Cheapest? Some people have had decent luck with the cheapie Silver and Demming bits from Harbor Freight. If you plan on using them in metal, go slow and use cutting oil. :thumbup:

I just bought a set from them about a month ago. I was surprised at how well they worked. Deffinately go slow and use oil. Also start with a smaller size and bump up no more than 2 bit sizes at a time until you get to the size you want.

You can also buy them individually from Enco.

I have bought some low-end bits from them and they are essentially the same as the HF ones, but they do have better quality available if you are going to use them a lot

I never buy any cutting tools or anything abrasive from HF, that is definetly a place where I draw the line!! NEVER EVER! Enco, MSC, Travers etc... :pimpflash

Hey, do you have a lathe? I live in NE Ohio and have several large straight shank bits I need turned down. Willing to trade some large bits for turning down the shanks. I have about 20 bits with multiples of many sizes.

sorry no lathe. and I should've been more clear but by "cheap" i meant best price on quality items, and im thinking that it might be best to use mt2 tapered bits since my drill press has a tapered spindle and with holes so big it could easily spin a regular bit if the chuck loosens at all.

I'm usually with you on this one but I needed the bits that day and the price for the complete set was less than one bit from Sears. I figured it was worth 20 bucks to give them a try.

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by how well they worked. Just as good as any other bit I've used as long as you treat them properly. As for longevity, I have no idea. I drilled the six holes through the 3/8 steel plate that needed to be done that day and have not needed the large bits since. I'm sure they will not hold up like the better USA made bits but for small jobs they worked just fine.

I too would never buy abrasives like cutting discs etc. from HF. If a drill bit breaks you just move on. If a cut off wheel comes apart very bad things could happen.

Just my 2 cents.
