since the 4'oc is cheaper and the labor should be pretty close ether way, if later on down the road ya decide to finish the inside, it would be easier and cheaper with the 4' spacing.

If you attached a 2by horizontally between the post at the desired height to attach the French cleat to, the rigidity of the shelf/cabinets/etc. themselves would stop any buckling.
