Im looking for a good hook and pick set. I think a mini-set for now. I have used the orange astro-pneumatics and I can understand why they are only like 5$ a set. The tips actually pull out of the handles.
The Matco/Witte ones are nice, I use these as well, 5pc set for 37$ (a little more than I wanted to spend), but I was wondering what you guys thought of other ones out there. Ive got access to both Matco and Snap On trucks, plus anything else sold online. Whatcha guys think?
Thanks
Jim
Are you talking this type?

I have the regular Craftsman set that is similar to the set in Dink's first link. They work well and are pretty inexpensive.

I like pretty much everything Witte makes for Matco. The torx- & screw-driver tips are nearly indestructible.
I wouldn't be afraid to buy those, although I find the plastic handles on the snappy ones stay clean easier than the grit- containing triangular handle Witte uses.

Thanks for the info guys. TNT, I agree. I use alot of the witte stuff and its awesome. Do you know, off hand, how much the snap ons are? As for dirt im not really worried. If they get bad Ill hit'em with a mr. clean eraser. I use those things for everything, I mean DAMN... they really do work well hahaha.
Dink, Ed, and Chevy, How big are those? Right now im looking for a mini set. Ill eventually buy a full size set of them as well but I find the mini ones to be very usefull. I saw the long thin ones craftsman and all the other manufacturer's sell and they seem to be more of a pain. I didnt notice the ones you guys are talking about though. Any more info on size?
I know KD has a set that is like 3 large and 4 small but I have an irking feeling they are made in taiwan like alot of other KD stuff is begining too, plus none of the websites I saw them on came out and said made in USA.
Thanks

The Snap on 4 piece plastic handled set is $26. The soft grip are $34.20.

Dude, go to www.snap-on.com and type in 'pick'. It's not that hard. :p
This is the sub-category you're looking for... ;)

I agree with you; get the miniature set first. They're more useful than the large ones overall. You'll wonder how you did about a million different tasks without them.

Jim, i was referring to the ful size picks. I actually have the mini ones from Cman (made in USA) and they work great. I do not know how much $$$$ because they were a gift. Still, for less than $30 you can get them from SO and they come right to you. Might consider that.
Mini sets? why not just buy some dental picks? You can clean your teeth and use them on the car or go-kart in your situation
Any resolutions here on which picks and hooks are the best bang for the buck?

What do you think of the Mayhew Mini Picks Set?

I ended up getting the matco 5 piece set. I think it was like 30 or 35$, but they are great. They dont bend or flex at all, and the little screwdriver that comes with the set is great for disconnecting little clips and things on cars. I have been pretty impressed with them and havent broken any, either at home or at work.
Astro pneumatic makes sets for like 7$, but they break easily. More of a disposably item, where as I believe you can warranty the matco ones...

What do you think of the Mayhew Mini Picks Set?
I never turn my nose up at Mayhew products, if you see a set of theirs that looks good go for it. Remember to get the mini set first though!

Holy old thread revival!
Anyways, it might be worthwhile to pick up a Cman set and then upgrade if they see a lot of use. I've used the black thin handled Cman set and they're actually pretty decent. The rounded hook is pretty damn strong. Previously I had picks that I could bend with my fingers. The Cman mini hooks shredded a nice centimeter long tear into the meat of one of my fingers. Damn sharp, damn rigid steel.
Yes that KD set at Amazon offers more bang for the buck, but the Mayhew set looks a bit better designed. Grippy handles are nicer than hard plastic.

I can try the Mayhew Mini Dominator series to see what this has to offer. At a little over $13 w/ free shipping it looks attractive to me. If they're ok then maybe I'll also go with their bigger Dominator series if not Craftsman pros.

The KD set also looks ok but I can't tell from the picture what the sizes exactly are and if the hooks are strong enough. I don't think these will be US made considering the price.

I have the regular craftsman set which is made in USA and $9.99 or less when on sale. I also have a Harbor Freight two sided set withe the pink anodized aluminum handle. I bought these for things like scraping rust out of grooves and such since I didn't want to ruin the C-man set. Beleive it or not I didn't ruin the HF set either. The tips are strong and have not worn out or gotten dull yet. For $2.99 or something they are well worth it.

Same set I use here. Cannot complain at all... good value.

Stay away from cheap imported double sided picks! The metal flexes and bends way too easily!

I have these snap-on ones and love them: http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=all&item_ID=72507&group_ID=13338&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog
i had the black handled craftsman ones, but they broke too often. These are much better, I've only had two replaced in the last few years.

I got a set of soft-grip Snap-on mini hooks and picks, barely used. I've only ever used the hook. If you want them, shoot me a PM. I got an orange hard-handle mini set, and black hard-handle big set.
You're welcome to the soft-grips if you want them, they're red and will clean up good.

I have had mine for 11 years now and for 4-5 of those years used them for WORK. Now they are just used occasionally. LOVE THEM.

I have a set of snapon long miniture picks. They are good and strong, but it has been hard for me to get them replaced. In order to replace them, my SO guy has to special order the broken one in the correct color and replace the whole thing. And last one took a month. The short picks, they replace the picks itself on the truck.
