What do you guys have for your tunes in the garage? I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to use so any feedback would be great also.

I'd do a nice satellite sub system and build the subwoofer into something like a work table.

I bought a receiver on eBay that will be hooked to 2 speakers mounted 10' off the floor and 28' feet apart. I've got an old PC with a big hard drive, I plan to run a wire from the sound card to my receiver. MP3 jukebox baby!

i've got a Netgear MP101 wireless MP3 receiver hooked into a 600-watt Onkyo 5.1 surround system. Speakers at the 4 corners of the garage, subwoofer under the bench (it's an old computer desk, so there's some wasted space in the back). Next step is to set up the speakers at the front of the garage on brackets so that i can swing them out to face out into the driveway when i'm out there, but i've been too busy messing with the cars to get around to that.

The MP101 has access to the 3000+ MP3 tracks on my PC... i set up some playlists of 1-3 hours each on various themes, so i'm not constantly messing with it. The only trick is not losing or spilling something caustic on the remote. :withstupi

It freakin' rawks, d00d! :deathmeta

The previous occupants of my house left me with a Bose satellite system which I quickly relocated to the garage :) They're really too small for that amount of space tho and I think I'm going to add a second smaller sub to fill in. I've got a portable MP3 player hooked up to a cheapy Yamaha receiver. Eventually I'll have a wireless LAN setup in the house and then I'll be able to stream MP3s to either the house, deck or the garage.

I plan on upgrading my home theater receiver shortly and the current one is going under the TV in the corner..

I then want some average in ceiling 6" speakers, a total of 4.

I have an old Sansui 771 receiver connected to an MCS (Jc Penney) digital tuner.

For speakers I have a set of bookshelf size self powered Sony's with square drivers. They will use 120v or 12v DC and take an aux input.... or act like regular speakers.

Old stuff, but it works.

I used to have an old HK tube amp that I used, but I sold that (didn't have the chassis cover).

I've got a JVC combination CD/DVD/Receiver hanging under my arm-mounted TV, that is currently just hooked up to a pair of EPI 70 mains up high against the back wall and a AR sub on a shelf down next to my toolbox. Eventually, I might add center and surround speakers......but it does kick out the jams as is :deathmeta

I have the most awesome stereo system for my garage. It has car audio components and it bumps loud. It's called a PJimmy System. I bought it from this web site http://pjimmyaudio.weebly.com
It has TV, DVD, IPOD dock, playstation....everything. I also roll it into the back yard to watch games and fights with my bros while I barbecue. Check it out. Here's a tip........tell them that your friend refered you and give them his name and number and they will send him 100 bucks.

I pickup cheap old tuner/amps at garage sales and throw them on a high shelf above the entrance door (makes it easy to turn on and off as I come and go. When it dies I pitch it and buy another, usually $5-20 range. Currently it is an old Sansui. I have a large pair of old speakers screwed to the wall up high that I have had for years. Not as good a sound as den but plenty good enough for the shop and not much invested. I think I'm on my 3 or 4th system in 35+ years and haven't spent $100 yet.

Boy:
Am I with Jeb on this.
It is a shop, not a studio.
Garage sale stuff (I am up to the cassette technology now) and 2 curbside speakers in the upper corners of place.
The dorm style players are so cheap and good enough for the job it just doesn’t make sense to spend money on stuff that is drowned out half the time with tool noise.

I put this together in an hour or two, has the stock 6-disc stereo out of my F150, couple rockford fosegate component speakers, Sirius radio, and aux jack. Plus some white leds in the speakers just because I had them.

A friend of mine was over helping me mess around in the garage a few weeks ago... as we're working on some stuff in relative silence she goes "Man turn on some tunes". Ummm I don't have any. She about smacked me.. "YOU DON'T HAVE A STEREO OUT HERE? The guy with 2000+ cd's, 500+ records, used to have a radio show.. photographs concerts and takes music with him everywhere doesn't have at least a radio in the garage??" Sigh... nope. I guess I never wanted to put anything out there. I'd hate to put a classic Marantz, Nak, etc out there only to have it get soaked in dust, maybe a lil grease, etc, etc.

So I got to looking around and I have this old Aiwa shelf system I got like 15 years ago. Works well.. smallish.. has aux inputs. I'll be installing it somewhere in the garage shortly. I don't know if I want to plug my ipod into it or build a cheap garage computer so I can put things like fsm's, etc on there as well. Main problem is my garage is only heated when I'm out there. Might nix that idea for the winter at least.

It's basically a 400Watt Klipsch ProMedia 4.1 Audio System (http://www.klipsch.com/products/discontinued/details/promedia-4-1.aspx) hooked up to a eMachines T5246 Media Center PC (http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/emachines-t5246/4505-3118_7-32862573.html) with a Vizio VO22L 22" 720p HDTV/Moniter (http://www.vizio.com/productDetails.aspx?id=1788&pid=1508).

I mostly just listen to Pandora (http://www.pandora.com), but I do have cable out there so I can watch cable TV if I want to. It's also connected to my Home Media Center PC (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/mediacenter/default.mspx) which acts as a DVR, so I can easily watch any TV, movies, video, audio/MP3's, or pictures I have stored on any of my machines in the house.

The computer is also great for researching/downloading DIY How To articles and be able to see pics of what I need to do when working on the cars.

I already had the speakers, and I bought the computer and moniter refurbiushed. Total cost was around $500.

A buddy of mine has 2 "American DJ" speakers in his shop, got the pair, and an "american DJ" amp with cables for 500$ from some guy who was giving up DJ'ing. The small speaker,amp/tuner/cd player packages common to dorm rooms and smaller shops just doesn't cut it in a gymnasium sized shop, ya know?

I wanted somthing simple and I don't need to rock out in the shop, just to have somthing to listen too. So I went with a Sony car head unit that I made a corner box in the work out room of the shop with a couple of 6x9 in the upper wall of the room and a couple of Radio Shack speakers in the shop are above the the doors.

Mine is in this ballpark. Bought a pair of speakers several years ago for about $5 at the goodwill store...work great and plenty loud enough. Have an older Sony 5 disc cd player, tape player and receiver...cost about $50 for everything and is more than adequate for my 32 X 24 garage.

My stereo is in the same league as Jeb, kbs2244, and the Galaxie guy who wonders what my escape plan is.

Put simply, it's nothing fancy.

Back in 1998 when I was a college freshman, I purchased a cheap Sony all-in-one unit. Following dorm life, the stereo got tucked into my parent's attic and then my basement. Most recently, it has been reincarnated as my garage stereo.

But.... let's say I didn't have this stereo laying around. I'd find the cheapest thing with speakers and rock it. My garage is more of a workshop than a "man lounge", so anything nice would just get ruined by grinder sparks and bondo dust in about seven minutes. Besides, who can hear the stereo anyway with earplugs in and a grinder singing?

Here's one thing that I did that's really nice: I pulled speaker wires to each corner of the garage prior to drywall... Really cleans the mess up and keeps the speakers out of the line of fire.

Up til now, I've been using whatever not-quite-ready-for-the-trash-heap CD boombox or clock radio I had on hand, replacing it with another from the "stockpile" when it finally dies or something heavy falls on it. :)

However, I just got a 30Gb refurb'd Zune, essentially for free (woot.com bag o' junk - an occasional special "grab bag" sale), and I've got lots of AC-powered PC speakers. I figure I'll just seal the Zune on it's dock in a Ziploc, duct tape the Ziploc seal so it's still good with the power and audio wires coming out, and put it all inside a small box to protect it from impacts (a shoebox would be more than enough room). I'll set it on shuffle, and let it play - if I want to , I can open the box and use the controls through the Ziploc. I don't care for the Zune, so it'll be as useful as it can be for me. I think it can play FM radio, too.

I'll set up a pair or two of PC speakers, and turn 'em on as needed. They'll be abused a bit, but I've got plenty of those. I don';t have the room a lot of people here do to need full-size speakers.

Eventually, I can see building a box to hold my older spare car audio compnents, and having it as a cart.

I guess it depends on what your looking for. I prefere a little better quality and versatility. I have machinery all over my garage. I can roll my system anywhere in or out of the garage to keep it out of my way. To you guys who think their bench grinders are too loud to hear your music, you guys need to upgrade to something a little better than that garage sale stuff. It really doesn't take too much to overpower a bench grinder. I spend a lot of time out in my garage and want to hear my music and enjoy it.

Probably a stupid question, but how do you power the car stereo systems? I've got an inverter to go from 12v to 110v, but how do you go the other way? I've got an old Alpine stereo, Fosgate amp and MB Quarter speakers just rotting away in the closet.

A cheap way of doing it is to use a computer power supply. One of the rails on them is +12vdc. You can Google for this type of information, very easy to do.

I picked up an inverter from an electronic store locally. It connects the black (-) and the red (+) simply to the back and just plug it into the wall outlet for power.
I think it was about $80 but you can get them cheaper for less power needs.

I used to just use a marine battery with the battery charger hooked up to it on low charge while I was using it. Worked good for me.

Just DON'T hook the battery charger straight to the radio without a battery.

I thought about doing this, but do you get the full wattage out of the powersupply? Or would you only get about a third of the power? Because it generates three different voltages I think.

I'm sure it would work fine for a car stereo, but I would be hesitant to use it on an amp.

Ok so if anyone is curious on the ampreage of said device, I answered my own question.....:headscrat

I found it on the google search, the one they were using said that the 12 volt side would put out around 12 amps.

I have a Sony mini system (CMT-CP1) with my ipod attached (just use playlists - battery has lasted 12 hours in the garage so far) & I have my old Sirius Sportster Replay receiver transmitting FM modulated signal. The Sirius is left on 24/7 & works all around the house on any radio that we have. I have the unit placed between the garage doors, so it is easy to change stations when I'm in the garage. I bought the Sony mini system about 8 years ago for about $200. It sounds great and with ipod & Sirius, I have all the music I need.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41C19E8G0TL._SS400_.jpg

I am planning on updating my home theater system (receiver & speakers) in the near future. When I build my new garage, I will use my Yamaha Pro Logic receiver (center channel just blew recently) & the Infinity surround speakers in the new garage. I can still plug in the ipod & should be able to use the same Sirius unit.

No need for a $2k garage system.

Sorry it looks nice and I am sure it sounds really nice, but for $2K to just get the entry level version is way too much!
You could make it yourself with the left over car or home audio equipment that most people have in their attics or just shop on Craigs or eBay.

I do have old stereo equipment & computers, that I plan to hook up later on, sometime next year, 2009.

I've got some old random tuner/5-disc CD player hooked to 2 old speakers mounted in the corners. I usually plug my old garage laptop into it and listen to my XM online w/ my wifi card.

I plan to get a year or two old home audio receiver (Pioneer or Sony, nothing too crazy) off ebay and mount it underneath one of my cabinets. I'll then get some satellite speakers for the 4 corners of the garage and one or two for the underside of the ends of the cabinet section. One requirement is that the receiver will have an input source for my IPOD. You can get a decent used receiver for under $100 and satellite speakers for about the same. This won't be an audiophile-grade system considering it's a garage. But for the price of the receiver and speakers, you'd be hard pressed to get a decent shelf-type stereo system.

In regards to using a computer power supply for an amplifier, you can get a better power supply that will put out 20A+ Some of the 700W+ PSUs will have higher amperage. But, by the time you fork over the money for the power supply you could buy a decent home audio receiver.

i had my 13+ year old Aiwa shelf system in my previous garage. i mounted the bookshelf speakers on a wall not connecting with the interior of the house to reduce the noise bleeding in.
we just bought our new house and i have not yet been able to get anything set up in there (at all...it's just piles of boxes). in the next month or so when i start working in there, i will be reconnecting the Aiwa unit to some in-ceiling speakers instead of the bookshelfs. i don't want them on the wall and these in-ceiling speakers are a great deal from www.monoprice.com: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10837&cs_id=1083703&p_id=4104&seq=1&format=2
i just got the same set for our master bedroom, and they are a hard deal to pass up. with the speakers, wiring, and shipping, i can have it taken care of for $80. one pair will be more than suitable for my two car garage. the best part is they sound great, don't take up any space, and are not suspect to damage without trying REALLY hard.

we will be upgrading our living room surround receiver soon, and will be moving the current surround receiver to the master bedroom, and the 2channel receiver that is in the master bedroom now, into the garage to replace the Aiwa.

I just have an old PC and a inexpensive set of 2.1 speakers for a MP3 jukebox. Plus I can surf the web and read car repair & other manuals. The PO left some panasonic speakers behind, one day I may hook-up an old Kenwood receiver I have.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm still putting together all the components. I just acquired a bass bin from the theatre in my hometown in Ky. It is a 1939 RCA Shearer bass cabinet that houses 2 woofers, 15" diameter. I have just bought 2-15" JBL 2226H woofers to put in the cabinet. This is a pic of the cabinet after my buddy pulled it out of the theatre.
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a180/hobie1dog/Audio/PDR_04041.jpg

You can see the back side of the cabinet where the 2 woofers will mount.
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a180/hobie1dog/Audio/PDR_04031.jpg

I will be powering the bass bin with a Crown K2 amp putting out 2500 watts bridged into the 2 woofers @ 4 ohms.

It will operate up to 400hz where it will be crossed over to the mid/high speakers which will contain 2 Audax PR170MO 6 1/2" midranges(combined efficiency of 105db/1 watt. and then to a Ciare tweeter with a matching 105db efficiency rating.

I have Solus I/O speakers mounted above the garage door and another pair of Solus speakers up high on the side walls for side fill.

Haven't finalized the 7.1 receiver choice yet or wether or not I'll just use my Pioneer Elite c72 preamp with a Yamaha DSP-1 signal processing unit for the rear channels. It's a work in progress hopefully to be finished within the next several months. I wanna start JAMMIN

Old receiver and old speakers. There's too much saw dust out there to keep anything nice and new.

The power outlet is hooked into the light switch so I don't have to remember to turn it on/off.

One of the inputs on the garage receiver is a 100' cable I ran from Zone 2 of my main stereo in the house. That means anything played in the house can also be played out in the garage. So I've got the use of CD/DVD/iPod/DVR in the garage even though each of those units are in the house.

Hobie, be careful those speakers look like they could do sheet metal damage if turned up too loud near your vehicle.

Give us some stats/background etc pls.:

Well, I have had alot of the high end speaker systems out there through the years ( Magnaplanar Tympani IVa, Mirage M1) and they were all in-efficient pigs eating up all the power you could feed them and still lacking in the dynamics, and then I built a few....this is the last set I built 8 ft tall.
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a180/hobie1dog/P1000815-1.jpg

so I found a set of the Klipschorn speakers to go listen to. There was the dynamic impact I'd been missing all those years, so I then go to the Klipsch forums and found out that there had been a successor to the Khorn called the Jubilee.
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a180/hobie1dog/Audio/JubileeinOak.jpg
The horn loaded bass bin has the tightest, most dynamic bass I'd ever heard, so I was going to build a set of the bass bins as the plans are available for the DIY'ers. I started investigating more horn loaded systems and found the guys who were into the old Theatre system components. The hoy grail was the 1939-1949 or so RCA systems with all Field-Coil drivers. The bass bin used (2) 15" woofers and was then crossed over to a 9 or 15 cell horn up on top driven by (2) RCA midrange drivers that went up to 11k or so. I had a premonition that there was one of these in the old theatre in my hometown in Ky, so I called my buddy who still lives there and he went down and found out that they had just recently unhooked the original speaker system and indeed it was an original RCA Shearer system.
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a180/hobie1dog/Audio/PDR_03411.jpg
So he talked to the owner who said we could have it. This was on a Sunday, so he said that we could come back and get it during the week. When my buddy went back he found out that the third owner of the theatre had gotten up and disconneted the midrange horn and taken it to the dump. My buddy goes to the dump and talks to a guy who tells him he remembers a lady throwing them in the back of the trash truck and it has gone to the landfill. The pair of RCA Field-Coil midrange drivers currently go for 3500.00 a pair as there are estimated less than 100 of them in existance. So these dumb-a## inbred ignorant back-woods small town Ky. rednecks have destroyed a part of audio history. :lol_hitti So anyway my buddy did go back to the theatre and manage to get the large bass bin which had one remaining 15" woofer in it, and also the RCA amp that powered the speakers. http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a180/hobie1dog/Audio/PDR_04111.jpg
We sold those to a guy in Pa., who has a RCA field coil speaker museum. One of the guys on the Lansing Heritage forum then talked me into keeping the bass bin and loading it with a pair of JBL 2226H woofers which he said he had done and toured Austrailia with back in the 80's. So I'm going to be getting the bass bin next week and then I'll see how good this thing really is. I have to say that all the movies I watched as a kid had this speaker playing behind the screen and it filled up the whole theatre, so it should fill my 20x22 garage up really well...especially when driven with a Crown amp. The original field coil drivers were driven with a 45 watt tube amp and filled up the theatres, so 2500 watts should be REALLY good.:bounce:

I'm going to lay the speaker on its side which will fill up the space I have below my 110" projection screen on the front wall. The speaker will be 7ft long and 42" high and 30" deep which will serve as a great workbench. I'll likely put two hinged doors on the front covered in grill cloth. In this space here.http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a180/hobie1dog/garage/P1020905.jpg
Instead of using horn midrange drivers, one of the JBL guys talked me into using the Audax pro sound 6 1/2" midranges that are 99db eff, so two of them spaced close measures 105db/w 1 watt, which is what the bass bin puts out, and he says that it doesn't have the horn colorations that become annoying and cause listener fatigue. This same driver is used in the Waveform Mach 1 speakers ( 17K ) and the Jadis Eurythme ( 45k ) so it is a proven high end reproducer of the critical midrange area.
I'll let you know how it turns out and post some more pics of the final resting spot.

Like someone else said before. the garage/workshop is for working in. The machine noise drowns out the sound system....I pulled the radio / CD player out of my car before I sold it. Put four speakers around the shed. one in each corner. and that's it. Good enough to hear the news and also play some cd's. I miss most radio stuff because the machine noise is drowning out the radio.

And like others have said, a garage is used for many different purposes, some of us eat, drink, and sleep with music playing or at least in our heads, it's what makes us who we are. For others a $ 5.00 beach transistor radio with sports news makes them happy...different strokes for different folks. Audio equipment that puts the musicians in the room with me is what matters to me, spending the valuable remaining minutes of my life working on an over-engineered, mechanics nightmare of a vehicle is less enticing the older I get.:(

A good wood shop is necessary or else a good portable cutting system like the Festool plunge saw with the guide system. Accurate cuts are mandatory, then the finishing part is the tricky thing to do. I had been working in a custom wood shop for several years and was doing all the spraying, staining, finishing for 7 years or so. I had an automotive booth to spray the line arrays in.

I ran speaker wire from my garage down to the basement where my computers are. I have my main computer do nothing but play music all day through out the house. All speakers, or rooms have an on/off switch to them. So I download the music for free off of the internet, Limewire or www.thepiratebay.org, and have it play all day. I just turn on the speakers, or the switch in the garage, and boom, instant music. It gets butt having you own juit box with 100's of songs on it, AND NO COMERICALS!

When we bought our farm house, the 5 speaker surround system with matching infinity speakers was WAY overkill for the house... so now the finished space (no dust in there) will have them. And, along the way, I saved a set of outdoor speakers (klh? some brand like that I believe) that will mount nicely in the workshop area and allow me to hear my tunes in there too.

I have my garage wire in as part of the whole house audio so I can have TV, Sat radio, computer, I-pod or regular radio playing. It is sharing power with the front porch speakers off a 150w x2 HK receiver. The Boston Acoustics speakers are mounted about 13-14 feet off the ground about 30-35 feet apart. I have the control mounted right near the stairs to the house. So far it is working well.

I use the CD drive in the computer to play the CD's, get the radio online, and if I ever move into this decade, I can store music files on the PC and play them as well. The computer was salvaged from my neighbors garage so my system cost me 10 bucks so far and sounds great.

I saw AJ5's post and bought one of those systems for my garage. WOW this thang rocks.

The way I see it, If you spend a lot of time in the garage then it's worth the extra few bucks, if I find myself too busy for the garage, then this system is versatile.

I had it in the yard for my nieces quincenieta and I even had it at my store for a little grass roots sale last week. I blasted christmas music on it. Went off without a hitch both times.

I put it out there and plugged it in to try it out. So far, I have a serious noise issue. I plan on moving it to the outside wall and see if I can get better reception. Funny though, my portable shortwave radios don't seem to have as much interference on them. I guess I just need to figure out a better antenna system.

I agree - not only is that a horrible design which could easily be reproduced for 80% less money, but the guy actually created shill accounts just to push his overpriced car audio setup and tout it as being "high end".

That "Pjimmy" crap is the biggest joke I've seen. I've got an old set of Bose 201s (I bought them long before I knew what quality speakers were supposed to sound like) and I have an old Sony Receiver and CD changer. I can promise you that system sounds way better than that pjimmy setup. I could go out and buy a 46" Samsung LCD TV for the garage and still have way less invested than one of their setups.

Are people really naive enough to buy that sort of garbage? If so, I'm in the wrong business.

It's great to see so many guys using their old home audio stuff, it's not state of the art anymore but it was the cats PJ's in the day. I think it kinda goes with vintage tools and other equipment. I have limited space in the garage here bit I found a great H/K computer speaker system with a nice sub for 20 bucks at a yard sale. The little guys sit on the desk here, the amplified sub is under the desk, it's all hooked to the computer. I can play CD's or get streaming audio online from just about any radio station (no RFI from the fuorescents) or play any music files I have on the PC. Cheap, powerful, small and versitile.

All I have in my little garage is a small ghetto blaster, but it's good enough for now. When I finally get my large shop built I'll probably set up a better system.

Old receiver from 1996 or so.
two, 8" shelf speakers in the rafters.
12" sub under the corner bench (powered by the "B" channel)
Surround sound speakers on the back wall. I normally put the Stereo in simulated surround and just use these speakers since I don't need the 8's and sub all the time.

I also use the old center channel as the other "B" channel to put in the window when I am working outside.

An old dash and crashpad mounted on the wall, wired so guages light up. Period looking radio in the dash and some old drive-in theatre speakers. Amp and connecters for the i-pod are hidden. Want my shed to fit in with what I play with in there.
