Pretty wild stuff. It is still mind boggling to me how much power these things have. Not sure if it is true, but I have heard the modern day nukes are MUCH more powerful than these. :eek:

And the scary part is, these guys thought it was safe to watch them from a distance. It's been reported that the spectators of aboveground nuclear tests almost all developed cancer later in life.

You may be making an incorrect assumption. Medical research data has to come from somewhere. How do you get volunteers to hang out near a nuclear blast?

Soldiers do not have to volunteer, they are ordered.

I could be wrong, but I remember watching a show on nuclear testing where the people setting them off assumed there was no effect, and actually set up observation areas where people could come and watch the mushroom cloud. That is, until they found out what really happens. But again, I could be wrong... that show was a few years ago.
