I've got one of these........................................
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=7340
Just cleaned it out today for the first time in a couple of years.....NASTY!!
I need to replace the filter that's mounted in front of the motor. My question is, what do you guys use as a filter??? I was thinking one of those grey, fine Scotchbrite pads. I just need to keep some of the gunk out of the motor. Any ideas???

I hear the best way to keep the crap out of the pump is to fill 4 or so inches with water then fill the rest with varsol ect it will float on top of the water. you need to leave the pump above the water line for this to work as all the debris will sink to the bottom and leave you're solvent free of all the crap and the pump won't pick it up because it is above you're water/filter line

I sure hope that is how it works lol I am pretty sure I read it on here and I know a couple old timer's have told me the same thing too
edit It wont work to well with a water soluable solvent/cleaner  I know alot of people have switched over around here from varsol to some sort of "earth friendly" solvent's

I have a water based solution in my parts washer and about the only thing it will remove is the paint from the bottom side of the washer lid. The stuff is a freaking joke.
Mineral spirits will be going back in next fill up.

Where do you guys take old fluid from your parts washers? I know that around here it is getting more difficult to recycle antifreeze, much less parts washer solvents...

Our county solid waste management district holds a toxic waste cleanup day once or twice a year where residents of member towns can get rid of all of their nasty stuff for free at our local transfer station (formerly known as the dump). In addition to that there are a few "super sites" in the county open every Saturday morning where residents can pay a small $1-$5 fee to properly dispose of automotive and household chemicals.
All of the shops I have worked in had contracts with companies to service the parts washer and change the fluid on a regular basis.

It turns out I just washed and reused the old filter media. On a side note, I went to pick up 5 gals of mineral spirits today. When I bought some a couple of years ago, I was appalled at the $30 price tag! I guess I got off easy. That same 5 gals now cost $60!!:shocking:
eschoendorff - just call your local garbage company and ask them where to recycle the solvent. They should have the answer.

ok ... looks like kerosene or diesel fuel will go back in at fill up time. :bounce:
