Just got my order from Channellock. Got a pair of slip joint pliers (not as nice as FACOM - pre Stanley, that is), a 10" nut buster and a Spanish-sourced 10" adjustable wrench.

The adjustable wrench is easily the nicest one I have (that includes Snap On) as far as looks and feel. It is most likely made by Irega, but for $22, I am really impressed with it.

Oh, and the markings on the jaws seem to be pretty accurate, too! :bounce:

Those jaws ARE accurate!
I got a new catalog in the mail the other day. I have some Channel Lock stuff, but really been considering their adjustable wrench. Thanks for sharing the info!!!

I remember when you said you ordered these the other day. You got them directly from Channel Lock didn't you? Seems like they have fast service. They sent me a catalog last week. I was interested in those slip joint pliers myself. They look like they would be a good addition to a box to carry in the truck.
Nice toy's!

An accurate adjustable wrench. How novel.

it is important to have accurate tools so it will not damage the bolts or nuts AND tools.....

Exactly what I was thinking ... who cares if it is accurate, it's adjustable. :bounce:

Does it "lock" at certain intervals? Not actually lock, but "set"... kinda like a craftsman flex head ratchet... it has a detent system on it so it wants to stay in certain positions
right?

No, it doesn't. But the adjusting motion is about the smoothest I've ever seen. All this from a $22 wrench...

I bet that whoever makes that adjustable wrench, make 'em for Snap-On. Someone said their adjustable Snappy was made in Spain... How many freakin' adjustable wrench manufacturers do you think Spain has? ;)
For what it's worth, my Snappy FADH12 has "made in sweden" on it... but the font and size, coloring, and quality of those size graduations is an EXACT match.
That said, BMW, I hope you got the "flank drive plus" snappy adjustable wrench, because it will easily outperform this style. I use mine for alignments on vehicles I don't work on every day. Used it to do the front of a Chrysler town & country van today... The teeth bite so well that you have to smack the handle until it works loose so you can pull it off. :D
That said... $22 for that wrench is really tempting. Thanks for the heads up: One will probably find it's way into my toolbox eventually. :)

Probably BAHCO, a Snap-On owned Swedish based company. The original designer and patent holder of the adjustable wrench.

Yea, I have the flank drive plus model... all 4 of them. I haven't used them yet, but I can't wait.... :)

does the flank drive REALLY make a difference on an adjustable?
TNToy
02-13-2007, 11:35 PM
Absolutely! (I was surprised, too)...
I haven't decided if the flank drive plus (teeth cut into open end wrench) makes a big difference - KingP obviously thinks it does...
But on the adjustable, they just cut teeth into the jaws:
http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/objects_lg/51900/51859.JPG
I didn't really think they'd matter much (think robo-grip type jaws. They always slipped)... but the teeth bite into the corners and leave clear marks in the fastener. Where every other adjustable WANTS to slip and round-off, and you end up repeatedly tightening the adjuster screw, you just slap it on there and PULL.
Works so well that, like I said, after you haul on the handle to tighten something, you have to smack the handle a couple of times in the opposite direction and wiggle it until the teeth come free. Otherwise it won't come off. :D

I've never seem a Matco plier that wasn't a rebadged Channellock or Knipex. There probably are a few, but for the most part... ;)
At least they pick good companies to make their stuff for 'em.
