Here are some photos of a 1930 Pontiac that we fabricated the entire inner structure on. This thing had a wood floor and inner structure. That wouldnt hold up too well to 500 horses so we ripped out the wood and fabricated the entire inner structure. The roof used to be cloth but it was replaced with a roof from a 1998 Chevy extended cab pickup. Cadi trunk latch, door solinoids, hidden hinges, BMW Z3 8 way power seats, A/C...There are so many things we have done to this thing it would take a novel to explain it. It's almost ready for paint....thank God!!!!!!! It seems like this thing has been here for ever. It's going Very Velvet witch is a black cherry. Brand new color from Planet Color. In low light it is black. Give it some sun light and whamo...bright red. Cool, cool, cool. Should be painted next week. Then we have to put the thing together. Fun little project.

The fenders, running boards and jambs are supposed to be painted by next week. We have a lot of collision work in the shop right now so it is hard to get time to finish this thing. The plan is next week for the aforementioned items though. I will take photos as soon as we get more done.

Man I can barely remember back to when our car looked like that!!!! Looks you have some work ahead of you.
We jambed the doors and painted the dash this weekend. Fenders and running boards are being prepped right now. Getting closer!! The owner took the dash home today before I got pics. He was just taking it to show his wife so it should be back soon. I will post more pics soon.

I've been reluctant to add any more photos since the car really does'nt look a whole lot different than it does in the prior photos. My painter has been blocking the whole thing with 400 grit so it now just looks light grey instead of marbleized. The body has been re-seam sealed after the primer was blocked so it is now ready for paint. I would imagine that by the end of this week we should have a good portion of it painted. The color looks pretty cool on the dash and the door jambs. Can't wait to see it on a larger panel with some curves.

OK so here are the fenders through the process of being refinished. The 1st photos are of the ground coat in gold. Next we have the mid coat and finally the clear coated product. These are being baked in the booth right now and will be wet sanded down on Monday and polished to a glass finish.

I just watched Rides, about Fooses latest Ridler winner. I'd never fully appreciated the massive amount of work and car that has to go into a car to even enter that competition, let alone get into the top eight. But to win it, almost unreal, hard to believe anybody could work to the standards required to produce perfection.

The fenders, running boards and jambs are painted. The paint shop is working on the main body of the car right now. It should be painted by next wednesday. The fenders and running boards are installed on the frame before the body is attached. That process, along with running fuel lines and wire pulling, is being completed right now so I will post more progress photos tomorrow.

I have a 32 chevy street rod. An Experi-metal steel repo body on a precision engineering frame with a small block 350. We have been running it in primer for the last two years and enjoying every minute of it. How many hours are involved in paiting the car: chassis and body including filling and grinding welds etc. Thank you jon crane rochester mich

I would say that we are at about 150 hours right now not including the fabrication work. I lost count on the time for the fabrication!!!! :shocking: My partner and father-in-law Tom did all the fabrication and body work on this. He truely is a master with metal. My painter is VERY anal about having a flat panel. He spends a lot of time on these kind of projects. Prime, block sand and repeat. There is nothing worse than seeing a car that somebody has put a lot of work and $ into only to look down the side and see that washboard effect. Truely a shame. Prep cant be rushed.

No problem

It took awhile to pick that color. The Planet Color line has sooooo many cool colors it made the decision very difficult. There is one called Orange Crush that is bright orange with some really heavy metal flake that I was quite partial to. I'm so glad we picked Very Velvet though. It's one of the coolest colors I have seen so far.

Much as I admire your work, and love rods; I have an appreciation for fine restorations as well. I care for both, and think there is room for both. I will admit to being fuddy duddy enough to say what you did to that old Chevy is almost criminal. I do not understand ripping apart a good restored to do a rod; I just hate seeing it done. It is hard to believe there were not enough parts, or parts cars to do this project. Now that I am through bitchin, Your work looks great, and I will look forward to seeing the end result.

I hear you. We have done PLENTY of the original restorations down to the correct hammer marks on the carriage bolts. I totaly agree that there is room for both. I made a comment earlier about if it isnt fast...blah, blah, blah. I of course was just playing around. :bounce: I personally like the custom stuff more but some of the original stuff is pretty cool. To me it's just fun to think stuff up in your head and make it come to life out of metal. The photos of the old Pontiac look great but it by far wasn't perfect. You could have replaced all of the wood and so on and so on and made it a pretty cool restored car for probably about the same $ that he has into it now. To each his own. The owner of this one wanted a rod so a rod it is. I feel your pain but we just look at it a different way. If we are going to cut this thing up then it better be done right and look damn good when it's done. Then even if your not into the rod thing...it commands respect for the amount of craftsmanship and time that went into it.

Ok, so here are a few more pics. We have been absolutely swamped in the body shop so the Pontiac was put aside for a few days to allow for the other work to be painted. Our painter is polishing the car right now so I will take more after that is done. Hopefully outside so you can get the full effect of the paint.

Our work is almost done. It leaves for the alignment shop Monday and will be getting new wheels as soon as they arrive. After that it goes to the guy for the wiring and then upholstry. You can get a pretty good idea of what it is going to look like off these photos minus the wheels and upholstry.

OK so I havent been here for awhile and thought I would give an update on this one. We just got the car back from upholstery today. This one had a large delay due to wiring. It went to a guy the vehicle owner knew to have it wired and it got pretty boched up. We pulled ALL of the wiring out and re-did it ourselves. You want a job done right... We also got a little more in depth with a sound system install. During that process we fabricated an upper shelf and a center console. The center console has to be painted then we get to hook everything back up. That should take awhile. After that it gets its final polish and new wheels/tires installed. Done. We will probably have it till the end of this month. Here are some photos of the upholstery which was done at Dawn Chikes in Keizer OR.

Beautiful work. For those purists who think cutting up an old car to make a street rod is a bad thing...keep in mind that this was not a hugely rare or special car to begin with, and it is now. In stock form, it really was not safe (or fun) to drive around too much....it is now. And most important, in current form, if the owner wanted to drive it across the country, why not? You'd have been lucky to make it across town in the original, and a massochist to try to go much further than that.

Amen to that!!!! It's hard enough trying to cross the hi-way in front of our shop with a fast car. Trying to do it with a car with 20 horsepower would end badly :shocking:

My partner/father-in-law is the metal man extrordinair. He is quite talented. I have more of a grasp of the electrical/stereo end of it. There is some major amounts of wire flowing through this thing!!!! It was in the shop 4 years. 1 year of that was at the guys house that was supposed to be wiring it. It came back from him and we tore all the wiring back out and re-wired it ourselves. Not one thing was wired correctly. I am being literal. We really felt bad for the owner since he is a really cool guy. Done now though!!!

I think the vintage logo is great as is. It would be strange to flip a logo that has a history. If it were just a graphic image of some kind and not a logo it could of be interesting to flip.
