Just curious to know if anyone has made a good buy on a Honda powered pressure washer recently? I'm looking for something in excess of 2600 lb. psi output. I've done a lot of looking on the web, shipping kills most of the good deals that are online.

That's probably a little bigger than I need. I was hoping to find something in the 5 - 7 h.p. range. I don't need to remove paint but clean the driveway off (dirt no stains). I have fairly low water pressure at my home and to clean all of the concrete I have takes me over three hours just to hose it down. I think that a decent pressure washer would not only save me time but use considerably less water. I plan on living here for a while meaning I'll have the washer for some time hence the desire for the Honda engine. My father and I reapair small engines for a side business and we used to have a line on pressure washers, we don't use that distributor anymore and I find myself in the position of being a typical consumer.

This is one of those times that the little something inside me tells me not to believe every thing I read on the internet. I've fixed hundreds of Honda engines, getting parts isn't a problem. Genuine parts can be pricey but there is a large aftermarket for many of the popular replacement parts. The washers I've been looking at 5 - 7 h.p. are the same commercial engines I work on regularly, no worries here. Now the pump and the rest of the pressure washer may be a different story when something breaks.

I have a craftsman with a honda engine. It has the onboard soap/whatev er tanks which are handy...I think it's 28 or 2900 psi. I'd reccomend it. I'd ignore the thread about JD.....some people seem to find trouble wherevr they go. Who goes back to the place they bought something for a dang spark plug????????

I have a Honda 2600 psi that is about year or two old. I use it and so do my neighbors. Seems pretty solid.. dont remember if I got it at Lowes or HD..
Hope this helps

Don't know if I'm too late to chime in, but figure I'd add anyways. I recently picked up a pressure washer after a fairly good amount of research and reading. The Honda GX-Series motors come highly recommended. However, more important than the motor is the pump. The GPM flow is as important, if not more important than the amount of pressure the unit produces. Especially when you are talking about cleaning your driveway, the more water flow, the quicker your driveway will get cleaned. There are several good brands of pumps (Cat, General, AR).
There are three different pump styles on the market, hopefully I'm remembering this right; wobble plate, axial, and camshaft. The axial and wobble plate pumps are not typically rebuildable, or worth rebuilding, and have an expected life of somewhere around 100-200 hours of use. Camshaft style pumps are rebuildable, and expected use before a rebuild is roughly 1000 hours. A camshaft style pump will look like this:

There are two 'ExCell' brand pump sold at Home Depot which have both a Honda GX motor and Camshaft-style pump (the larger one was mentioned earlier in the thread). These two models, I would say, are entry level professional pressure washers. The current selection at Lowes, are, well.. upper level consumer models. Typically units with axial and wobble plate pumps are MFG'd as disposable items. You have to pay more for a camshaft style pressure washer, but at least its rebuildable. Lowes doesn't carry anything with a camshaft pump (that I've seen yet at least).
The next step up would be belt driven pumps, which remove engine vibrations from prematurely wearing the pumps. I don't think units like this can be found for less than $1000.
I didn't find many stores that carried any units I was interested in (aside from home depot), but there are lots of pressure washer vendors online.
I ended up buying the cheaper ExCell model from Home Depot with the smaller honda gx motor and a cat brand pump. Been pretty happy and impressed with it. Hopefully this post isn't too long to lose any relevance.

Thank you very much! This was a very informative write up on pumps and has confirmed what I have been finding in my research. I have been looking at the pumps you've described and have pictured mostly CAT brand. I've also learned that Honda uses both a professional and consumer grade engine on pressure washers. The consumer grade engines are becoming more popular and are on a lot more machines than the commercial grade engines. In short the Honda engines that we've seen for years with the white square gas tank on it is the commercial or GX series engine. The new consumer grade engine looks more like a horizontal shaft Briggs and Stratton engine and is painted black. As I've looked around Honda really seems to be gearing towards the masses, I happened to look at a few Craftsman mowers while doing this research and have found that Honda puts a motor on some of their machines and doesn't even put the Honda brand on the engine. Others higher in the line have the Honda brand proudly displayed. Just thought that was an interesting tid bit. Do you mind if I ask what you paid for the one at Home Depot. The only ones with Honda engines that they show online are the Coleman washers.
Here are a couple that I have been looking at online one is a house brand washer and the other is a Devilbiss. They are both shaft driven pumps. Shipping makes what appears to be a pretty good buy not so good.

I've worked on these on lawn mowers and all I can say is that they aren't what they used to be. The GX series is a better engine.

Sorry for the delayed response, I picked up the pressure washer at home depot for $640 after tax. Model # ZR2800 (Ex-Cell being a division of DevilBiss, or so I gather).
Now that I check their website, I don't see it. However, I don't recall ever seeing it online. In store selection varies from location to location.
Either way, the two that you posted look like good buys. The second one is exactly what I have, except a better price.
