Typically the loudest part of the compressor is the intake. if you can vent that somewhere it is out of ear shot that's a good start. After that you could build a box of ply wood and insulate it with rigid or glass wool insulation.

We could use more info. 1 stage? 2 stage? What compressor is it. I had an old craftsman single stage screamer and when it died I bought a 2 stage pro model. What a difference!! At least 40 or 50 percent quieter. Eventually I will get a good one. For now this is sufficient. My neighbors aren't 4 feet away but we are close enough that I will try and keep it quiet also. Besides I don't want the noise inside the garage either. I would like to be able to hear the radio when I am working in there.

Foot pads under the feet of the unit ,
Flex line from the compressor to any hard lines ,
Air intake silencer ,

Box in the compressor in a small room that is sound insulated and / or
make sure the room it is in is insulated and doors and windows are closed to the outside .
