Let's say... pre 1976.
Here's my 1963 Chrysler New Yorker, 4-door hardtop. Factory 413, Thrush sidepipes. Currently laid up in the garage getting front disc brakes, new rims, and crossram intakes. Hopefully in time for the Spring Autofair in Charlotte, but i really need to get on the ball...
Also pictured is my wife's '62 Cadillac Miller-Meteor Classic Duplex. It's a combination hearse/ambulance, and it doesn't fit in the garage.
Come on, i know we've got a bunch of gearheads in here... line 'em up! :boobies:

Not a very good pic but this was when I was building my 1970 something Datsun 240Z Drag car. 454 w/ powerglide. Narrowed 9" ford rear. 15 x 30 M/T slicks under the rear fenders. We built and extended the fiberglass front end by 8" between the door and front wheels. 2 x 3 tube frame.
It ran in the mid 5's on the 1/8 mile strip.

This is my dad's. Hes owned it sense the 70s. Right now its sitting in a barn, rocker panels rusted away. No engine/trans. Originally had a 4 banger i think 80hp top speed of 50 MPH. Oh yeah its 59 Ford Thames from england. We had the original engine sitting in the garage of one of his rental houses up till a few years ago. When the renters moved the engine was no where to be found. So I guess we will have to put a big block in it some day, oh darn. Me, ive got a 65 t-bird, well not titled to me but my dad said I could have it. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/satatic/1965%20Thunderbird/P1020754.jpg
I just started working on it like august of last year and didnt get very far when winter hit. So now I'm just waiting for summer again and hopefully have it finished up before september when I move to tennessee, unless plans fall through.
Here's my 1970 318 Charger 500.
I've owned it since the late 80's, when it was a daily driver. In about 1993, it was involved in a head-on accident, thanks to a drunk driver.
Other than this pic of when we moved into our new house a few years ago, it's been my garage queen since 1993.
http://dodge-charger.com/Charger/attachments/MyChargerSmall.jpg
I've also got a 1966 F100 Custom Cab truck that I've owned since I was 16, that will be next in line for restoring.
Sorry, I don't have a good pic of it right now.

CF,
'js' is right. I've been building custom cars since I was a lad. I've wanted to build something a little different for years. (What car guy hasn't?) I approached Chrysler/Dodge, got their OK and bought a new Viper GTS power train. My wife looked at the semi-completed project and declared "Double Venom". A mix of a Cobra and a Viper! I've been 'DV' ever since. ;)

He's owned it for around 20-25 years, but it hasn't run for 18 years.
Still debating whether to try to fix the straight 6, or to just forget about it and go with a small 8. The question is, restoration, or hot rod?
Well the mustang is my brother's. All original, 68K or so miles.
When this picture was taken it was my Dad's car. Dad is a pretty nice guy ;)
We took this pic the day I bought my car (not new, but not old yet).
We have had some great pre-70's mustangs in our family over the years.
Makes me want one.

haha true true.
but i have wanted a wagon for a lot longer than they have been popular.
i used to own a 1963 Ford Fairlane Squire wagon.
that thing rocked.
and everyone would make fun of me for driving it.
and about 5 years after i got rid of it, wagons became the new hot rod.

That thing sounds plain cool! It probably gets sideways a lot, huh?
Double Venom
02-14-2005, 08:02 PM
CF,
In pure stock form, with MT/ET tires it runs 11.01 at 128.++ mph. in the 1/4 with a 1.5 60' time.
Want to go sideways instead? Not a problem :)
First picture: I wish the Camera-gal would have been a 1/2 second later!
The second picture is our latest model dubbed 'DV II'. A very highly modified ACR Viper engine, complete tilt front end, built for all out racing. Quick change rear, independent 'tune-able' suspension, Baer/Wildwood racing brakes, full internal cage, etc., etc. Familiar with Putnam track? Clocked at over 158 in there moderately long straight...on it's break in period no less!
DV...yes, like so many of you, I do like to build custom toys ;)
Ok, that's it...when I grow up I wanna be just like you!

Brian
Here’s the scoop on the Z.
Unfortunately that is the only photo I have of the car. All others I had were lost (longer story).
I bought a running Z, it was actually a 260 that I was going to put a big block into. I had an old Hot Rod mag with an article about one built for the street but back halving the rear with a tube frame but original front. Anyway I paid $500 for the car and drove it home. I yanked the running gear out and sold it for $500. Once I got the car to the shop (my boss let me use the fab shop nights and weekends so I could use the forklift) I took a torch to the back floorboards. After a small but eventful fire I decided to gut the interior and go pro-street. I sold off the interior for a few bucks as well.
I ran into a guy that had a 240 Z drag car with a 454, Lenco and Narrowed 9”. He had an aftermarket glass front end that was very heavy and he wanted to go lighter. He and I split the cost and had a mold built using his front as a form, we cut his front and stretched it before making the mold. The front end cost me about $500 and was a 240 Z front so I started calling mine a 240 since I went with the smaller 240 bumpers. This is when I decided to take the torch and drop everything from the car and go full race. All that was remaining was the outer shell. No floor, frame or firewall and I sold the front clip as one piece. This was the point of no return. I had only built one drag car before and it was a streetable 67 Firebird with all original parts.
I set up a jig and made up a frame. I bought the biggest M/T tires and Centerline wheels I could fit under the rear and then bought a Ford 9” rear from a junk yard and had a local race car fabricator (my new buddy) narrow it to keep the wheels under the body. Ordered a spool and re-splined the axles to 33 spline. The front end was built using a Pinto rack and Dodge Colt spindles, struts and brakes. The struts had to be shortened. No small feat but my new buddy had done it a few times. Chassis Eng. struts and spindle parts are expensive.
I hand fabricated a 4 link with a wishbone and wheelie bars. Never done anything like this before. Big learning curve. Bought some parts from Chassis Engineering and asked a lot of questions and checked out cars at the local strip for ideas. I even made my own adjustable frame and shock brackets by looking at the chassis engineering catalog and scaling the photos.
I bought a fuel cell, seat, brake controls, steering hub and things like that from Chassis and fabricated all mounts.
I had my new buddy bend me some tubing and I started fabricating the roll cage. The car started taking shape and I now had a rolling chassis. That’s when I took that picture, when I first rolled it out of my garage.
While in Texas working I came across a junk yard with trucks everywhere, I bought 2 running, truck block 454’s for $750 and brought them home. I sold one for $650 here since they’re not common in this area. The Engine got aluminum mounting plates I made by copying photos again. It got a simple rebuild and a used Powerglide to start. The interior got the aluminum treatment. I bought a header kit which is just a bunch of bent tubing and a buddy at the local muffler shop welded some headers for me. It was still a little rough looking but it attracted a lot of attention with that stretched front and snorkel scope.
I eventually lost interest in the project and life got in the way so I sold the car to a local racer. He painted the car a beautiful red with an aluminum wing on the back.
He finally got it running low 6’s and wanted to break into the 5’s. He gave the engine a full race treatment and installed a race trans with trans brake. He had the frame checked for straightness. Even after all that hand fabrication the chassis was off less than ½”. He changed all the glass to lexan as well.
He ran the car a few more years and got into the mid 5’s and then decided to get a rail. I lost track of it and last I heard it was prowling the strips in Tennessee.
Some guys from there saw my car when it was under construction and wanted to buy my front end and when I said no they bought the mold from the other Z racer guy. I was a little PO’d about that as I had hoped to build another one some day. I think they ended up with the Z.
All in all it was a fun project. For building a race car I actually broke even when I sold it which is unheard of. I doubt I’ll ever build another since I’ve lost interest in drag racing and I’m more into classics and cruising now.
What did I learn building it?

It has a 6 in it yes. 1988 911 3.2, it's pretty quick. I'm not sure the size on the Fuchs, although you are probably right. And correct on the GT flares.
It also has 911 Turbo front suspension and brakes, Bilsteins all around, 23 MM master cylinder, Sparco Race seats, 930S steering wheel, some carbon fiber stuff.
Sorry for the delayed response.

Here's an "oldie but goodie" of one of the most expensive
cars (TO BUILD) in the history of automotive manufacturing.
The white car behind the yellow Vette in the picture is our
1987 Cadillac Allante.
CADILLAC’S ALLANTE VENTURE STARTED A FLOW OF RED
INK TOTALING OVER $2.4 BILLION BETWEEN 1987 AND 1993!
ONLY 21,432 ALLANTES WERE PRODUCED DURING THE
PROJECT’S 7 YEAR LIFESPAN.
THEREFORE, EACH ALLANTE COST GM OVER $1,200,00 TO
DESIGN, BUILD AND SELL! (not including the cost of the
heads that rolled when the facts of this financial fisaco
were finally uncovered). They rarely sold for their $55-60 K
MSRP and never came close to knocking the Mercedes 2 seat
sports coupe out of it's market leader position!

Seriously - you get anywhere near Plymouth - let me know. I am sure we could arrange show and tell. I'd LOVE to see that car of yours.
Oh - it isn't really old, but speaking of the big engine/little car theme, this is the wife's toy:

When asked about the Miata, I always tell people - my wife picked the car and I picked the motor. ;)
The V8 into a Miata is actually a pretty common swap. Check out www.v8miata.com, or the Engine Conversion forum at www.miata.net.

Very nice cars! LOVE the '39. That car looks amazing. What're the details/stats on that? And the big question is - I see a two car garage in the background - how do you fit all of these toys in there??? :)

The 39 is a Coast to Coast body with late model Corvette suspension. Sports a 350 CID and 700r4 4 speed auto.
I own a small business that has a small warehouse and I store three cars there.

The second is my 54 Plymouth. Its shaved, dechromed and decked, 4" blocks in the rear, cut coils in the front(they were like that when I got it) and a FATLUCKY
custom interior with a few other thing done.

It isnt a car but I wouldnt hesitate to jump in and go anywhere, wouldnt even have to check the oil. Under the skin its all been re-worked, fresh eng, clutch, brks, lines, shocks, upper shock mounts repaired, bumper, springs, u-joints, new rad, re-cover seat. EVERYTHING works including interior lights. 300-6, 3 spd. People want to buy it but I wont sell,,, it would be worth about 3G to me. Could use a floor board patch in one spot but it doesnt effect its operation. Cab mounts are great yet. I have a blue one similar but V-8, auto trans, overloads, its all doctored up too. It really flies. One of my men was making a delivery and someone thought they would pass him up to get in line ahead of him at the place,,, no deal,,, ha

Man there are some georgeous and high caliber cars posted here!!
I've been lurking for a while and learned some really good tips on my next project (the garage).
Here is my harem:
1st (6 year project and now torn down again). I built my 1973 240Z with a 1994 LT1/T56 from a Z28 and a bunch of custom bodywork. Some more pics here (http://tim240z.iwarp.com/index.html)
I since sold the drivetrain and am building a 357ci twin turbo (TO4s) and 9" rear.
http://home.earthlink.net/~firemandch/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/goose_cropped_sm.jpg
My 1971 Cheyenne 20: Just did a drivetrain swap from a 99 Suburban (L31 5.7 Vortec, 4L60E), and painted her in my driveway:

http://home.earthlink.net/~firemandch/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/seats_done.jpg
http://home.earthlink.net/~firemandch/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/dash.jpg
And here is my 73 Opel GT, fresh from the bodyshop and full of buffing compound (still debating which engine to put in her--thinking KA-24 from a 240sx):

Opel GT...what an amazing little car. My wife and I drag raced ours in the early 70's. Remember the days of M-stock T-stock, et. al? Well, we had ours running just one second from the national leader with all stock parts! A whopping 17 seconds!
Here's a note for the Opel GT fans...did you know Buicks aluminum V-6 is a direct bolt in? Gobs of power out of that V-6 was readily available. Smokey Yunichej. (sp?) made hundreds of HP out of that V-6! May he rest in peace.
Just thought you might like to know.

Hey, the original poster said Let's see your OLD cars...
1912 KisselKar 4-50 Fire Chief's Car. 373 in3 four banger, 4-speed overdrive transmission, 37" tires on 27" rims, 60 mph flat out, happy at 50 mph. 11-12 mpg. All original running gear with full mechanical restoration and hand-crafted reproduction body (original body was tossed when the car was tractorized pre-WW2).
It was an eight year project, and the car has been licensed and driving since it was just a running chassis. I've put on 10,000 miles since 1997, and the rear tires are pretty much done.

Well - it doesn't have a V8, it's not American Iron, it's not worth a whole lot but it will carry the front wheels for about 8 feet - with a Solec carb, sleeper style.
Here is a restoration project of mine from about 4 years ago. It had been hit from every direction, painted five times (that I could tell) and had rust holes you could pass a basketball through from the wheelwells to the interior. I will never understand my motivation, but body work on a Bug is definately not an easy thing to get right.

I thought you all might enjoy these. In particular, check out the last 3 pics on this page. This guy belongs to a forum I am a member of. His handle is 'StreetKing' and I think you will realize why. Those pics in the last 3 are his "RED Cars"...amazing

Below are the links to my cars.
Here is the album of pictures of my 1964 Riviera. (http://www.minnessota.com/view_album.asp?Album_ID=318&CatLevel=2&Cat1_ID=1&Cat2_ID=&Cat3_ID=&Cat4_ID=&FromSearch=True&SearchPage=%2Fdefault%2Easp%3FCatLevel%3D2%26Cat1% 5FID%3D1)
31k Miles and all original. I inherited it when my Dad died as no one else in my family is into cars. He bought it from his Aunt when her health was starting to fail and knew that I liked the car as a kid.
Album of 1995 Impala SS pictures (http://www.minnessota.com/view_album.asp?Album_ID=26&CatLevel=2&Cat1_ID=1&Cat2_ID=&Cat3_ID=&Cat4_ID=&FromSearch=True&SearchPage=%2Fdefault%2Easp%3FCatLevel%3D2%26Cat1% 5FID%3D1)
This is my baby. I have swapped in a six speed manual, added Tri-y headers, Wilwood front brakes, 4.10 gears, stiff springs, monster sway bars, and a few other things for open tracking. I love running with the Vettes, Camaros, and Mustangs at the track. They can't believe a big 4 door can run with them. :spit:
It also has 175k miles on it with out ever having a valve cover off, or any work done to the engine.
That is the only 'cool' stuff I have right now.

Very cool! How hard was the swap and did it change the handling characteristics at all? I've been toying with the idea of doing an LS1 swap into a 3rd gen RX7 for a while now.

I didn't find it particularly hard to do, but I have a lot of experience with this sort of thing. The handling is absolutely neutral after adding heavier springs to the front. The car was originally (approximately) 51/49, now it's 52/48. It's an absolute blast on all fronts. If you'd like to see detailed pictures of the swap, I have a message board/gallery devoted to these swaps at:

Lets see your old cars , Well three of the four are my old cars and the 1970 on the end is the car I have owned since 1979. The others were great cars but the 70 was the cleanest and the with the 454 it was definately the fastest.
It had gotten to the point were the cars were owning me instead of me owning the cars and being a class A type knuckle head , I sold all but the 70 :wtf:
Anyhow that is spilt milk now, Oh BTW I was able to fit three cars in the two car garage in this picture, the El had to sit outside... The 67 vette I bought when I was 19yrs old and lived to sell it for a small profit

Here's my first post, showing off our '71 Z-28/RS that we've had since 1999. Nearly everything has been rebuilt or replaced. The motor is now .040 over with 10.5 to 1 comp, XE286 hyd. cam, Torker II with a Holley 700DP, Hooker headers, Flowmaster American Thunder Exhaust, Muncie M-21, 12 bolt diff. w/4.10 gears. The most recent mod was the steel cowl hood, Cragars, Goodyear Eagle GT IIs, and new paint last summer.

Mopars body shells are painted 100% body color....firewall, innerfenders, underside floor, trunk, etc...
To the best of my knowledge, GMs are typicaly painted semigloss black firewall and inner fenders, along with the underside, regardless to color.
Is there a pinch weld you can bring the color down to? Otherwise, take all the way down to were the vertical of firewall meets the horizontal of the floorpan? Just a suggestion.

'67 Corvette: I finished a complete body-off restoration in 2003, Top-Flighted in 2004, now I drive it and enjoy it; photo at a track day at Waterford Hills last summer.
'69 Camaro Z/28: All-original unrestored/unmolested highly-optioned car, GM-documented (sold new in Canada), purchased from the original owner six years ago, just turned over 34,000 miles last summer. May be the only one left that hasn't been tubbed and slammed with a blown big-block sticking through the hood

I bought it back in 96 sold it in 2000 when I found out I was going over seas and then bought it back in 2004 for the same price I sold it. It's been apart from 97-2000 I POR-15'ed the frame, freshened up the motor and that was it.
Then after I bought it back I had it painted, now I'm waiting till I can get back to the states to go thru the whole thing again. Interior & suspension are the first to be redone.

I need to ask, do you find these cars out in fields or hidden in woods? Reason I ask is I came across someone junkyard from the 70s hidden in some woods behind a burned down house. I am gonna guess the owner probably died and the house just sat till it burned. I'm thinking in the future I might want some of these cars.

Here's the deal on the GT40. It's a Superformance replica built in their South Africa factory. I've wanted to own a GT40 since high school, but a real one will always be beyond my means. I've always admired the Superformance Cobra replicas, and when Superformance announced they were building an accurate GT40 replica I went right over and put down a deposit. They still have not released a customer car, but those who have seen the prototypes rave about their accuracy and build quality. I'm taking serious s@#t from the purists in some of the car clubs I belong to, though. I'd be interested in other opinions. I still have time to cancel and get my deposit back. You can see more here:

Some impressive toys!
Throw my junk up here even though its not all that impressive. Hopefully one day it will be.
This is my 1970 LeMans Sport Convertible. Been garaged its whole life. I'm second owner. My Mothers Ex special ordered it and took delivery Dec 69. It just has over 200k on in. Its been parked for 8 years after loosing oil pressure. Its fairly rust free. Has the typical Quarter size GM rust blisters over the rear wheels from water getting in around the top. A little rust in the very bottom of the rear quarters. Floors are solid.
My Moms Ex is a anal retentive accountant. When he sold me the car he handed me a 1.5 inch thick folder that included the dealer copy of the window sticker, original owners manual in the dealer pouch with the Protecto plate. The order form and the complete specs sheet that details every option and specification available for the 70 model year. Also included is notes on everything that has ever been done to the car with Miles, Price and repair noted.
He lived in NY when he bought it but move to GA a year later. He wanted a V8 so it has a 350 2bbl. He was too cheap (his words) to sport for the Automatic. Hated Column shift enough to order a floor **** option. That sort of pushed him to order it in sport trim that got it buckets, center console, and Hurst shifter. He didn't want to shift much and again cheap so it got a Saginaw 3 speed. The Sport package got it the "Deluxe" wheel covers (hanging on the wall). He also sported for the convince light package that got under hood, truck and rear seat dome lights and rear speaker. No A/C because he lived in the north. He did order it with Pontiac Safety Track (Posi).
I put the 15 inch RALLY II's on it and its fist set of radials shortly after I bought it. It was still running Bias ply tires till 92. Factory rims are under the work bench.
The engine and transmission will be pulled in the next 30 days and go into hibernation under the bench. I have a 68 400 HO out of a GTO thats about to find its way under the hood. The motor is punched .040 over with a set of 6X heads, Edlebrock intake and a Demon 750. I also have a Saginaw 4 Speed out of a 69 Camaro going in.
Future plans are a set of Aluminum heads, 18 inch Nitrous II's with a set of 245 55 18 BFG KDWS's I'm very torn on paint. When I bought it I didn't realize it was sort of rare because of the way it was ordered. So the numbers matching stuff is being stored so it can be returned to original if I want. The Granada Gold paint isn't my favorite but I am afraid to paint it any other color. So I am leaning towards the Gold sides and black paint on hood and deck lid in a FOOSE style 2 tone. That will make it easy to put back stock without having to jam it.
The Burb doesn't fit in the garage and neither does the 59 Airstream. They sit in front of it though. The Airstream is in the middle of a frame off resto back to original appearance (the electrical and systems will be all new....we plan to use it often). The Suburban is a 88 R20 454. It just rolled 86,000 original miles. Its Prim mover for camper and trailers.
The Vespa is actual a 64 Sears Alstate.. Little toy to play with. I also have a mid 60's Puch Condor moped stashed over at my moms.

Here's my '64 Valiant - a very long-term project. 19 years and counting. I've been driving it most of that time, and have been working on a shoestring. It was the last car my grandfather bought, and I think he'd like it still being on the road.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y79/slantvaliant/DSC05801.jpg
It now has paint (white - boring, but forgiving.) and the grill is back in.
225 Slant Six, Pushbutton-shift 904 transmission, GM HEI, Mopar 10.87" disk brakes with fresh suspension bushings and 15" rims (Plus two!) up front, KYB shocks ... Work in progress!

I humbly submit my toy. Finally have the interior in and it's just about ready to fire up again. Be nice to hear the engine again. Been in the resto process now for over 2 years. This site has been great with ideas for the new garage...hope to get it started this season.

Not mine, its my dads. He did say when I was a young man, "you can have it when you settle down, and gets your own house." Well I got that, now he wants to sell it. :dunno: I couldn't afford it anyhow. Been collecting dust since '65.
55 Corvette, V8, 3 speed stick. The engine in it now is a 327 from 63 chevy. The rear end has been changed out also.
The bike is a 59 BSA Goldstar, Been sittin almost as long.
Enjoy.
Whoops, Pics were too big
Hold on.

Heres a page with a bunch of pics of my dad and my project truck. It's a 1953 chevy 1/2 ton

http://www.king-nerd.com/dood/images/truck/53chev/before/IMAG0005.JPG
He's owned it for around 20-25 years, but it hasn't run for 18 years.
Still debating whether to try to fix the straight 6, or to just forget about it and go with a small 8. The question is, restoration, or hot rod?
That truck is definitely streetrod material. That's the truck G.M. based their SSR pickup on. It has great lines once it's lowered and rodded.

I know, this one didn't have a "V" moulding...so I was guessing a '53 from the fender moulding.

Its a 55, The V molding is missing, but is was there at one time. We know its an original stick shift cause it has hooks on the firewall for the windshield washer fluid bag. We thought that made it very rare, but now he thinks that may be not so. Any one have a theory?

I'll see if I can get pics of my wife's aunts 68 Mustang fastback with a 428 CobraJet. Her brother bought it brand new and I'll probably get it to do a restore since it's been sitting outside for at least 10 years. They also told me that their were only 50 of them made, primarily for winter nationals, but I have yet to confirm this.
