So I'm got a little bored to day and started comparing the prices between the two countries (USA and UK) and came to the conclussion that if I buy new from the UK I'm getting robbed big time (I'm in Europe)
Good thing most come from eBay
Here are a few examples
Flank drive plus metric wrenches SOEXM710 (10mm-19mm)
USA price= $294.00
UK price= £292.58 (after changing currency) = $574.02
3/8" drive shallow metric sockets 212FSMY (8mm-19mm)
USA price $126.06
UK price £107.16 (after changing currency) = $210.24
5/8" spark plug socket S9706KA
USA price $26.50
UK price £22.38 (after currency change) = $43.90
We are talking about a 90% increase, I'll never buy anything new again from Snap On UK

That's a BIG difference; guess shipping to UK must be expensive ... :(

This is why sometimes you see snap on stuff go for above list on ebay
Sometimes you see it with lie nielsen planes too

Man, if I were in Europe, I would just take advantage of some of the great brands that are over there (FACOM, Stahlwille, Beta, etc). The cost has to be more realistic and the service and support are probably better, too.
I gotta believe that Snap On's service and support is one of the reasons that they can charge a premium over here (the Snappy guy stops less than a mile from my house). If you aren't getting that, or if it's not conveniently available, then why the hell waste time with it? Snap On is not the only company that makes a decent set of tools. If it were, then people wouldn't waste their money on Matco, MAC, and other expensive premium brands.
That's just the way I see it. But at the end of the day, you need to buy what makes you happy.

Have you (or anybody else) actually used more than one or two pieces from these brands?

I don't about most of those brands but Facom does not rival SnapOn.

Last week I bought a Beta 24" breaker bar and the salesman gave me a little discount which when I convert the currency to US funds comes out to $90 The same size breaker bar from Snap On is $92

hahahahahahahaha, you people on this board make me laugh. Facom is SK tools; ask BMW how much he appreciates SK's quality. As for the rest, well, the argument of Craftsman vs. Snap On comes to mind. I'm not going to say they are BAD tools, I just don't know, but the simple fact that Facom is listed in there with them I wonder.

Facom is SK tools. You are being fooled by marketing. Do you remember the Cavalier/Cimarron?

No, sir, it is not. FACOM at one point owned SK tools. SK tools had some FACOM pieces in its line up, but SK did not manufacture FACOM tools. Unfortuately, FACOM is now owned by Stanley, but still seems to be operating on its own.
I could say the same for you; you seem to be fooled by Snap On's marketing...
This whole "Snap On is the best and no other tools really matter" attitude is getting old. There is no evidence (besides anecdotal) to back this up. If it were true, then there would be a lot of other tool companies - just as expensive - out of business.
If FACOM tools were that bad, then the Ferrari F1 team would have been using Snap On tools for all those years.
Sheesh.

It's very apparent that you know very very little about sponsorships and the inner workings of professional motorsports.
Being an "Italian" company had little to do with Ferrari's F1 team choosing Beta. Just as in any other form of motorsports, this decision was driven by sponsorship money provided by Beta. They would use Harbor Freight, Craftsman or Kobalt tools if the "right" money was there.
Brand loyalty means nothing in motorsports. It's all about cubic dollars.

So I take it you know exactly how Scuderia Ferrari F1 think on a daily basis? I would like to know your source that Scuderia Ferrari F1 only went with Italian manufacturer BETA because of the money?
-lecroix-

Because they are a race team and it all comes down to basic economics.
Beta got their decal on the car and tools in the toolboxes because they PAID for them to be there, plain and simple.
If anyone else had offer to pay MORE, then their decals & tools would be there. Just so happens that Beta is an Italian company, I say it's more of a coincidence than a marketing ploy.
For what it's worth, I have been heavily involved in PROFESSIONAL motorsports for the last 15 or so years on the SPONSORSHIP/MARKETING side, not the driver side. The Ferrari team is no different than any other pro race team, they just have more money to do their thing and a prestigious name to back it up with.
P.S. I do have some "inside info" on Ferrari's F1 team, but would sound like I am bragging if I reveal my sources. Let's just say I have a very close personal friend who owns the Ferrari F1 car that John Surtees won his world championship in back in the early sixties, along with several other famous Ferrari, Porsche and Lotus race cars from other eras.
Yes Dink, those cars are here in Alabama.

You know what else is getting old? Your constant bickering over nothing.
I will say that Snap On isn't the best, but I will say Facom isn't on their level from what I have used. Facom and Craftsman are about on the same level, and for the price Facom is charging, that is disturbing.
As far as Snap On marketing, I was once just like you. I made fun of the other guys in the shop that used snap on while I was happily using Craftsman, getting them replaced at the mall while I was out. I was enjoying life not having a tool bill. That is until I started borrowing Snap On tools from the other techs and things started coming apart easier. I was drilling and helicoiling less, had fewer busted knuckles, and could get to things easier and at more acute angles then before.
You see the difference between you and me is I wrenched on vehicles 12-18 hours a day. I have used many of the tool companies, ALL of the truck companies, and I have PERSONALLY seen, felt, and compared the differences. The thing I enjoyed most about the trucks is I could try a tool out for a week, and if it didn’t' make me money or work well it went back on the truck no charge to me. So VERY often I had a MAC, and a Snap On tool, or a Cornwell, or Matco etc ... to compare back to back. THOES are the reasons I continue to go back to Snap On. For some reason you simply like to buck the system and be different. If you can find me a better tool, for less money, do you really think I'm not going to buy it? Unlike some, I'm not made of money, and I have bought my fair share of used tools. Not everything I own is Snap On if I can get away with a less expensive tool I will. And Snap On isn't the best at everything, but I'll be damned if I can find a better tool for less money 90% of the time. So, school me, and save my money for me. Find me better cheaper tools.

i did bought a lot of used snap on in my snap on guy's tool truck. he sold me much cheap than new snap on tool. even i bought used snap on toolboxes from him and i already paid off (krl1001 and 15 year old snap on chest as 53wX30DX22h) for less than 4,500 dollars than buy new bottom box for almost 7,000 dollar. the other techs still paying every weeks as they bought new bottom box.

And for YOU, that makes sense. Spend your money the way you like. Do your thing. But, again, you offer anecdotal evidence. Nothing concrete here.
Not all of us wrench on cars all day. I would go so far as to say that the majority of us are not professional techs, but rather serious hobby guys. For the majority of us, this is NOT bickering over nothing, we just want the most bang for the buck. And until there is concrete, valid, reliable and repeatable evidence that Snap On is better, there will be discussion. If you don't have anything to add, please don't add anything. Telling us that our discussions make you laugh is really just annoying and doesn't add anything constructive to the thread:
"hahahahahahahaha, you people on this board make me laugh."
See, that's just uncalled for.
This whole thread has made me feel smarter

Don't sweat it eschoendorff ... no matter what type of message board you go to on the 'Net, you will always have a few "Great Pretenders." They always seem to resort to name calling and juvenile antics when faced with questions or points that they can not counter with proof or fact.
