My old college roommate was in town for a construction job but the guys who delivered cement were on strike up here, so he decided to install some of the Hyloft racking that is available at my local Costco (cost is about $35 each, they measure 42" x 42", holds up to 250 pounds, and can be adjusted from 24" to 36" deep) when he was sent home early one day from work. We had talked about using lumber (he is a carpenter/framer/all around handy guy) but once we saw the racking he thought it was going to be much cheaper than anything he could use.

I just moved into a new place and its a single wide two deep garage so we wanted to get everything off the floor.

The stuff sells for about $50-70 online and for my money these are pretty damn cool. They made them so you can install them by yourself (you install the brackets into the studs, then isntall the straight parts of the "U" than the bottom of the "U" and finally the racking (the last two steps can be done from the ground).

He did 5 of these and was able to move a crap load of stuff of the floor. I'm probably going to do at least 4 more.

One of the biggest downsides is that they have a little give so you can make it move, swing (which makes you wonder about the 250 pound rating). I grabbed the bottom of one that had about 100 pounds worth of stuff and hung onto it (180 pounds here) and it didn't seem to have any issues.

The only bummer is the lighting situation. You want to have lights that hang down, but that would get in the way of putting stuff up (and if you put the lights up on the ceiling, you have all your stuff blocking it).

I give it a 4 stars up at this point. Very well worth the price.

Thanks. Might have to invest in some of that for my new house.
