Old Script vs New Script

I'm referring to sockets and wrenches mostly. As most of you know I have bought 95% of my Snap On stuff off eBay and there are new script stuff mixed in with ould script things Does this pose a problem to you guys out there? It doesn't bother me a bit but I'm just asking

From a asthetics standpoint its nice to have wrenches; etc that are all marked the same. I know as they changed the script/style they also changed the way some of the sockets, etc were marked size wise. This would be my real issue.. it might take you a second to "hunt" for the right size however I'm sure thats not a big deal.

I guess you gotta think of it like this.. if you had a set of older sockets and then broke one and had it warrantied.. its probably not gonna match the old stuff. I've run into that on some SK stuff. I've got an older set of SK 3/8 sockets and I broke a 10mm. They exchanged it but the newer stuff looks way different. The newer socket is actually even a little "taller" than the old ones. Oh well..

It doesn't bother me. I have a few newer-style Snap-On wrenches mixed in with the old due to them being warrantied, etc.

I know some people like to be a able to look at a box full of gleaming, perfectly matched tools, but I didn't buy mine to look at them.

It ain't Snap-On, but it's the same issue.

I've got a ton of engraved/stamped Craftsman sockets, and as I buy newer stuff, it's all laser-etched.

From a purely aesthetics standpoint, I'd like everything to be one way.

From a functionality standpoint, it's a non-issue.

On my old flare nut line wrenchs, the older style isn´t as clearly marked (lying under the car, trying to read it). HOWEVER, they also don´t make the sizes that they once used to. They used to make them up to 1¨ , now they only go to 3/4¨. My largest is a 7/8¨ wrench, used for o2 sensors, when the pipes have to be dropped.

I prefer the old script to the new, but that is just because I also am old. I like my tools and cars to reflect my age... :bounce:

Personally, things like that bother the heck out of me. I hate when things aren't uniform. But, the tools work the same, so it's not really THAT big of a deal. But still, tools not matching bothers me.

One tech I worked with had a wrench out of his set warrantied due to wear. The replacement was the newer style, and it bugged him so much that he pissed and moaned to the Snap-On for months until the dealer agreed to replace the entire set just to shut him up.

The drama was so thick, it could have been a soap opera.

This was the same dealer that refused to exchange one of my wrenches on a completely legitimate claim. Go figure.

Anyway, I'm not into "tool vanity". They are meant to be used, and a lifetime warranty is an added benefit. If a replacement looks different due to design changes or upgrades, so be it.

i have lot of craftsman wrenches and it is for wrenches not for look... but i use it a lot as abuse so hard and it is still work good as i am only use box end not open end wrenches.
also i had few high perforamce snap on zero offset metric and it work for me as handy. i bought it from ebay as cheap than buy from tool truck....

My tools are for looks. I keep them in vacuum sealed bags to keep them clean. I wouldn't dare use them. That could mar the finish.

I don't know what's worse. The guy wanting his whole set warrantied, or the dealer actually giving in.

If I were in the situation, I'd sell the older wrenches and purchase a new set. I may be into, as you call it, "tool vanity." But I'm not into screwing over dealers because of my own problems.

If you are into collecting, that's fine...and not much chance you would need to replace anything with a newer version due to wear or abuse.

In the case I mentioned, I assume the dealer felt it was worth it to keep the customer. He probably sold the used set to someone else for what the replacements cost him. The rest of us were relieved because we didn't have to listen to the tech complain every day about one wrench that didn't match the others.

some of tech in my work ask me why i want orange handles on snap on screwdrivers and prybar. i told them i like orange color and easy know that is mine. i told my snap on guy that i want buy screwdriver but with orange handle so he just pop out the black handle to install orange handle on it. that it is my biggest prybar (36in) as on one in my work have biggest prybar....

i dont complain with tool truck because it always warranty on tool which i break or damaged. i dont care how different look on tools. i need tools to work for me. also i bought some used tools that techs trade in or exchanged in snap on tool truck.

I've got several socket sets with different brand sockets in them. That doesn't bother me at all. I don't like the new lazer etched sockets though.

I was wondering, if you return normal/standard sockets to Sears, Matoc, etc for warranty replacement, are you stuck getting the laser etched ones? :)

To me as long it is the brand I like I don't care if the wrench is a year old or 20 years old

Yes thats what you get. Better stock up on acid-free archival plastic tool bags for your vacuum sealer If you want to keep yours all the same. I got the Tool preservation kit for my Mighty-vac. It kicks ass compared to using a seal-a-meal. :)

I feel a little sorry for you. The 15-20 year old vehicles that my wife an I are driving never seem to have anything go wrong to fix. Ditto for my 130 year old house so I don't get much use out of my tools. Oh yeah, except for keeping them dust free. The bags really help a lot for that.:bounce:

Heres how to get rid of those freeloaders:

1- spill 3-4 ounces of motor oil on the exhaust manifold.
2- retard ignition timing 6 degrees
3- hammer wheel lugs with 400 ft. lb. impact gun until brake rotors are warped.

Leave plenty of greasy fingerprints on the door, dash and wheel for good measure. When questioned about any of these things tell them that "they all do that".

when i got fixed the friends or customer that was recommend me to fix their vehicle was show up on sunday night to pay me and take vehicle to home...i cant have more than 4 cars at my parent's garage because indiana sheriff live as neighborhood and sometime they just watch us to make sure i dont do something wrong because i work different vehicle almost every weekend.... no deal but just make sure i didn't do wrong thing...

sometime i would fix for free if it is very simple like oil change but the one rule is they buy parts......

sometime my brother's gilfriend 's friend was happy with my repair so paid me money and gave my brother and his girlfriend a gift card..... that interest

Not meant to be an offense at all to anyone here, but, most of the oldtime mechanics and machinists that my dad and in second hand fashion, I, learned from had the most mixed up, mish mash of tools and storage you could imagine. Some had tools scattered all over the shop. Sixteen different brands to comprise a 3/8" socket set. You get the picture. They all knew what they were doing when it came to wrenching though. By the way I am pretty anal about my tools as well.

but for my family friends as they prefer pay me for labors while they buy parts what i said that they need buy.... if i said to my friend that it need new spark plugs, wires, cap, and rotor then they have choice to buy which they want (cheapest to lot of money). i dont care what kind of brand because it is their choice but i did recommended them to go advance auto parts unless if they have daimlerchrysler or ford vehicles then i can get mopar parts or motorcrafts parts for discount prices.

Must be Ameican cars, you can't put cheap parts on a Japanese car and expect it to run correctly. I put autolite plugs and power path plug wires on a Honda and it kept getting check engine lights for random cylinder misfire. Friend of mine told me to put OEM parts on it to solve the issue. I thought he was kidding, but tried it anyhow. NGK Plugs and wires the car never had another check engine light ... 3 years and running.

i did tune up the hond accord for my deaf friend, i told him that he need ngk and better quality wires and oem cap and rotor. he did bought it and i installed it. it run better than last year as he said he got it for free but he said it is run so rough and misfire.... but after my repair, it is run like it should be run smooth and strong not weak and rough...

i never install the junk part or cheap part as it will wear out next week.....

but most of my side jobs are GM, Ford, and dodge (damilerchrysler) so i know what best quality parts as motorcrafts, mopar parts, and acdelco (for GM)
