Garage update pics part 3

These are actually last weeks pics. By the end of today, all of the shingles should be on the roof.

Just curious, why the additional 2x4's on the underside of the trusses?

Some sort of huricane strengthening device that is now code with the town. Doesn't look it would do to much if Andrew blew through :eek7:

Over here we use a different technique called hurricane straps. They're metal straps that mount where the truss meets the wall. Supposed to keep the roof from ripping off the wall.

It seems they could have placed them above the bottom truss board and then lagged them into the wall top caps, but that would have been a little more work.....

In order to get lengths of 2x4 that long on top of the lower support, you'd have to slide them in BEFORE the gable wall was put up...a lot more work. I had to do something similar for diagonal support on my trusses. The long 2x4 had to be put in before the roof was on.

A plus will be the fact that you have more bite for the screws when putting up the sheetrock...always nice.

I was going to say that they were the fastening strips for the drywall too.

They look like they would help a hurricane to take the roof off.....since a hurricane wind makes your roof act like an airplane wing...producing upward lift...keeping the entire truss system tied together would just make a bigger wing, instead of letting a section of it tear away...it will now take the whole thing.

BUT.....Im sure there are some engineers that know alot more than me about it!!

Funny... Connecticut hasn't had a major hurricane since, what, the 1950s? Meanwhile, we don't require that in coastal SC, and we about got levelled in '89, caught two tropical storms/borderline Cat 1s last year...

Ah well. Looks like it'll be a great space!

it sure looks big...too bad someone like the designer or architect didn't mention the use of attic trusses, you could have had an incredible storage or office loft up in your attic.
