Tom, did you biuld or buy the rotisserie? I have thought about making one for my car but having found and plans I like.

I based mine off of this plan.

However, I modified it at the base so that I could put larger tires on it for ease of rolling and keep the center of gravity lower.

Here is a pic of mine with out the car brackets on the rotary arms.

Good job on the build. Looks great. Thank you for the plans, now I just have to find the time to build one.

Curious about the rotisseries you guys use...

How are they as far as stability? I have often wondered how much "oomph" it takes to roll a body around.

Do you design the car brackets so that the CG is relatively neutral?

Mine is quite stable. I never have any question about wether the car is secure or not.

I can rotate my car with one hand.

I used large tubes where the upright and horz bar meet. I also greased it well before I put it together. I use a stop pin to prevent roation.

As far as CG. That is the whole point of the car bracket/arm attachment. It allows you to drop the body in relation to the piviot point so that you have the car neutrally balanced around the pivot point and it takes little effor to rotate the car.

I have my pivot point about 4.5 feet off the ground. It allows me to rotate the car about 300 degrees. The windshield A pillar hits the lower bar so I cant spin it totally upside down, however, I have not found a reason to do so. I prefer to have it a bit lower, if I raised it up on the main vertical supports I could spin it totally around, but have not had a need.

first off, thanks for doing a Corvair...they are really neat...a pic of mine is attached.
The Rotisserie was a fun fabrication. we had no plans, just ideas. We used an extension on our engine hoist to get the body off the car. There is a good shot of the back mount..a little over done but the car was on the rotisserie for about 2 years. It was very stable....our only problem was the amount of weight we added finishing the floor ( double thickness...no floor pans available). It ended up taking 2 of us to roll it over.
If you are thinking of building one, the cost was around $350.00...well worth the price. Not once did we have to weld over our head.

Was the $350 figure based on buying brand new metal? Im am lucky, we have a steel yard that has over an acre of just scrap steel. Sometimes it will be a brand new 20ft piece with a smashed and or something. If i remember right scrap goes for 40 cents a pound.

Yes, the $350 was for new metal....4X4 thickwall square tubing, 2x2 thickwall square tubing and some 2"solid bar stock....it really turned out much easier than we thought.
In this thread, there is mention of how to do the center of gravity correctly. That was our biggest mistake. As we neared the end of the car on the rotisserie, we had to add weight plates on a shaft to counterwieght the car to be able to roll it over. Go back and read the posts in the beginning of this thread..it will be worth your time.
Good Luck
