machines I work on have extensive hydraulic and pneumatic systems but being made in Austria, they are 100% metric.

I worked for Massey for several years so I do have an extensive set of SAE tools such as angle and line wrenches but they now reside in my garage.

Only having to worry about metric makes it a lot easier to fit everything I need into my road chest. The SAE stuff I have at the shop now are actually the Craftsman/Mastercraft stuff I have from when I started in the trade. I already had a set of BP SAE ratchet wrenches at home so I didn't bother taking them. I use the 15/16 one in place of a 24mm ratchet wrench.

I just checked out the Advance Auto Parts website, and you're right they do have Torin tool chests. I checked the model numbers on my boxes and the the ones on their website. The bottom box is the exact same number as mine (TBR4411-X), but the top box is an 8 drawer (TBT4408-X) while mine is a 10 drawer (TBT4410-X).

Looks like I have one of the few "gloss finish" Torin boxes out there.

OK, I've almost finished figuring out where I want things to go, so I'll share what I've finished so far. Note, I have a reasonably big order coming from Mike and it will round out the ratchet assortment. I have tool cart in use in my shed, I'm replacing the engine on an old Asplundh wood chipper, so some of my 1/2 drive ratchets, 3/8 drive ratchets, a tray of 3/8 sockets, a few wrenches, several screwdrivers and extensions are not in the drawers. Any way here is my tool assortment.http://i653.photobucket.com/albums/uu260/66hertzclone/DSC_0168.jpg

Yep, those are the ones I used, I bought the 140 piece set. If you look close you can see that I had to use several of the smaller sized bins for some of the hardware. I have some metric hardware yet to sort thru and once I do I'll order individual bins in the size I need to clean that up. Even with all that hardware in the drawer, it opens very smoothly, it is surprising.

I have the mind set that if one is good two is better!!!! Also in case I break a tool, I have spares and like most people, I love to be able to have a few ratchets out with all of the sockets I need rather than switching sockets on the ratchets, I swap ratchets or if a friend helps we have enough sockets and ratchets to get the job done. I also don't use the pear head proto/plombs as they are two clunky for my likes, but I have found I love round heads, either the old proto round heads, or the snap on swivel heads are realy nice. Also I also love the genius/top tul 72 teeth as well and use them most of the time. I am waiting to see what kind of deal we can get to buy the zyklops, but if we can't come up with something, I will have to buy all 3 sizes on my own.

The reason for MATCO main box and Snap-On Side Boxes is that Snap-On had a sale for 25% off on Side Cabinets making them over $1200 cheaper each than the MATCO ones. Now in fairness the MATCO ones are almost 4" wider, but it was a deal I couldn't pass up.

You can't find it in the SO catalog because it isn't an SO box, I just put an extra plate on it. It is a montezuma mfg box, that strictlytoolboxes.com sells. The model is an LA-400, and it is made in the USA. Nice box and works well with my kra-300f bottom with side box. Here is the link.

yeah i am understand that... my tech friend has similar what you have matco main box but little short the height(less drawers). he need "locker" side box where he can put all bulk or testers boxes in instead in drawers But what he got price quote, he said forget it!! Also check with your dealer about trade ins, for when guys trade up.

Here's mine, I'm just a hobbist and have no projects at this time in the near future I would like to restore a car once I get enough tools gathered up. No high end tools like Snap On here. The majority of the stuff is Craftsman, which works just fine for my needs and a Sears is just 3 miles down the road.

Here's the box: Craftsman(the one that was on sale during christmas for around $700)

Hello,

Here is my main tool box. Its a combination of 3 Snap Ons and a Commercial Craftsman That I built a base for.

The second one is actually 2 large rooler bearing bottoms, I "think" they were "Champions"? Not bad boxes, but not great either.

I built the bench, its abour 70"x 32" with a 3/8 stainless top and an angle iron rail and drip edge. I like it real well.

The last is an older Kobalt set that I use in a room were I mostly assemble short blocks. Again not great boxes but pretty nice for the money.

Stock Z/28....NICE! I think your whole shop could be considered a tool box!! Your place looks like one of the shops here in town. Crammed full of every engine building tool and using them too. You would probably like more room, but hate to think about moving tools and equipment. What is the main type of engine you build?

OK I'm going to try this for real now. I operate and maitain some aircraft for a company and am upgrading my boxes. I travel on the job so the Pelican case is my road box and has most of my common used tools. When I'm back in the shop I just remove the tool wraps and boxes from the Pelican case and put them in the tool cart. That way I don't have to search everytime I take a trip.

The cart is modified with leg extensions, two side trays, an extra drawer and a riser over the top shelf that I can lay tools on and access the shelf underneath. I just clamp the tool wraps to the top lid of the cart which makes things pretty handy.

The roll cab is a new KRA 2306 that replaced the Williams box I showed in this thread a couple of days ago. Instead of going to a gargantuan box, I decide to split up with a cart and a box and get rid of some stuff I just don't intend to use anymore.

Nice box, we all have to start somewhere. I am curious to see what is inside.

I've been lurking on thiks for awhile but haven't figured out the picture deal yet. This is my attempt at attaching so please bear with me. If this works more will come.

Stock Z/28....NICE! I think your whole shop could be considered a tool box!! Your place looks like one of the shops here in town. Crammed full of every engine building tool and using them too. You would probably like more room, but hate to think about moving tools and equipment. What is the main type of engine you build?

Hello,

Yes its a bit "tight" in the shop.

Most of the engines are performance or specialties of some type or an other. Quite a bit of welding and fabrication as well.

I also wanted to get 2 organizers for my euro box for the top chest for nick nacks so they arent rolling all over the place, anyways here's what's in the Craftsman chest. JD6619A,

Were you able to purchase the 41" Euro Chest at 1/2 price from CT?

Can I ask for a favour? Could you tell me what the approximate measurements are for the drawers? I haven't seen one in person, and their darn website doesn't even tell you.

:)

JD6619A

Superautobacs,

the top portion of the euro tool chest I got for 1/2 price 399.99 instead of 699.99. The bottom portion I got for 849.99 instead of 999.99. I'll get the measurements tomorrow.

the advice I can give you is wait till they come on sale, no sense in paying full price. They do come on 1/2 price from time to time so keep an eye on that

Here is my new main box, KRL-7023APC. Haven't moved all my stuff into it yet, waiting to get done with a few other projects around the house. Someone on one of these message boards said: "Nothing says LOVE like KRL" ...and I have to agree. It was a "spouse-sanctioned aquisition" around my B-Day this year....

rwhite692,

I don't know if you mounted the side handle on yet or not, but the best way is to run the screws in by themselves first with some air tool oil on them before mounting the handle on - that will loosen up the powder coating that gets sprayed in the thread inserts when they powder coat the box. If you don't do like I suggested, it will be very hard to screw the screws in dry. :shocking:

PS. 3/16" Allen is the size.

Our 6.0L has 140,000 miles and has been great for the last 125,000. If the engineers would get together instead of everybody doing there own thing, the 6.0L could have been awsome. Diesels are meant to be daily workers, they have to have exercise to stay in shape.

These are awesome.

Those are MAC (made by WrenchRack) but the color in the posted photo is quite deceiving. They are not really so bright a green, they are more of a kelly green in real life. The pink ones, (which are also MAC), it is the reverse....they are more vibrant fleurescent pink in real life. This error in colors is likely due to the fleurescent lighting in the garage.

WrenchRack makes these things for MAC , Snap-on and Matco, and the colors vary with each seller....but the product is really the same. Prices are probably the best from a vendor that does NOT put their own name on them; but you might not find hot pink.

when can you move out of that box so i can move in :bounce:

I don't plan on moving out of this or upgrading beyond this for many, many years. It is certainly the biggest box that will fit in my current garage, and I still have lots of room to buy more tools...but not that much that I really need to add for the type of tinkering I do. Not to mention it is in near perfect condition, (now that I had the door of the locker repainted at a local bodyshop).

I've been through eight boxes (counting three top/bottom combos seperately, so my tools really got moved 4 times), in the last two years. Always buying used and upgrading, then selling the other boxes. The last three, including this one, I bought full of tools as well, (which all get sold on eBay.) If you have the cash to lay out up front, and you are willing to part out a collection of tools on eBay, (a box like this could take 150+ seperate auctions), you can own a box like this, or a lot of professional tools, for very little money. By far the best way to get tools or a great box, is to buy a complete collection of high end stuff, complete with box, then sell everything you don't want.

Here are my toolboxes.

The black rally box on the corner of the workbench was my first toolbox. It was a christmas present from my parents when I was 12 or 13. The two red craftsman boxes are the same as in the next photo.
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n177/edwardsmt/P5010357.jpg
I bought the craftsman ball bearing bottom box when I was 19. The side cabinet came along right after I finished college. The two kennedy boxes were bought while I worked as a machinist in college. These boxes hold all my original craftsman hand tools, machinist tools, spare chucks and fixtures.
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n177/edwardsmt/P1010006-1.jpg
I quickly outgrew the craftsman boxes and got a good deal on this snap-on KRL762. It's almost completley full of snap-on hand tools.

JD6619A,

Were you able to purchase the 41" Euro Chest at 1/2 price from CT?

Can I ask for a favour? Could you tell me what the approximate measurements are for the drawers? I haven't seen one in person, and their darn website doesn't even tell you.

:)

The measurements I took are aprox but should be close to it I didnt take a measurement for the top area with the lid and I also didn't take a measurement for the work table section. The drawer measurements are listed below

Top chest:
+++++++

4 drawers (wide ones)

23.50" W
15.25" L
1.50" H

4 drawers (narrow ones)

11.50"W
15.25"L
1.5" H

Bottom Chest:
+++++++++

1 drawer (the widest one)

37.75"W
15.25"L
4.50"H

4 drawers (wider ones)

23.50"W
15.25"L
1.50"H

4 drawers (narrow ones)

11.50"W
15.25"L
1.50"H

2 drawers (at the bottom)

23.50"W
15.25" L
7.50" H

11.50" W

You gotta be kidding me! That is a sexy truck right there. 7.3 and 6.0 Super Dutys

NOOOO!! i know many ford Diesel technicians already left and got other job with better pay and steady works. i did asked them why they left ford dealership when 6.0L come out with new truck. they said 6.0L are P.O.S... also the factory of Powerstroke 6.0 almost pay very little for warranty or recall times to bill... they said it is not worth their time so they either quit or left to work for other diesel shops where some of trucks still use 7.3L powerstrokes.. they said 7.3L are best and last longer than 6.0L even they said they rather to work on 7.3L over 6.0L...

Right now i have ford diesel technician which is mine of friend, he do a lot of powerstroke engines works. he said he refused to work on 6.0L... oh well.. i never work on it before but what i see and told by other ford diesel technicians which they keep tell me to stay away as told me to stay with Cummin diesel which they said Cummins are best!!

Well considering all the guys begging their bosses to get them D'maxes over 6.0s and 6.4s in the oil fields I would stay the hell away from them. Also just going by experience almost nobody I know who has a Ford work truck with a 6.0l or a 6.4 ever bought a personal truck with one, the 6.0L probably did more to encourage Dmax and Cummins sales than any advertising Chevy or Fiatpar ever did.

I wouldn't mind having about a 97-2000 7.3L if I could find one of the mythical few that doesn't shell Injectors , glow plugs and pumps at a regular basis.

BTW I have to see if I can find it but someone shot a picture of the Rock Springs Wyo Ford dealer with 10 Haliburton 1 ton Fords all in for 6.0L work so if you like working on them the oil patch definitely has an opening for you.

Honestly, I like them both 'equally'. I don't wrench for a living, so I unfortunately don't have the true test of using them everyday to know which feels better in the hands for the long run. With that said though, I'd put Cornwell and Snap On on the very top for quality wrenches... I really like the extra long length of the Cornwells (which is why I bought them) and I really like the Snap On flank drive plus wrenches. The Cornwell wrenches have a slightly better finish from the factory, and are narrower in the beam than the Snap On's if that's what you're looking for. :)

Let's see how long it takes before he grenades the tranny and is at Brians Truck Stop for a new one. I agree, the 7.3 wasn't very fast but was reliable. Had an awful cackle cause of the injectors though. The 6.0 wasn't bad as far as speed, but the more hp/ tq you put at it, the heads became a concern. The 6.4, I have no idea. I know my neighbor has one and likes it. He hasn't done anything.

I went right from my 7.3 to a Cummins HO. The difference was noticable. Like many, I was running a 140hp chip, stacking with a edge box and intake, bigger down pipe and exhaust.

HO common rail? The stock transmission is fine. Don't do 15 minute burnouts and you'll be fine. I've got a factory tech valve body in mine and never had a problem, especially with those tire howling 1-2 shifts :bounce:

We have a new 6.4 company truck with less than 5k on it that went caught fire a couple weeks ago.Got the fire out and had it towed to the dealer, found out it was also 5 litres over full of oil(diesel in the base).Have heard of 4 others that have caught fire in the last month, one of them an ambulance carrying a heart patient.

wow!! i do service some of Ford's power stroke engines but i always look at ford's technical website and see how many oil quarts it hold.. so i pout to that max then check the oil level before start it. then check a dipstick again to make sure it is middle of level or near a max level not overfill.. i hate the overfill...

oh... but why not there is a recall for diesel leaking?? i know ford has bigger recall about brake fluid that can set a fire itself... that recall has put double fused wirings to prevent the heat and burn up a wiring near the brakes..

Wow, fuel leaking into the pan. I know Ford had this issue with the 6.0's but not the 6.4's. What is funny is that Navistar/ International, never had any of Ford's issues with the 6.0. They have different fuel delivery and I think that was the biggest issue. Has to be, I guess.

Not that I would officially know, but I have a friend who is a Navistar Tech and he was the one that informed me.

The reason why International fought Ford over the 6.0 was cause the fuel delivery is different. Ford designed the fuel delivery on the 6.0 motors for the Superduty. Navistar supposedly didn't have any of the issues Ford had in a International chasis.

I'm no expert but this guy is pretty solid and would make something like that up.

For the most part, Intl has not had as many issues as Ford. Obviously, the VT-365/6.0L had problems in general, but Fords far worse then the Intl's. And the 6.4 is the same, yet I have yet to see any issues with the Maxxforce 7. I have no proof, but heres some food for thought.

Ford 7.3 - 250 HP

Int'l T-444E - 175 - 250 HP

Both are in general very reliable engines.

Ford 6.0L - 325 HP

Int'l VT-365 - 175 - 215 HP

Hmmm, the 6.0L is widely considered a pile of junk, and the 365, though no princess, has at least from what ive seen, had fewer issues.

Ford 6.4L - 350 HP

Int'l Maxxforce 7 - 200 - 230 HP

Ford is already putting warranty shortblocks in trucks, and I have yet to see a 7 in a bay for anything other then a service.

Like I said, Ive got no proof, but do the math.

Nope, we haven't had a break-in as far as I know. I would trust all my fellow employees with my life. I also live in a pretty nice town. At work, I never even take the keys out of my car, I just leave them in the ignition. I catch myself doing that in bigger cities sometimes though.

EDIT- Even if I did have a locking top and bottom, what would keep them from taking the whole cart?

I rarely use combo wrenches. I mainly use sockets or my SK XXL G-Pro flex ratcheting wrenches. They rock for anything, especially brakework and belts.

How long have you had those SK wrenches? I would really like a set like that, but I was wondering about how they hold up long term.

I was certified by ford on the 6.0 and by international on the 365.There isn't a whole lot of difference between the fuel systems other than computer programming. One has electric fuel pump and the other mechanical. The biggest thing I noticed was the 6.0 would usually work good if it was actually worked and not used as a grocery getter. The 365 by the nature of the chassis it's in gets worked when used and has alot fewer issues. The majority of the problem 6.0's I've seen were driven like a car.

i also want a hutch, but me being 6'4 isnt in my favor. ill probably trade in this box within the next 2 years and get a triple bay box with riser. just dont feel like spending 3 grand on a hutch when i know im gonna have to upgrade to a triple bay box within the next few years.

all my left hand drawers have bs in them. top left is paperwork and R.O.'s. 2nd is pens, pocket screwdrivers, etc. 3rd is all my electrical tools, 4th is a parts bin, and the bottom has other misc. stuff. my lower bigger drawers, have slider hammer, bearing splitters, gear pullers, pitman, etc. also, tap and die sets, cooling system pressure tester, bolt extractors, stud removers, etc. just didnt take pictures of all them.

Electric Orange KRL1022 I recently bought for $3K........still need to decide/order/buy new socket/wrench holders and transfer tools from old boxes..............

I was SO CLOSE to ordering the 56" EXTREME combo (Bottom/Top) for $1600, but this came along. Hope I'm ultimately happy with my decision. This should be the last box I ever buy. Would be nice If I can get good resale.

I picked up inside my trailer as I figured loading in/out of my pick-up was just too difficult and didnt want to hurt anything/anybody............

Diesel_Crawler, go to Costco and get you some cardboard trays to keep your files in. Seeing them lay so close to the side of the drawer is making me cringe. :shocking:

This tray here is a CoffeeMate tray.

I'm hoping you guys dont flame me, but I'm posting these pics of my initial xfer of "tools" into my KRL1022. Not being a professional mechanic, and being cheap and frugal I never went with ALL SnapOn or MAC.

This is my lifetime hodge podge collection. I laid the Snap-On Rachets on top just so you see. I also have 12 pt std SnapOn combo wrenches. Are not 6pt going to be better for my newly plated Camaro bolts (show car restoration)

I also need to learn how best to replace missing sockets and wrenches.

I really dont want to start over, dont have any specific budget, but would like to add some of your "must have items"

Some of my junk tools need to "go away" and I'll be doing that. I'm just looking for good suggestions on socket holders (HANSEN?) more or different wrench holders.

Also thinking about box end (both end) gear wrenches or ???

Anyway, here goes ........................

Diesel_Crawler it is all good you have metric tape measures !

Do not put files in cardboard boxes cardboard hols moisture and will kill the files faster than incidental hits against the box. Your storage of you files is just fine do not others tell you other wise. I have twice as many in a draw 1/ 4 the size as long as they are not clanging around from movement they will out last you.

How does putting them in a slipery cardboard box make them "Clang" together less? :headscrat The lines that came with the box are super nice nothing moves a 1mm even when i was pushing the box around. Were it is right now is were it stays, the only thing moving is the drawer in and out and there super smooth!

People who would "Flame you" over showing us your tools are idiots and have not right to say anything or be taken seriously. we are all people with a mutual Interest each of us having out own to share and we can all learn alot from each other.

You have lots of nice tools there, there work well for you  Glad you shared with us!!!

As for holding your sockets, I just could not like the Henson socket trays i ordered myself enough of these to replace all my socket rails.

EDIT: will post link when crap on's site is up :lol_hitti

Some of those files are 10+ years old and still going strong! I don't get how putting them in a cardboard box is going to help them from sliding around yet still :headscrat

Come on Merk, if you cant drop it on the floor or scratch the inside of the box it isn't worth having.
Just like what I did with my F80 when I bought it. I dropped it on the floor to scratch the handle. At least I know where the first scratch came from. :bounce:

And what do I see on the SO truck today, but a brand spanking new KRL1022. Candy apple red, not my favorite color , but he made me an offer I couldnt refuse. Lets just say it invoved a $4,000 trade in on a box I spent $2,000 on, and $1,000 off list from the get go. I caved.

Pics very soon.

Seems to be alot of those "good deals" on the truck. I got 1500$ off mine plus i pay no Interest over the 4 years i financed it. saved me around another 4500$ with 0% on it :bounce:

Also I can't wait for the pictures! i have never seen a Candy apple red before!

Damn, no interest?!?!?

Ill be paying less then $1000 over my 3 years according to the math, but Ill be paying more then I have to each week.

The candy apple is just a darker red. Not as much orange in it I believe?

When it was all said and done, I walked away with the box for about $2,800, and added my $400 truck bill into so Id only have to make 1 payment.

I dont have a close up pic. Ill be back at work on Tuesday, so nothing until then.

Its this Snap-on hanger. (http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=storage&item_ID=692&group_ID=74&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog)

I used a piece of double sided tape/foam (not sure what its called, but we put it on new trucks to help with rubbing problems) to secure it to the middle, and protect the finish.

And just for the record, its a Lisle creeper with a MAC sticker on it. :bounce:

Should work perfect. I put the 2 rods in the center and hang it by the bottom, but some guys at my shop will put them at the far edges and hang the creeper by the middle grab handles. It works, but you have to force the creeper onto the hooks.

Get the Margards for it - they look damn good on a candy apple box. Get the brushed finish.

Anyway, here goes ........................

If you are looking for socket holders you may want to try the lock a socket trays. I bought mine through Matco but I think everyone sells them. The thing I like is I can customize sizes and take all the sockets to the job. The pictures I have are bad but it does show they will hold upside down. I have a couple of these so I can keep metric and SAE seperate.

Can "somebody" please expand on this MATCO item and/or say what other brand markets same part.

Does the above tray come with the five rows of holders, or was this made up from single row holders ????????

Thanks for better pictures?

I'm not sure who makes them for Matco but I have seen them on the S-O truck also. It is five rows, I believe they come 2 1/2" 2 3/8" and 1 1/4" I set mine up for 1 1/4" row 3 3/8" row and 1 1/2" row. When you put the socket on you give it a quarter turn to lock it. If I remember right I paid around $55.00 for mine.
