why the pawn store want to???

i was stop by the pawn store that near my college class after i finish class. i was looking around the pawn store to see if any other tools come in. i found the snap on 18V impact wrench (1/2dr) it is price as 349.99 and it is old model. then i saw soft ratcheting screwdriver with bits set for 49.99 but when i open inside of box and most china bits and only snap on ratcheting screwdriver and extenion adapter. so 49.99 is overrule for it. so i dont buy any thing at pawn store today. then i asked employee for if any more tools in back of store. they just brought box of craftsman hand tool like sockets and wrenches. i did asked for other brand but they said no as that it.....

also i found ALLEN wrenches (both open end set as 1/4 to 1 1/8 set) for 39.99. it is danaher made in usa. then i found the "popular mechanic" metric wrenches set as 6mm to 19mm (6mm is missing) the price tag is 45.99 for it and it is made in tawain. why overprice for that kind tools????

i remember that one guy brought snap on chest and bottom box as it is 26in wides and it have three drawers missing but there have good snap on tools inside but not many tools there but guy took 200 dollars for it and left. i looked inside and found that some of tools are worth a lot of money if sell at tool truck than 200 dollars for all tools and snap on combo toolboxes. the snap on toolbox are very rough and it have rusted and all drawers are very rough to open.
i was plan to ask employee to see if they plan sell the tools but employee already push it in back of store so i cant ask because they would said which...... :wtf:

also i found the same MG31 impact wrench (3/8dr) it is little abused but it still price for 99.99 dollars since 2 months. i was thinking about go back there to try make a deal with it.... i will not pay 99.99 dollars for it. i will pay 50 dollars or 60 dollars but not above 80.00 dollars. :dunno:

also i was noticed that pawn store trying to sell mac tool collective long reach pliers (2 or 3 pliers that are gold and white handle as it is 99.99 and it sit there since almost 3 months. i dont want buy any tool to collective because it will not make me a living from that. i use my tools for living not let it sit and show for living.... :headscrat

Most pawn shops here are overpriced. I don't know what they are thinking trying to sell stuff for as much or more than it costs new. One shop has had the same cordless tool set on display for 7 or 8 years. I'm sure the batteries are in great shape, lol.

There is one shop I like, as they sell for reasonable prices. They don't have a lot of tools for sale at any given time, as they go quickly. I commented to the owner about the price difference between his shop and the others. He said it's because he is in business to make a living, and things that sit around cost money.

Makes sense to me.

Being a semi-employed student, I have time to go to a lot of pawn shops around Atlanta.

I've found the same thing as Will, that there are shops with lots of stuff with high prices that just sits on the shelf week after week, and there are shops with rock-bottom prices that are constantly moving merchandise.

Two of my 'regular' shops (ones I'm in about once a week) are good examples of both types:

In one, I've bought a Cornwell 3/8 drive and Mac 1/2 drive ratchets for $1 each. Mac 3/8 drive extensions (3 6 and 10") for .50 each. Mac long pattern wrenches (5 of them) for $1 each. Every time I stop by, almost their entire inventory has turned over.

In the other, everything is marked 60 to 70% of list price. The owner is always there, and it is nearly impossible to get a 'smokin' deal like I get at the other place. On the other hand, because they sell so little, they always have a lot in stock. This is the shop I use for filling out sets, or for specialty tools. They are more expensive than the other shop, but still generally cheaper than ebay.

I have recently bought two top chests - a Snap On that I bought at the first shop just because it was dirt cheap, and the Cornwell I bought at the second shop because it was a decent deal and what I really wanted.

Offer them 30% of what they are asking on ALL tools. You'll be surprised how often they'll say okay. If not, they'll probably come down hard off the price. Pawn shops are there to negotiate. You BOTH know the person that pawned it got VERY little for it.

And, if they don't, it didn't hurt to ask. Mark them off the list and go find someone that understands that $40 today on something they gave $10 for is better then $0 never.

I believe he stated a reason in an older thread about why his grammar isn't up to par. I know a lot of people just have poor grammar, but either way, it isn't polite to post what may come across as an insult. If it was an honest suggestion from the heart, a simple PM would have worked.

First Brad54, do you type in Braille? Do you know how to sign? Sign language doesn't have all the rules and regulations of English, and doesn't always transfer easily.
Second Deaf, as for the box they wheeled back. You would need to find out your local laws. There are regulations in my state, that anything brought in, is to be documented, and run through a system (serial numbers etc, for stolen property). Then they have so many days to redeem the pawn ticket, so the shop CAN'T sell it to you.
As for the high part, the ones I have seen are more often then not HIGH. This is for several reasons.
1. They get stuck footing the bills due to a bunch of stolen merchandise.
2. The think they can get that for it.
3. They have held onto stuff for so long, they need the high end sales, to make the rent.
4. They are a business, and like to make money on the loans. They think that having high prices, will discourage those people who pawn something, then come back to buy it, AFTER the pawn ticket has expired.

I was in a shop the other day and wanted some Matco wrenches. I asked them what they could do on the price and the owner said that was it - they sell for 50% of retail. So I said thank you and I walked. The advantage that I have is that I don't NEED the tools and that I hold the money. Shopping at pawn shops is like waiting for lightning to strike - but a lot of times its worth the wait. Besides, for lot of us, the fun is in the hunt. :beer:

I did already took writing and reading courses in last year and it is diffcult for me to transfer the sign language to english grammar because i am deaf for since i am 9 months old and most teachers always helping me a lot but they said to me that it is very hard to make my grammar change in 16 weeks (semster) they said it will take longer than what they would expect... so i am not only person who have bad grammars as there are people who have problems with grammars...

also i got few pm about my problems with grammars. i am understand that people try help me....

I always see the same thing @ the 1 pawn shop that I know has the best selection of tools. They want 50-60% of the retail price for Snap-on and Mac stuff.

I was in there the other day and was looking through the "loose" tool bins - with all the misc Craftsman stuff and Import stuff. I saw a box full of Heli-Coil packages. I picked out the most common sizes that I use (1/4-20, 5/16-18, 3/8-16, 7/16-13) There were the sets with the Taps and installation tools and then there were refil pacakages. They were marked $8each - which is pretty decent to begin with. I took all 8 of them to the counter and said "what can you do for me if I buy all of them". $2ea - so 4 Heli-Coil Sets and 4 Refils for $16 :thumbup:

You can't even buy 1 Heli set for that.

So you just have to go in every now and then and look for some deals.

It depends on the terms of the loan agreement when or if the items will be available for sale. Around here the common term is 45 days.

If the person bringing the item in doesn't redeem it within the term, the item can be sold. There are also arrangements where the person can come in and pay the interest on the item, and extend the term of the loan. I know a guy who has had some guns on pawn for years.

I was also told at a pawn shop that they cannot resell any used measuring device (like a torque wrench) unless it has a recent, valid certificate of calibration. They said it was a requirement of the Bureau of Weights and Measures. I called Weights and Measures, and they said they had never heard of any such requirement.

I don't think Brad meant any harm. He just made a stupid mistake that most others might make not knowing Deafautotech's situation.

You can overcome any issues with your grammar - it just takes time. My wife is a speech therapist and has a lot of experience in this field.

Picking on the Deaf Guy, What a way to get owned.

Pawn Shops in my area take payments so they set a high price and take payments on the item. Lots of people will pay the price cause they cant get a loan and no one will give them a CC.

Sorry man--I didn't realize you were deaf. However, I'm not going to patronize you for being deaf either. I'm not going to sit here thinking "Oh, the poor deaf kid..." I doubt you would want a stranger's pity or sympathy.

I would have thought reading and writing is more of a visual learning process rather than a spoken language teaching process. Reading books, study guides, etc. in my mind is translated visually. But I'm no expert. I'd be interested to find out...honestly, never having ever thought of it before, I don't know how the mind absorbs the learning of reading and writing, any more than I understand how the mind processes and learns sign language. It does seem to me that your teachers let you down by getting you this far without being able to write. That's not your fault.

When you wrote you were a college student, my first thought was "how did this kid get this far in school without being able to write?" because as a former magazine editor, I was constantly amazed at the poor writing skills I encountered daily--including from one of my staffers. I've always thought being able to write and express yourself clearly is very important. For a college student, your writing seemed like an extreme example.

I'm glad you're working on it--when you send out resume's to seek jobs, the guy reading it probably won't realize you're deaf either. It is important. And since you're working on it, you know that. And since you know it, you'll work on it hard and improve. By the time you get out of college, you'll have it beat.

The line I wrote about taking the writing class was probably a mean shot. Sorry.
The line about college being the best 6 or 7 years of life wasn't mean. Dang, it took me 7 years and 2 semesters to get my 4-year degree!

no offend to me but I am little disappointment about person that tell me about bad grammars. i am here to talking about tools and what i doing for my living in Chrysler, jeep, lincoln, and mercury dealership where i am still employee there as automotive technician. i am also member of craftsman forum and most of members at the craftsman forum are understand. it is same with this forum as most of people understand but they are here for help other people like what kind tools that would help or good idea to make job go easy than dont have right tool....

the reason why i got passed the english and reading because i use the tutor center to help me to improve and make sure there is no error as grammars or sentence that need change subject before i give to my college teachers. my teachers said i can use tutor center to make homework go to be good grammar or make papers are in right way as example to make the story go on right path not go off the point.

well the reason why i make my nickname is deafautotech as i put the word of deaf with autotech so show people that i am deaf.

Brad, Life is tough for everyone, tougher for some. Look at his screen name, think real hard, grammer, style and sentence structure and all that good stuff we all are supposed to know, is very tough for someone who cannot hear, and while his writing can be improved upon, I would suspect that only specialized classes would be of any benefit, and I'll bet those are not readily available to Deafautotech.

Cut him some slack, understand the situation, and put yourself in his shoes.
