Now I am more interested in the 10" Because well its cheaper

But there is the choice of the 12" for twice the money usually around 169.00 to 189.00

Exactly why would I want to go with the 12" If I would only use the drill press every so often

Educate me please

The 12 inch means you can drill in the center of a 12 inch workpiece... aprox 6 inches from bit to the front of the colum. The 10 inch gives you 5 inches. The 12 inche model will allow you to drill into a larger workpiece. Its not much of a difference, Id consider speeds/motor amps if deciding between the two. One may have a stronger motor, or slower speeds. For metal, slower speeds are important.

If somebody doesnt chime in later Ill edit this with more info later tonight

Here is a link to Popular Mechanic’s view on inexpensive drill presses,, most likely all imported. An interesting model to consider is a “radial” design. Some of them the head can be extended enough to clear 16” from the center of the spindle to the column.

A good choice would be to purchase a good used American made drill press. Evildky found a fantastic buy on a floor model Walker Turney for $75.00 http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5340&highlight=drill+press

The used American Iron is indeed the way to go, I recently purchased a 60's-70's vintage Rockwell floor model for $150.00. There are still good buys for home shop guys who are patient enough to wait for the great deals. A floor model Walker Turner for $75.00! Outright theft!:shocking:

I am not going floor models....i have a large 2 car garage...but I am not sacrificing space for a floor type drill press that isnt going to be used very often....I also really dont have room in the future to build a shop for something like that either......I will only go with table top drill presses
